I noticed that whenever I did an init 6 on my laptop, it would hang and
neither reboot nor shutdown. Initially I noticed this with linux 2.6.15.
To narrow the bug down to a specific kernel version, I spent my afternoon
compiling vanilla
Ok, I checked man diff and know I have a patch:

a more complete blacklisting is in commit 484cdf4c0, that made it into 4.0.5.
Apparently the other Samsung SSDs are affected, too.
I can confirm that this patch fixes the issues I'm having with my 840 Evo.

(mediated devices, needed to enable the lower settings)
CONFIG_VFIO_MDEV=m
CONFIG_VFIO_MDEV_DEVICE=m
(enable kvm/xen support for gvt)
