a silly question but have you recompiled kernel or are you using the one
the Debian CD supplied you with? If you haven't then if you compile one
expect a three fold increase in speed :)

In case you reboot once in a while:
On my old Acer notebook I was told to go into the BIOS and let it sit
there until it gets switched off.
That operation usually lasts much longer than the battery warning
beeps/shutdowns you get when you're working normally.

But what about Battery Life. My Laptop sits in a terminal for
40 minutes before the power light starts to blink. But I was
running X and compiling Busybox and It died after 15 minutes.
Are there any OpenSource tools to completely drain the battery
Because it has been used as a Desktop for about 4 years and has
never been unplugged. I hope I don't have to buy a new battery.

Try removing the appropriate hardlinks in /etc/rc*.d/ which are used at
startup to start various daemons.

Yes, but that's not the best way :)

$ update-rc.d -f xdm remove

Or whatever you want to disable in place of xdm. If you need to find
name of the service to disable, go to /etc/init.d. They are all there.

Peter.

You can do 1 of two things here.
1. you can apt-get remove packagename
or
2. go to /etc/rc2.d and remove the symlink

debian boots to initlevel 2 by default
