Maybe you can use an USB device (note I don't have any hands
on experience with this):

pvrusb is a Linux driver for the WinTV PVR USB (not the plain
WinTV USB), a USB MPEG2 encoder with a TV tuner.

Good luck; this can be very difficult -- and isn't that usable most of
the time. :)

> The question is:
> what must we install to use a TV as ad hoc external monitor ?

Well, you need a video card that supports TV-out under Linux, and a way
to enable that.

For an ATI chip this means that you need the TV connected at boot time,
and to find the 'atitvout' program (google should do it) which calls the
VESA BIOS to enable it.

If, and it's only if, that works, you should get 800x600 TV-out
tolerably working.

For other adapters, it depends on the card in question. A Matrox should
just work(tm), but I don't expect your laptop has one of those. :)

I don't know about any other video chipset but, in general, this is not
a well supported area. :/

You are probably best off getting one for home use, not trying to use
the TV.

If you're using the non-free nvidia-drivers, take a look into
/usr/share/doc/nvidia-glx/README.gz, especially

   APPENDIX J: CONFIGURING TV-OUT

The docs are actually quite good. I'll also attach my
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 which should be debconf-proof and uses different
server layouts for connecting TV, external monitor or a beamer. The
comments and names are german but your email-address suggests that
you'll be able to read it ;-)

Yes, you need to use the dongle that came with the laptop. It has the
odd-looking connector on one side, and 3 standard connectors on the
other. (S-Video, RCA, and... something else... not sure what. :) On my
I8K I have an ATI video card so I've been using a program called
atitvout. Since you're running the GeForce 2 you'll have to find
something that will work with your board. Good luck.

Hi all,

I've got a S§Savage/MX-MV (at least that's what lspci -v says) in my
ASUS laptop and installed s3switch. I get the TV-options listed in the
manpage and when I start s3switch. The Debian-Package-Version of
s3switch I installed is 0.0.20010719-4, so perhaps you have an older one.

Another reason could be that the TV-out-port on the card is not actually
connected, but I'd say this would be a job for your dealer to fix. I
already see people flaming me for this, but did you have any means of
testing it with another OS? (I for my part have W98 installed parallel
to Debian on my laptop)

I have the same card in my Toshiba Satellite 2800, and TV out works fine
for me.

I'm afraid you'll have to be more specific. Do you have a Fn-key
combination on your keyboard that can cycle between LCD/CRT/TV? If so,
what is the behaviour of the TV out port when doing this? (ie., no
display at all, cycle skips the TV, garbled output, etc.) Keep in mind
that there are different types of TV signals (NTSC,PAL) and your card
might be set for the wrong one- check the BIOS.

Also, there is a package called s3switch that can be used to control the
output of the S3 Savage card in software. You might want to give that a
try.
