If a cdrom is inserted, things work for a short while. I can for instance read

files on the CD. But, invariably, it stops working and a number of error

I have tried another drive and get the same errors, so I don't think the 
problem is 
related to the drive itself. A harddisk is attached to the same controller, 
making 
a controller error a little less likely.

The problem has been around for a while. Less than a year, but certainly for 
several 
kernel versions.
