It seems that buster guests on the same host are unaffected, with
similar-looking command lines.

The host's CPUs are Intel Xeon Silver 4110. Our other x86-64 clusters
either use AMD CPUs (also with "-cpu host") or Xeon E5-2699 v3 CPUs,
with "-cpu Haswell-noTSX".

the specific version and any additional patches included is up to the

RFC: Clean-up of old kernel ABIs at point releases

2020-06-30 Thread Adam D. Barratt
[MFT and Reply-To set to debian-release, to try and avoid spamming too
many people with the discussion]

Hi,

When the kernel ABI version has been increased between two point
releases, we currently remove the old versions as part of the point
release, to avoid carrying cruft.

This has unfortunate side-effects for a number of use cases, including
CI setups which immediately stop working as the packages they attempt
to install no longer exist in the archive.

If we were instead to change this policy to, for example, remove the
packages after the subsequent point release instead, can anyone see any
problems that this might cause, whether for tooling, tools or anything
else?

Adam

However, as an additional data point, the kernel currently sat in NEW
and destined for stable has an ABI bump. If that's accepted, then I
assume things will "just work" in the meantime as the old binary
packages will hang around until they're decrufted, but it's worth
bearing in mind.

look at making the press side more handleable for that date.

The 7th is looking like the favourite so far (although would mean
freezing next weekend), but we still need an ftp-master (N)ACK on
either / both date.

We can either accept the packages and put up with the situation for a
short while, or do 9.5 before 8.11. In practical terms, that would
likely mean both 9.5 and 8.11 on June 23rd, freezing both next weekend.
How do people feel about that?

After discussions on IRC, it appears unlikely that the currently WIP
kernel update will be ready in sufficient time to be happy with it on
all architectures.

So the possible options are:

- go ahead with freezing 9.5 this weekend, and hope the kernel's ready
in time
- go ahead with freezing 9.5 this weekend, and update the kernel via
stable-updates later
- just do 8.11 this weekend, accept the version skew and get 9.5
released as soon as we can

To be entirely honest, I'm not that comfortable with announcing a freeze
this close to the actual date. In terms of packages with version skew,
we have:

- packages from the security archive, where users upgrading should
already have the jessie-security package installed in any case
- intel-microcode, src:patch and clamav, where it looks like the jessie
package should work on stretch without issues

- tzdata, which is already available from stretch-updates.

Given all of the above, I think the sanest option is to concentrate on
getting 8.11 done and jessie off our radar and then get 9.5 sorted.

For suggested dates for 9.5, we know that June 30th is a no-go, Debcamp
starts on July 21st and then Debconf on the 28th. So that leaves us
with:

- July 7th
- July 14th

Are people available for either or both of those dates?

Adam

Unless we can get a definite answer r.e. the kernel very quickly, we
might have to live with the version skew for a short while and arrange
alternate dates for 9.5, which would then be in July (as the 30th won't
work for either Sledge or I, at least), which would be well past our
2-month goal.

Because linux-perf-4.3 is still in testing.

Yet only on two architectures!

Yes, because...

It was smooth-updated. Not sure if that was expected, given the
package is in section devel and not (old)libs.

Actually, I'm not sure that it was. The excuses for the run during which
it migrated has:

old binaries left on href="http://buildd.debian.org/status/logs.php?arch=amd64=linux-tools=4.4-4;
target="_blank">amd64: liblockdep4.3, linux-kbuild-4.3,

target="_blank">4.3.1-2) (but ignoring cruft, so nevermind)

and so on. So the new version was migrated at the start of the run, and
then she tried to remove the cruft at the end (and is still trying, in
fact).

Does that mean there was manual intervention?  Or is that automatic
behaviour?  Does it ignore all->any dependencies on !x86?

It was all automatic. britney only requires that arch:all packages are
installable on i386 and amd64. At the end of the britney run during
which linux-tools migrated, the old binary packages from each of the
other architectures were removed as doing so did not create any new
uninstallability so far as britney was concerned.

 I've just uploaded now.

The upload has since had some wider exposure as a result of being used
as the basis for a security release. In the process, a few bugs have
been reported regarding regressions in networking - for instance,
#754173, #754197 and #754294.

If it weren't for the security fix, I'd be inclined to suggest that we
skip 3.2.60 at this point, to give us more time to address the
regressions; that may still not be the worst idea, as it at least allows
people to easily downgrade to the current stable kernel.

Thoughts welcome.

Thanks for the data point.

If it weren't for the security fix, I'd be inclined to suggest that we
skip 3.2.60 at this point, to give us more time to address the
regressions; that may still not be the worst idea, as it at least allows
people to easily downgrade to the current stable kernel.

  Thoughts welcome.

As there aren't any major changes to hardware support in this version,
there will be little benefit from rebuilding the installer using
3.2.60-1. So I'm OK with leaving wheezy as it is.

We already rebuilt the installer purely as a part of our process, but
I'd assumed that it would not be particularly affected by any of the
regressions.

I'm hoping to be able to fix the regressions (probably with a revert) in
another security update by the time of the point release.

That sounds good; thanks.

Adam

It would quite probably be easier to do stable first, despite the above.

We have a few packages in both p-u and o-p-u currently which are newer
upstream versions (mostly via security), such that p-u o-p-u stable
oldstable. If the oldstable point release occurs first, we either have
to not include those packages until 6.0.9 or temporarily have oldstable
stable, which is at best confusing. (We've been in the latter
situation previously, for 5.0.9 / 6.0.3, and after some debate on the

Given the timescales, if we are looking at a -49 in p-u to form part of
the point release, I think it needs to be uploaded (and accepted) today,
and the earlier the better. Depending on which buildd picks the package
up (which we can't control) both the armel and mipsel builds have

complete and when delays due to waiting for dinstall, an available
buildd, glitches in the matrix, etc. are taken in to account, we're

Possibly; an alternative would be to release a 48squeeze1 via security
to sync up w/ the fixes just before the point release. That would let
us go ahead and get the lkdi/d-i updates ready and give us some
flexibility to react to any follow-on changes that may appear this
 week as CVE-2013-0871 is discussed.

From the release perspective, I obviously have a bias toward wanting to
get a finalised kernel and lkdi / d-i sorted sooner rather than later,
both so we can get people to test the former and to reduce the
likelihood of last minute issues / upload chasing with the latter.

On the other hand, I know Ben has
another fix queued for stable, and I saw a mention of a possible
s390/KVM regression - so those may justify the extra p-u update.

Are these regressions from the current stable kernel?

These all work for me. I will be sort of offline, however, from

I think we've heard from everyone now, with there being a preference
for the 23rd from the CD perspective. That means we'd be looking at
closing p-u over the upcoming weekend, i.e. the 16 / 17th. That should
be doable, if a little tighter than I'd normally like, assuming we can
get the kernel upload done / accepted in time, to avoid last minute
panic over lkdi / d-i builds; CCing -kernel for opinions.

6.0.7 planning

2013-02-10 Thread Adam D. Barratt
Hi,

We're somewhat overdue with the next Squeeze point release (6.0.7) and
it'd be good to get it done before the wheezy release, so that we can
pull in some upgrade fixes. As an opening gambit, some proposed dates,
all of which appear to currently work for me:

February 23rd

March 2nd

March 9th

Regards,

Adam
