I was having the same problem. Are you running as root? exit root and try as a 
regular user.

I have a hp dv6646
video card Nvidia GeForce 7150M / nForce 630M

when I run compiz --replace

I get this

obtener la conexión con la sesión: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes

security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network
connection was broken.)

I got the same error when I run

gconftool-2 --type string --set
/desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager compiz
