Re: Help: Dell Inspiron 5000e X-Windows
Thanks for everybody. I finally set up the X-windows. I upgrade it to XFree86 4.0.x. But while installing, I found myself in a evil circularity due to dpkg doing interdependency, because I installed locale-zh. While the 3.3.x was removed and 4.0.x installed, the config file remains to be the older one and the new version could not get configured. I had to reinstall the whole system all over and tried not install other possibly conflicting packages at the first step. Maybe there is a better way to do that. If there is, please let me know.

Not that this is part of the debian policy actually, but it is custom to use runlevel 3 as the X runlevel, and 2 as the console runlevel. so the xdm link should only exist in the rc3.d directory as S99xdm whereas it should exist as K01xdm in the other 5 rc?.d directories. Now you can manipulate the line containing "initdefault" in /etc/inittab to control which runlevel to boot into, or use the init 3 command to switch to runlevel 3 on the fly (be careful with that if it's a multiuser system). if you are mildly confused by the /etc/rc?.d SystemV hierarchy mess, i recommend you try out the filerc package - it replaces the whole hierarchy with a single file: /etc/runlevel.conf. and if you don't like it, uninstalling filerc will convert that file back to the SysV hierarchy. thank god for filerc! martin [greetings from the heart of the sun]# echo [EMAIL PROTECTED]:1:[EMAIL PROTECTED]@@@.net -- three things are certain: death, taxes and lost data. guess which has occurred.

I like to create a disabled directory under there and move them in - makes them easy to "activate" by moving them up a level again, and the word "disabled" doesn't start with an S or a K and confuse anything. (That may have been for a Rage Mobility P/M instead of 128 tho) It was only in the last couple of weeks so I'm certain it's in the archive and in February sometime.
