I have another variant of the X20 a 2662-31G. This comes with the
mini-pci Lucent winmodem but no NIC. There is a binary driver
available from IBM (works great & easy to install) at the following link:
http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/MIGR-4VFTT3.html?Search.x=6&Search.y=5
(or just search IBM support for 'Linux X20') I have read several
accounts of people have success with the GPL Lucent drivers but I
haven't got round to trying these myself.

I bought mine second hand a few months ago & I must say I am very happy with
it. All the features work flawlessly under woody, and I take it everywhere
with me.

i have an X20 and run debian on it. very nice machine. i picked up the
ultrabase which allows you a bay to slide in a CD or CDRW, both of which
i've got working. the base also comes with a built in floppy if you need
that.

i also have a vaio 505 but prefer the X20. the latter has a built in
video port which i use often for presentations via an lcd. with the vaio
one needs to carry a port replicator to do this, which kinda defeats the
"lightweight" aspect of the machine. X20 also has much better battery
life than the vaio.

Hi,

Try doing a search for linux and laptop on google. You'll find several
really good sites dedicated to exposing the pro and cons of different
manufacturers.

I chose Dell Inspiron 8000 myself for the lovely screen. Works fine
with Debian.

Well... I can't really comment on specific manufacturers... But ii'm
currently typing this on a Toshiba Tecra 8000... It all works, (display,
sound, pcmcia) but I think it's a real underperformer.

The best thing you can do is look for a laptop and then check the
detailed hardware specs. Look at what kind of video-chip and sound-chips
are used, what other devices are installed, then check to see how well
these are supported.

I've just ordered a new laptop myself (www.pronote.nl promedion 14")
and just checked their specs page. There may be one or 2 features that
may not yet be supported (like firewire, winmodems etc) but if you make
sure sound, video, lan and key/mouse work you will probably be a happy
camper... all the other extra features will probably be supported in a
few months anyway (accept for some winmodems, sony i-link etc)

Bruce Perens claims that HP will now ship laptops with Debian
installed (previously they just did RedHat, I guess) although I think
they all have winmodems, which, from my experience is a definite
hassle. It might be worth calling them to find out more.

I have a very brief question. I'm not that familiar at all with
Debian, I used it a while back, although not a lot, and I certainly
qualify as a GNU/Linux neophyte. Enough with the introduction.

Re: Laptop suggestions

2001-06-07 Thread Dhruva Reddy
Although they seem reluctant to admit it, Toshiba's
laptops are fairly easy to get working with Linux. I
have installed Debian on a 2515CDS
(http://members.telocity.com/sledge1/2515CDS-HOWTO.html)
and a 435CDS.

Unless I am mistaken, there very few, if any
differences in the kernel from distribution to
distribution. So, if you successfully install one
distribution on a machine, you are very likely to get
another one working (of course, different
distributions come with different configuration tools,
but they all end up doing the same thing).

Where am I going with this? You may want to keep this
in mind as you check out the Linux Laptop site:

http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop

Good luck,
Dhruva

i've used a thinkpad 600, 365XD and currently a 240. the 240 is the best
of the bunch, and can be had on ebay for less than $700 (if you're
looking for an ultalight)

the windmodem in the 240 was even easy to get working (considering i'd
never used a modem under linux before in 2 years of using it). and the
soundcard is supported in the kernel (a lot of laptops cards work very
poorly under the OSS drivers).

anyhow, thats my thoughts.

I have had good experiences with Dell laptops and the Inspiron series in
particular. Good XFree86 support, and the sound cards are generally
supported by the 2.4 kernel, without any clunky external drivers.

My Inspiron 4000 worked on unstable without a hitch, with only minimal
configuration. Highly recommended.

For XFree86, I just copied one of the XF64Config-4 files from

can send you mine if you would find it of interest.

The modem works, despite the fact that it is a winmodem. Just install
ltmodem http://www.goldfisch.at/knowledge/inspiron4000/winmodem.html, and
the modem will be linked to /dev/modem.

I have had moderate success with ALSA drivers for the Maestro3, but the new
kernel support is much nicer (and easier to install). It should be included
as of the 2.4.2 kernels.

I use the Linksys PCMCIA card, and I have had not trouble with it. Can't
recommend it enough- it has been autoprobed on FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Redhat,

Haven't tried APM, since I have no real interest in that kind of stuff...

Hi.

I just got myself a Toshiba 3440CT. It's in the ultraportable category,
which means that it comes without internal cdrom or floppy. Getting
everything to run has been somewhat tricky.

Your email suggest that you live in Sweden so you might want to get the
machine from http://www.inwarehouse.se for about 13000 SEK. I've used
them a couple of times before this purchase and they've never given me any
trouble.

I have a 240 also. I'd be interested to know what you had to do to get the

there's a bunch of kernel modules you have to load, so i just made a

I'm currently using an Inspiron 7500 at 1400x1050. It's a lovely
display. Before XFree86 4.*, there were minor problems (some junk at
the very bottom of the screen), but it works fine with 4.0.3 (which is
what's in unstable now). (Presuming the 4000 comes with the same
graphics card (ATI 3D Rage Mobility---a Mach64), then I can send you
an XFree86-4 if you want.)

The winmodem in the machines (which is the common Lucent one in our
machines) is alleged to work with the partly-binary driver available,
but I've never tried it. It's not trivial to get working.

Not officially. However, the GATOS project
(http://www.linuxvideo.org/gatos/) have got drivers that do. Using these
I have managed to get DVD playback at fullscreen on my Thinkpad.

However the installation of the binary drivers for X 4.0.x seems to
be pretty straightforward, isn't it? Simply untarring the archive
into /usr/X11 should do the job.

I'll totally echo support for the IBM 600x, mine has a little over 20
days uptime right now, running 2.4.4 everything works perfectly for me,
i even had the built in winmodem working, but havent bothered in awhile
with it. I also have an IBM t20, which works wonder with linux/*BSD i
would usggest staying away from the 3com cards if you get an IBM, get
the intel built in ethernet instead, but other than that, they rock. I
also have an Acer extensa 367, its an older laptop, but it works
flawlessly under linux/*BSD. only gripe i have with acers and anything
other than IBM's is that touchpad crap. I have gotten so used to my
three button thinkpad with the button mouse thingie...i cant go
back...anyway. IBM is good, acer is good too. --gabe

Hello there!

I have a very brief question. I'm not that familiar at all with
Debian, I used it a while back, although not a lot, and I certainly
qualify as a GNU/Linux neophyte. Enough with the introduction.
Anyway, I've as of yet never used Debian on a laptop, and I'm
looking into picking up laptop computer, and I'm wondering if you
have any suggestions as to what I might want to pick up -- more
along the lines of manufacturers whose computers work well with the
latest version of Debian, rather than just the latest spiffy models,
since I'm not sure what I can afford.

Any personal experiences, or anything at all would be very helpful.

Pax.

i've used a thinkpad 600, 365XD and currently a 240. the 240 is the best
of the bunch, and can be had on ebay for less than $700 (if you're
looking for an ultalight)

the windmodem in the 240 was even easy to get working (considering i'd
never used a modem under linux before in 2 years of using it). and the
soundcard is supported in the kernel (a lot of laptops cards work very
poorly under the OSS drivers).

anyhow, thats my thoughts.

Re: Laptop suggestions

2001-06-06 Thread Dhruva Reddy

Although they seem reluctant to admit it, Toshiba's
laptops are fairly easy to get working with Linux. I
have installed Debian on a 2515CDS
(http://members.telocity.com/sledge1/2515CDS-HOWTO.html)
and a 435CDS.

Unless I am mistaken, there very few, if any
differences in the kernel from distribution to
distribution. So, if you successfully install one
distribution on a machine, you are very likely to get
another one working (of course, different
distributions come with different configuration tools,
but they all end up doing the same thing).

Where am I going with this? You may want to keep this
in mind as you check out the Linux Laptop site:

http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop

Good luck,
Dhruva

Bruce Perens claims that HP will now ship laptops with Debian
installed (previously they just did RedHat, I guess) although I think
they all have winmodems, which, from my experience is a definite
hassle. It might be worth calling them to find out more.

Hi,

Try doing a search for linux and laptop on google. You'll find several
really good sites dedicated to exposing the pro and cons of different
manufacturers.

I chose Dell Inspiron 8000 myself for the lovely screen. Works fine
with Debian.
