Just for the record: No, your version you sent me did not work However, there was a bug in the console-data package, which was fixed with version 2002.12.04dbs-41. So installing the new version, and then doing a "dpkg-reconfigure console-data" (and selecting the right options) fixed my ALT + F1 to F7 problem. So the last row of key in your keyboard (what ever is written on it) are: Ctrl AltGr Alt Space Alt AltGr Last_Console Ctrl on the console mode. Under X they are still what ever they were. Idea: Ask Big One In The Sky which xserver (ATI?) could be involved You did not tell us anything about your X11 setup, loaded framebuffer / video console modules, kernel config ( fb/videoconsole statically included?), X11 driver. If you want to do so, somebody could certainly help you out.
