I had a similar problem once with a Radeon, although it wasn't Debian.
It worked OK after I told Linux not to use "framebuffer." I'm sorry I
don't recall the details, but if I remember correctly I had to edit my
bootloader config and remove the "vga=..." from the entry.

I have that exact chipset and am using the X packages that are in sid.

4.2 (actually I am using 4.1.99 from CVS, which another Debian user had
