screen size

2004-06-02 Thread Marvin Gerardo Aguero Salazar
Hi guys,

I guess this is an FAQ, but here I go anyway.

After several tries, I have successfully installed debian on my toshiba
setellite laptop. I
decided to follow Frans advice and installed 'Sarge'.

The problem I have is that it is not using the whole screen. I mean, the screen
displayed is too small and I have a black frame around the screen.

How can I make it use the whole screen?

TIA,

-Marvin

Or whatever the max res the projector supports.

Some don't even do 1024x768.

first, try "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" and step through the
configuration. if that does not help:

well, i do not have experience in fiddling with modelines, but you might
try to edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to extend the entry Modes for your
DefaultDepth in subsection Display of the section Screen to include
1400x1050:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "sis"
Monitor "LCD"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1400x1050" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
EndSection

if you have good luck it, it works. if your display starts showing
visual noise, shut down X (ctrl-alt-bksp) as fast as possible, this
could be dangerous. :)

Here are your possible S3 chip supports within the SVGA server.

> (--) SVGA: Unknown S3 chipset: chip_id = 0x8c12 rev. 11

It spots S3 but doesn't know what kind.

> (--) SVGA: chipset: generic

Sadly, it picks "generic" (its standard fallback) instead of "s3_svga"
the best human guess.

But, from your docs for the video card, you should be able to make a much
better guess than it, and force the Devices section to contain
chipset "s3_svga"
...or whichever. That is, if you insist on using the SVGA builtin instead
of XF86_S3 or _S3V as applicable.

Best luck!

Once you'll get XFree86 to recognize your chipset, you won't need
(presumably) to worry about these.

I suggest you to try XF86_S3V, as it *might* have more support for your
card than XF86_SVGA. If it has not, then your only solution is to boot
with framebuffer graphics (if your card is VESA 2.0 compliant), and use
the XF86_FBDev server. While this leads to unaccelerated graphics, there
is a Linux HOWTO which explains how to do it, AFAIK.

Anyway, you should drop a mail to the XFree86 developers and mail them
this log file, explaining them what graphics hardware you have, and wait
for their reply, perhaps they will tell you that it's not a problem and
you just have to add whatever configuration line in whatever file I do not
know of, either.

Goog luck though,

Hello,

No, this is not a Toshiba problem. The pixels (dots) on the laptop are
physical little cells, each with it's own transistors to make it work.
The pixels don't get bigger or smaller when you switch to a higher or
lower resolution -- just more or less are activated by the display
adapter in the computer. That's why the picture becomes larger or
smaller.

On a CRT monitor (like most desktops), the circuitry adjusts it's scan
size to fill the physical screen, regardless of the resolution, so the
picture fills the screen...

please see below for an explanation of the real problem here...

This is because Win98 is going to a resolution which fills the screen,
likely 1024x768.

[much snipping here...]

You don't say what video chip your system has, for now I'll assume it's
using the XF86_SVGA server. Look at the lines labelled 'Modes' in the
sections below. With the exception of the
"The 16-color VGA server" and "The Mono server" sections, all the modes
are 640x400 or 640x480. You aren't using either of them -- they

Okay, the fact is, your chipset seems not to be probed/detected/handled
properly. Perhaps you could send us a report of the XFree86 startup, that
you can make by

X -probeonly >xf-log
and then send us the xf-log.

This would enlighten the bpp problem, and probably the "not supported by
this chipset" (is it recognized at all, afterall ?)

Best regards
raph

2000-05-08 Thread Andrew McRobert
thanks for your help on this. I've installed X 3.3.6 and configured it with
your XF86Config file. I've also tried setting horizsync to 30-70 & 30-40.

I can get X to run in the small res (640x480) @ 8 bpp (by typing
startx -- -bpp 8) but on any other bpp (inc the default of 16), it won't
run. THe last couple of error messages are:

SVGA: 16bpp not supported for this chipset

** A configured device found, but display modes could not be resolved. ***

Fatal server error:
no screens found

any ideas? tks

Hi,
Have a look at the attached XF86Config. Read the comments, and try
it once you got XF86 3.3.6 (no proper Savage support before). Be very
careful with HorizSync and VertRefresh in your Monitor section.

If the first try gives you a garbled screen (or blinking, or
such), first of all try reducing HorizSync to reasonable settings
(30-40). Next, you may try to remove ModeLines which you know not to work
with your board.

Also, I did not put your "1024x768i" mode in the modes list which is
to be used by the server. Add it if the standard "1024x768" values do
not work.

hmmm

What configuration tool do you have, and what version of XFree do you
have?

I have an S3 Virge/MX chipset in my Toshiba. It's fine with XFree
3.3.6. According to the side of my SuSE Linux box the S3 Savage3D and
Savage4 are supported, but the Savage is not. (But look
below...XFree86.org says the Savage/IX-MV is suported in 3.3.6.)

Here's part of a page from the XFree site
(http://www.xfree86.org/4.0/Status27.html#27):
3.3.6:

-
 Support (accelerated) for the S3 911, 924, 801, 805, 928, 864, 868,
964, 968, Trio32, Trio64, Trio64V+, Trio64UV+, Aurora64V+, Trio64V2,
PLATO/PX is provided by the XF86_S3 server and the XF86_SVGA server
with the s3_svga driver. Support (accelerated) for the ViRGE, ViRGE/VX,
 ViRGE/DX, ViRGE/GX, ViRGE/GX2, ViRGE/MX, ViRGE/MX+ is provided by
the XF86_S3V server. Support (accelerated) for those ViRGE chips, as
well as the Trio3D and Trio3D/2X is provided by the XF86_SVGA
server with the s3v driver. Support (accelerated) for the Savage3D,
Savage3D/MV,
 Savage4, Savage2000, Savage/MX-MV, Savage/MX, Savage/IX-MV and
Savage/IX is provided by the XF86_SVGA server with the s3_savage driver
 (CHECK: is this support Linux-only?).

4.0:

Support (accelerated) for the ViRGE, ViRGE/VX, ViRGE/DX, ViRGE/GX,
ViRGE/GX2, ViRGE/MX, ViRGE/MX+, Trio3D and Trio3D/2X is provided
by the "s3virge" driver. Support for the other S3 chipsets has not
yet been ported.

Summary:

Only the ViRGE and Trio3D chipsets are supported in 4.0. All of the
other chipsets are only supported in 3.3.6.

Hi there.

I cannot be of help myself, since I have a much older Toshiba... but I am
writing you to suggest
1) checking the Toshiba website (http://www.tce.co.jp/linux): They do not
support Linux yet, but give some installation info and technical details
for some models.
2) subscribing to the Toshiba-LinuxUsers mailing list (details on the same
web page). There are lots of Toshiba experts out there ready to help.

This is because Win98 is going to a resolution which fills the screen,
likely 1024x768.

You aren't using either of them -- they are
boilerplate sections generated by the configuration tool.

That's why your system always displays a small screen -- it is being
told to by the XF86Config file you are using.

So, what configuration tool are you using to create your XF86Config
file?
What is your video chip set?
What resolution is your laptop screen capable of?

Tell us these things, and someone can probably help you get set up.

RE: laptop screen size problem

2000-05-05 Thread SMITH Paul
Andrew,

I have a Sat 2520 CDS which is a passive screen
I have found that if i run the graphics at a lower res like 640x480 than the
800x640 screen which the computer runs it will only display in a smaller
window. Such as win98 and linux.

If you select the full resolution of the LCD, it may use the full screen. I
think this is a Toshiba problem.

Cheers
Paul

This is a classic symptom of using the XF86_SVGA server with an incorrect
chipset value. (eg. "generic") A lot of XFCom server drivers are builtin
now to the SVGA server so it isn't necessarily completely wrong, but I have
found a lot of cases where the automagical configurators won't set the
chipset. (the 320x200 is its support for "generic VGA" compatibility in
case anyone was wondering.)

So, you'll have to ask the SVGA server what chipsets it supports.
XF86_SVGA -probeonly 2> dumpout
...should result in a file where you can read (1) about the server's
supported names for chipsets, and (2) any other exciting errors it
might have for you, so you can solve them next.

btw, it's not so much the screen that you have to worry about (as long as
horizsync and vertrefresh ranges are close to what yours will accept) - it's
the builton video card type you need to know. This is what will hate the
poor dotclock modeline. This is what needs the right server to behave itself
in good colormodes. etc.

Well, if it *worked* vidtune would only help you tune the modes you have
access to already, so it's not what you need yet.

XF86Setup itself uses the VGA16 server. Picking through mazes of twisty
little ATI chipset names (mostly alike) is a pain in the toot.

Funny, this should be easy to tag for in the configurators. Looking at my
own instance of XF86_SVGA on venus, I don't see "neomagic" as one of the
names, otoh... there are a -lot- of entries in the form (two or three letters)
(a bunch of numbers) (maybe another letter or two) ... so maybe you also need
to know exactly -which- neomagic chip.

SuperProbe should be able to tell you, if you aren't afraid to have it try.

It can often get even better than that, assuming you have the video RAM to
pull it off. You'll still be stuck with a maximum LCD size though.

What is the output of "X -probeonly" ?
What resolutions does it recognise ?

ctrl-alt- swaps between the resolutions you have
defined.
I'm not sure how you press the + sign on a numeric keypad using a notebook.
You can try editing you /etc/X11/XF86Config file so that only the 1024x768 modes
used. ie. comment out the orginal Modes line
#Modes "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768" "1280x1024"
Modes "1024x768"

You could try changing the order if you wish to use the other modes.
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

There is also a default mode setting I think. Or was that a default depth
setting ?
Check the manual pages with "man XF86Config".

Ok - the XF86Setup error is this:
_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect - Can't connect error no 111

I get it when it Attempts to start the X server.
hope that helps a bit more

laptop screen size

2000-04-20 Thread stephan
I have just almost successfully installed X on my laptop. My last
problem is this:
I have a 1024x768 screen, yet I can only seem to get it to come up as
320x200.
So basically there is a small window in the middle of my screen that
displays X,
and the graphics are rather large (it is running at 8bpp as opposed to
16). I'm really
not sure where to go with this. I've tried xvidtune but that gets a
floating point exception,
xf86config gives me these results, and XF86Setup seems to do more damage
than good
(I'm sorry that isn't very specific, but I've just fought it four or
five times in a row and I
didn't right down the error message these last two times). I had X
running fine with redhat
and suse, so I know it is possible, I'm just not quite sure how.

Sony vaio N505VE
neomagic card
SVGA server
1024x768 screen, should be at 16bpp

Thanks for any help in advance - if more info is needed from me please
let me know.
