If I had the WinXPPro installed that was shipped with the laptop I could figure out... Maybe that's the behaviour of the BIOS to hide the touchpad from the OS if a USB mouse is plugged in. Wait, my girlfriend had an IBM-laptop and depending on when she plugged the PS/2 mouse either both (trackpin + mouse) or just the mouse worked in Windows2k... It was an older model, maybe X series. If I deactivate "USB BIOS Support" (no "USB legacy support" in my BIOS as mentioned in the tread) I can leave the mouse plugged in during boot. But then I cannot use the mouse in the BIOS. The problem was that the BIOS "help" only said sth about deactivating boot from USB diskette/CDROM. My configuration for the archive: - Disable "USB BIOS Support" - psmouse compiled in the kernel (2.6.4) - uhci/ehci compiled as module - no hotplug (as it is started after init it should not matter if it runs - at that point psmouse knows about the touchpad) Thanks to all for helping! Oh, what a glorious day! Thanks for that hint.
For the record and those people using "psmouse" as a module: Try
unloading the module ("modprobe -r psmouse"), then load it with
the parameter suggested ("modprobe psmouse proto=imps"). My gpm
is reading from "/dev/psaux" with "-t imps2" and now works again
just like it did back in the good old days using a kernel
<2.6.1.
The cleanest way to permanently change this setting would
probably be a change to some file below "/etc/modutils" -- can
anyone help? Adding a line "psmouse proto=imps" to
"/etc/modules" would be a simple way to start with.
Cheers,

Try adding "psmouse.proto=imps" parameter to the kernel. Even though I don't use gpm, it brought back the taping funcionality to X. I don't use the extra xfree86-driver-synaptics driver, it made Mozilla go to previous pages for no apparent reasons. j. -- __ "We did a risk management review. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Thank you for your message! I agree that it does not look like a load problem, and that it happens while typing quickly. Do you know if one has the same problem with a kernel 2.4.x? I have installed also a Mandrake 10 and there everything works properly (both mouse and keyboard) with the 2.4.x kernel. With the 2.6 kernel the mouse tapping doesn't work. I took a look at the page suggested by Mattia Dongili, http://www.thorstenhaas.de/toshiba2410/ There 5 methods are suggested to cure the keyboard problem. I tried the last 3 methods, one disablign Xkb, the others using two different ways of suppressing keyboard bouncing while using Xkb (with AccessX and xkbset respectively). None of them seem to work in my case (in fact my notebook is Satellite M30, while the page refers to 2410). I also tried the method suggested by Marco Kraus (http://www.linuxstuff.de/toshiba-m30/toshiba-m30.htm). He says that one should disable synaptics recognition, forcing PS/2 support. Therefore I removed xfree86-driver-synaptics and configured X to use IMPS/2. Kraus also suggests a correction (not very clear) in one of the Kernel source files. This seems to be already done in the present version of the kernel. Nevertheless all this didn't work. Unfortunately this problem is pretty annoying. I hope there are some other ways to try. Thank you very much Alessandro Ghigi

It seems to me that I have read a bug report (unresolved) somewhere. Did you try bugs.debian.org? Fortunately, the install was trashed, and the issue went away with a sarge reinstall, using kernel-image 2.6.7. No idea why. FWIW, the keyboard had always been a problem on this laptop: When I first installed woody on it, it would repeat keys. It turned out that the keyboard hardware is buggy, and there was a kernel patch available. The patch seems to have been integrated, and the issue went away (with a high 2.4.x kernel IIRC). Also IIRC an X update (4.3?) was involved in resolving the issue in some way. At the time I also read that such keyboard problems are not unknown to Toshiba users in general. Maybe the 2 issues are unrelated, but at least they show that it may be a hardware prob. Regards, M

Re: Synaptics touchpad & keyboard on Toshiba Satellite M30
Hi. I think the Touchpad is Synaptics V5.9 (this is what windows says. I know no other ways to check, alas). Anyway your XFConfig is very interesting. Since I see the new kernel 2.6.8 has just been made available as a deb package, I'll recompile once more the kernel and I'll try getting some inspiration from your XFConfig (expecially MaxTapTime parameter etc.). Anybody has an idea for the keyboard problem (2 below)? The program, in either package, is tpconfig. And, afaik, corner taps aren't supported by tpconfig on synaptics. The old version of tpconfig (which is intended for more touchpads than just synaptics) used to let you set corner taps, but it didn't work, and the latest version I installed didn't even let me set them. derek -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: Synaptics touchpad?
I haven't quite followed this thread, but there are at least two packages, tpconfig and synaptics, that contain a program to control various features of the synaptics touchpad, such as tapping, dragging, tapping in corners etc. It might be what you need. I have an L400 which uses the same touchpad. Are you having trouble in X or in Console mode? I found that if GPM was running while in X the touchpad went crazy, so you might want to disable that. When I first setup X on this laptop, the X server could not find the mouse driver correctly and I had the same behavior as you. I edited the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file and pointed the driver at /dev/psaux instead of /dev/mouse. Now I am using the external port for a logitech mouse so I use a slightly different driver. Re: Synaptics touchpad on a Dell Inspiron 2500
Very well, but how do you do a "reset"? "reset" is not an option of tpconfig, and I can't see anything that will particularly help. I've never needed to use gpm for a mouse before - is this flakey behavior with it firing random events typical of gpm, or is it something specific to the touchpad? All of the synaptics package documentation, and the gpm & tpconfig man pages are pretty much useless in describing how to actually configure a mouse of any kind, let alone a touchpad. -- derek "Mark S.
