According to http://pciids.sourceforge.net/iii/?i=8086, this is an
i830 graphic chipset. And according to
http://www.xfree86.org/4.2.0/Status17.html#17 and
http://www.xfree86.org/4.1.0/Status17.html#17, it is only supported on
XFree 4.2, you should then try the experimental XFree 4.2 packages
from Branden Robinson at http://people.debian.org/~branden/

You may search the databases mentioned at
http://mobilix.org/pci_ids.html for more information about the 
VGA device. Also with XFree86 v4.x you may try XFree86 -configure 
and let X do the job for you. And there are many other websites
around describing Linux on SONY VAIO *505* series.

There you might find the CD rom trick, too. Since
http://www.linux-on-laptops.net seems not reachable today just use Google.
Probably you have to use the boot parameter
