Bug#691427: journal commit I/O error on brand-new Thinkpad T430s ext4 on lvm on SSD
Source: linux Version: 3.2.32-1 Severity: important Tags: upstream Hi dear linux maintainers, I have setup a Debian Wheezy on a brand new Lenovo Thinkpad T430s with a SSDSC2BW180A3L SSD drive. After the install, the user installed his usual softwares (solr, apache, nodejs, …) and started work. Under some load (importing thousands of records in MySQL via a hand-called PHP script), the system reliably stops working fine enough because of journal commit I/O error leading to a readonly filesystem. Then Gnome becomes (obviously) unuseable and the only way out is a hard-reboot. The disk looks fine (and is brand new), according to the BIOS disk report and SMART tests, so the usual suspiscion that it might be broken is improbable. We have reproduced this bug under 3.2.0-4 (3.2.23-1), 3.2.0-5 (3.2.32-1) and 3.5-trunk (3.5.5-1~experimental.1). The setup is an ext4 / (and /home) on LVM, on the mentionned SSD. What are the things we could do to help resolve this bug? Are there logs that you might want to get? Please advise! Cheers, OdyX, on behalf of Dorian Villet, owner of the (unuseable) T430s. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Mobile UXes - From the DebConf11 BoF to the stars
Hi all, This is the sumary of the discussion held at DebConf11 during the Mobile UXes BoF, on 2011-07-29, at 18h00 in the meeting room. (= tl;dr version =) (Search for Proposal down this mail.) (Please answer to debian-de...@lists.debian.org only. ) The point of this mail is to inform people and communities of the content of those discussions and propose a sort-of plan of action. Note that nothing has been clearly decided there but the discussion was really nice and promising so I sort-of hope the consensus acknowledged upon there can be reflected online. = Outline = 0 - Commented overview of the various available stacks 1 - Proposal for future actions and meet-together = 0 - Commented overview of the various available stacks = The initial idea to frame the discussion was to share experiences and opinions about known free software mobile stacks: are they packaged in Debian? What has been the experience so far? If not, why not? The main reference to build up this list has been http://wiki.debian.org/Smartphone, which is still a good reference! Now to the list. == Android == The Canonical effort [0] to port an Android execution environment is currently reported as a dead-end. The most free-software-friendly efforts reported are IcedRobot [1] and Replicant [2]. They don't seem ready enough for inclusion in Debian though but we should keep an eye on them. [0] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Specs/AndroidExecutionEnvironment [1] http://icedrobot.org [2] http://replicant.us/ == MeeGo == Back when the MeeGo project was launched, some hoped it could be Debian-based. Some persons from the Debian community tried to make that a reality back then but didn't succeed. Then the pkg-meego team [3] was formed to get software produced by the MeeGo project in Debian. This effort has faced a tough reality with regards to project management, interfaces stability, FHS respect, trademark policies, etc; and as a result it is currently stalled. Nowadays, various software pieces produced by or within the MeeGo project are probably interesting to get in Debian: - Maliit [4] it is the input methods solution used in MeeGo (in particular it's the project behind the Harmattan virtual keyboard / input method; also used for the N900/N950 Community Edition) - the Tablet User Experience [5] released by Intel earlier this year. - Handheld UX in the MeeGo CE form [6] As a side-note; the software released with the Nokia N9 (of which the swipe user interface [7] is not known to be available as free software) is available as a downloadable qemu image [8]. MeeGo CE [9] is a community effort both to make free MeeGo releases for a few smartphones, and to make MeeGo as a project more transparent by being an example of a contributing vendor. Since the project aims for a product level quality in the UIs, the packages they've put on top of MeeGo Core and integrate back to the Core are interesting for Debian as well. Timo Jyrinki wrote a very interesting blogpost on this topic [10]. [3] http://pkg-meego.alioth.debian.org/ [4] http://maliit.org [5] https://meego.com/downloads/releases/1.2/meego-tablet-developer-preview [6] https://build.pub.meego.com/project/packages?project=Project%3ADE%3ATrunk [7] http://www.developer.nokia.com/swipe/ux/ [8] http://harmattan-dev.nokia.com/ [9] http://wiki.meego.com/N900 [10] http://losca.blogspot.com/2011/08/meego-ce-and-freesmartphoneorg.html == Maemo == Maemo [11] is the Debian derivative that powers the Nokia N900 that was one branches of the MeeGo merge. Nowadays, both Maemo 6 and Harmattan (software basis of the Nokia N9) are reported to be dead-ends. A Debian team [12] was formed to work on the inclusion of the Maemo software back in Debian, but it decided earlier this year that Maemo is a dead end and removed Maemo related software from Debian [13]. It could still make sense to package some of the Maemo GTK themes to make running unmodified GTK applications easier on mobile devices. Openmoko also produced some. [11] http://maemo.org [12] http://wiki.debian.org/pkg-maemo [13] http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.debian.alioth.maemo.maint/1013 == GNOME Mobile Embedded Initiative == The GNOME Mobile Embedded Initiative was announced in 2007 for developing and promoting the use of the GNOME platform in mobile devices. It is not packaged in Debian (although the GNOME team might be able to give more insightful information) and doesn't seem to have a home on the Internet. It is part of the Hackable1 distribution (see below). == KDE Plasma Active == From their website: KDE Plasma Active [14] aims at creating a cross-device user experience for emerging devices such as tablet computers, media centers, smartphones, and more. It is currently not packaged in Debian, but some members of the pkg-qt-kde team could certainly be interested [15]. [14]
Re: Bug#634916: usb-modeswitch: seems to have no effect on Huawei E169
reassign 634916 src:linux-2.6 3.0.0-1 retitle 634916 Linux modeswitches some 3G dongles in kernelland (duplicates userland functionality) thanks Dear linux-2.6 maintainers, I'm hereby re-assigning the #634916 bug to the Linux kernel, as per the discussion held with Josua Dietze, the usb-modeswitch upstream developer. In summary: the Linux kernel modeswitches some 3G dongles where usb-modeswitch is supposed to be the userland tool doing this. Having this behaviour hardcoded in Linux implies less flexibility and duplicates a functionality already present in userland _today_. Bug#595661: Debian bug #595661: Alsa
forwarded 595661 alsa-de...@alsa-project.org found 595661 3.0.0-1 thanks Le vendredi, 29 juillet 2011 10.02:24, Jonathan Nieder a écrit : Interesting. If it still happens in version 3.0, could you report it to alsa-de...@alsa-project.org, cc-ing this bug log? Dear Alsa developers, As I reported in the Debian #595661 bug [0], I'm experiencing a weird behaviour of the snd-hda-intel driver on my Dell Latitude D630: When the headphone is plugged in, I can't reach all volume levels in it: when playing with the Master and Headphone sliders in alsamixer (all others at max), sounds _stops_ being outputted before reaching zero levels (and it's not a matter of me not hearing: the sound is still rather loud when it stops). What I see is that I only get sound when the sum of the levels of Master and Headphone is big enough: According to my experimental analysis, the minimum combined levels where I can hear sound are when the sum of the attenuations of Master and Headphone in dB are smaller than 48 dB (see the attached graph for details). Could this be a hardware limitation ? Cheers, -- OdyX [0] http://bugs.debian.org/595661 snd_hda_intel_weirdness.png
Bug#607669: linux-image-2.6.37-rc5-amd64: Dell Latitude D630 backlight fails to resume to on
Package: linux-2.6 Version: 2.6.37~rc5-1~experimental.3 Severity: normal Tags: experimental -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, when running the 3.6.37-rc5 kernel, I noticed that my screen fails to relight after being suspended by the desktop manager (inactivitiy timeout). I can reliably reproduce this (and recover) by following these steps: 1) boot, up to a running X 2) $ xset dpms force off 3) move mouse Now the screen is on, things work, but I cannot light the screen more than a bare minimum (using the Fn-{up,down} hardware keys), while I can before step 2. I can recover from this situation by suspending-to-ram and waking up again. This is also a regression from the Squeeze-Sid kernel (2.6.32-29), but I think it worked with 2.6.36. Bug#602444: firmware-brcm80211: Kernel Panic on iwlist scan
Package: firmware-brcm80211 Version: 0.27 Severity: critical Tags: patch Justification: breaks the whole system Hi, Booting the HP Mini 5103 with the firmware-brcm80211 package installed leads to a 100% reproducible Kernel Panic. (Squeeze's 2.6.32 and experimental 2.6.36-trunk are affected). From the http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/brcm80211 homepage, the fix is to load the module with maxcpus=1. So a simple patch would be to ship a /etc/modprobe.d/brcm80211.conf containing options brcm80211 maxcpus=1 I tested that here and it works. So, of course having said driver run on one CPU only is sub-optimal, but at least the Kernel Panic is avoided. This should make it in Squeeze IMHO. Bug#595661: linux-image-2.6.35-trunk-amd64: [Alsa] Initial offset in volume adjustment sliders (sound stops before 0)
Package: linux-2.6 Version: 2.6.35-1~experimental.2 Severity: normal Hi dear Kernel maintainers, I noticed that I get a very weird Alsa functionality: when I reduce the volume of various sliders under a certain level (which depends on the relative values of the sliders, the sounds stops completely (instead of continuing to reduce). I tried with and without pulseaudio installed and running, so it doesn't seem to take part of the game. The disturbing thing is that the levels are not particularilty low: e.g. sounds stops with master=36 (/100), Headphone=66 (/100) and PCM=100 (/100). Ah, this behaviour happens in the headphones only. Any idea ? Bug#464373: [linux-2.6] Not sufficient ?
Hi, I'm using uswsusp for supsending and I noticed the following : * When waking up with the wifi kill button on (to get WiFi working), the card is correctly powered on and the connection will work (modulo some other problems, ..) * When waking up with the wifi kill button off (after having been in places where no WiFi is accessible or useful), if I power the card afterwards, it won't power up and I have to ifdown/ifup to get the card working. I'm not using ifplugd or anything like this. My /etc/network/interfaces : auto wlan0 iface wlan0 inet manual pre-up ip link set wlan0 up wpa-driver wext wpa-roam/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_roaming.conf iface default inet dhcp Please ask for more info if needed... Bug#485789: initramfs-tools: With crypted LVM, tries to start LVM before decryption
Package: initramfs-tools Version: 0.92b Severity: normal Hi, I installed LennyBeta2 (under Qemu) with the graphical installer and chose crypted LVM. The thing is that on boot, the initramfs firstly tries to open (initiate ?) the LVM before it actually has access to it (because it is encrypted). It results in an error (attached) which could be avoided if the encrypted partition is opened before the LVM is initiated. It's almost the same as the in-kernel one, especially as far as the resume is concerned. The simplest explanation coming to mind is that the image is somehow damaged in the uswsusp case. You can use the uswsusp's checksumming to verify that, though. Thanks, Rafael Hi, I upgraded my uswsusp to 0.8 and my kernel to 2.6.25-rc8 from Debian. I activated the checksumming.
