   * Revert "Turn embedded-library into a classification tag. (Closes:

automatic rejects. So let's revert this change. First, #932634 has
seen no coordination with FTP masters. Second, it confuses developers

Package: lintian
Version: 2.15.0
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

In lintian/data/binaries/embedded-libs, the criterium to detect if a
library was linked statically against libyaml is to verify the string:

libyaml   ||(?m)^did not find expected

But this string is also found in package rust-yaml-rust.

This caused a false positive when packaging bat [1].

I heard you like spell-checking, so I ran your spell-checker on your
spell-checker:

   $ grep '^[^#]' /usr/share/lintian/data/spelling/corrections | cut -d '|' -f3
| sort -u | spellintian | grep -vF '(duplicate word)'
   ocurrence -> occurrence
   ocurrences -> occurrences
   prefered -> preferred
   transfered -> transferred
   transfering -> transferring

(Maybe worth adding something like the above to the test suite?)

Package: lintian
Version: 2.115.3
Severity: normal
Control: block -1 by #1028970

tar complains to stderr about features of archives that it does not
understand, but the maintainer says that this is all right and consumers
of tar's output need to deal with it (see #1028970 for details).

How to reproduce:

$ libcrypt-x509-perl_0.55-1_amd64.changes
Warning in processable ./libcrypt-x509-perl_0.55-1.dsc: Tried to issue
duplicate hint in check unpack: unpack-message-for-source tar: Ignoring unknown
extended header keyword 'LIBARCHIVE.xattr.com.apple.lastuseddate#PS'
E: libcrypt-x509-perl source: unpack-message-for-orig
libcrypt-x509-perl_0.55.orig.tar.gz . tar: Ignoring unknown extended header
keyword 'LIBARCHIVE.xattr.com.apple.lastuseddate#PS'
W: libcrypt-x509-perl source: newer-standards-version 4.6.2.0 (current is
4.6.1.0)

If this is not a real error then maybe it should have pedantic severity
instead.

Greeting,

my recent upload of file (1:5.43-3) to experiental broke lintian's autopkgtest.

Possibly this is the relevant section.

While I didn't check what precisely went wrong, I reckon it's a slightly
changed output on gz-compressed files.

Can you please check and adjust your tests? I'd like to upload to
unstable in a week or so, and I'd prefer to have no autopkgtest breakage
by then.

Sorry for the mess, and I'm sorry this will happen again - upstream
changes file's output every now and then. The only help I can provide is
to add your package to the list of those that should receive a
notification when uploading a new upstream version, see

https://sources.debian.org/src/file/1%3A5.41-4/debian/README.Maintainer/#L16

If you want lintian to be included, just say the word.

Regards,

Christoph

Dear maintainer(s),

Your package has an autopkgtest, great. However, it fails currently
everywhere except on amd64. Can you please investigate the situation and
fix it? I copied some of the output at the bottom of this report.

The release team has announced [1] that failing autopkgtest on amd64 and
arm64 are considered RC in testing as are regressions on all release
architectures.

Package: lintian
Version: 2.115.3-68-g091d167f6
Severity: important

This issue is slightly related to the issue which made me find #1027949
as it probably also only surfaced when libpath-tiny-perl got bumped from
0.124 to 0.144 which added more pedantic error checking:

When trying to run lintian against a package where it expects an
upstream signature (probably because debian/upstream/signing-key.asc
exists), it started to throw an error message instead of the relevant
tag:

Hi!

It seems that glibc forces an executable stack on MIPS architectures
(see #1022787).

On mipsel and mips64el architectures this is causing for all shared
libraries the emission of the executable-stack-in-shared-library tag.

As that report does not seem that it will be handled for bullseye, it
would be nice if the tag could be silenced on these architectures, as
there is nothing maintainers can really do about this, which is
actually leading them into dead ends and incorrect fix attempts.

Thanks,
Guillem

The update-debian-copyright tag gives bad advice:

N: The most recent copyright year mentioned for files in ./debian lags behind
N: the year in the timestamp for the most recent changelog entry.

This is a fully normal thing to have. You only update the copyright year
for something when *you* do something relevant for copyright law (that
is passing the threshold of originality) in that year.

Having this tag is misleading because it’ll lead to people bumping the
year because they don’t know better and just to silence lintian.

The missing-prerequisite-for-pyproject-backend check appears to only
look for the prerequisite packages in Build-Depends, but since they
aren't needed for clean, they could be in Build-Depends-Indep, leading
to false positives.

Package: lintian
Severity: normal

As one can see here:

https://installer-team.pages.debian.net/-/debootstrap/-/jobs/3528761/artifacts/debian/output/lintian.html

it complains when this bpo version is built:

https://salsa.debian.org/installer-team/debootstrap/-/commit/e2adc51823c1a1179edce2106c870c588e806393

This is a consequence of the default behaviour of the salsa-CI/pipeline, adding
a version-bump:

  https://salsa.debian.org/salsa-ci-team/pipeline#debian-release-bump

combined with this pattern only accepting digits after `bpo`:

https://salsa.debian.org/lintian/lintian/-/blob/ea05801918ed0e87824d89bf16a6ee166450b977/lib/Lintian/Check/Fields/Distribution.pm#L95

I suppose replacing that with this:

  if ($version=~ /~bpo(\d+)\+(\d+)(\+salsaci)?)$/) {

would fix that.

Cheers, Phil.

Hello,

A common way to use the pybuild debhelper addon is to build-dep on
dh-sequence-python3, which is provided by the dh-python package. Please
update the test to accept this as a valid fulfillment of the requirement.

One package that I see this error with is flask-appbuilder 4.1.3+ds-1.

Thanks,

Dear Maintainer,
inconsistent-appstream-metadata-license , tag gives the below description:
The specified AppStream metadata file specifies a metadata_license field
but this does not match the files in debian/copyright.

While reading the above, I didnt get the point that upstream metadata
lincese should be added to debiab/copyright too.

It would have been good if something like the following was included:

"The upstream metadata_license should be represented in debian/copyright"

Hi!
The tag init.d-script-needs-depends-on-lsb-base has been redundant for
quite a while, as lsb-base was transitively essential. Now it's even more
redundant, as the package is no more (it was an implementation detail of
the init script boilerplate that cost us 55KB of metadata).

Removing the dependency from individual packages would be the usual
clean-up that tends to linger for 20 years and no one cares -- but it
turned out that debootstrap doesn't understand Provides. Thus, we
had to bring back a dummy package that costs us all the required files:
 * changelog
 * copyright
 * dpkg/info/.list
 * dpkg/info/.md5sums
 * 20 lines in dpkg/status
 * ~1KB of cruft + uncompressible hashes in apt indices

Of course, shaving a bit off the minimal install isn't _that_ important,
but as only 3(?) packages get installed by debootstrap, I'd still want
to drop that by Bookworm.

And for that purpose, I'd prefer to not annoy maintainers by lintian
warnings, make them add overrides, and otherwise waste time.

Thus: please drop this tag soon.

Then you could add a reverse tag, lsb-base-depends-is-obsolete, but
that's an aforemented 20 years cleanup that has no urgency.

Meow!

Severity: minor

The REUSE specification encourages upstreams
to put complete license text in files with SPDX-based names (for example
LICENSES/MIT.txt for Expat's license), and reference the licenses from
source code using SPDX declarations like "SPDX-License-Identifier: MIT".

Upstreams are encouraged to use a canonical form for the license text,
which can be fetched with the `reuse download` command. This canonical
form is soft-wrapped (no line length limit, no newlines except where
semantically significant) and therefore has very long lines.

It would be good for Lintian to suppress
very-long-line-length-in-source-file for these license files: none of
the reasons cited in the tag description seem like they apply to license
text. I'll send a patch when I get a bug number back from the BTS.

Hi,

Gpl-2+ (used in d/copyright) is equivalent to gpl-2.0+ used in
appstream metadata, so this is a false positive. Were GNU to
hypothetically release a GPL 2.1, and were upstream to switch to it,
the onus would be on the Debian maintainer to update d/copyright. It
also seems wrong to emit this at the warning level for this specific
case.

If lintian is encouraging maintainers to use the "gpl-2.0+" notation
rather than gpl-2+ in d/copyright, then it should emit a different
(lower severity than warning) tag for that case.

It seems clear to me that (gpl-2.0+ = gpl-2+), so it looks like the
correct approach is to use a table of equivalent license notations to
prevent the false positive. Apologies if bias has prevented me from
deeper analysis or seeing other solutions.

Thanks!
Nicholas

Package: lintian
Version: 2.114.0
Severity: wishlist

dbus supports policy files in both /usr/share/dbus-1/system.d and
/etc/dbus-1/systemd. I recently released dbus 1.14.0, which officially
deprecates installing packages' default policies into /etc/dbus-1/systemd,
instead reserving it for the sysadmin. This is the same idea as the
difference between /lib/udev/rules.d and /etc/udev/rules.d.

It would be useful for Lintian to have a dbus-policy-in-etc tag, mirroring
udev-policy-in-etc. I attach an implementation (based on commit 11926263,
and might need rebasing on current git, which I can't do because salsa
is down at the moment).

/usr/share/dbus-1 has worked since Debian 9, and the transition from
/etc/dbus-1 to /usr/share/dbus-1 is already about ⅓ complete:
/usr/share/dbus-1/system.d is currently used by 75 policy files in 61
binary packages, while /etc/dbus-1/system.d is used by 135 files in
124 binary packages.

Thanks,

Subject: [PATCH] desktop/dbus: Check for dbus policy files installed into /etc

dbus 1.14.0 officially deprecates this, following the same principles
used for udev rules. /etc/dbus-1 is now reserved for the sysadmin
(analogous to /etc/udev), and OS packages should use /usr/share/dbus-1
(analogous to /lib/udev).

Not opinion. Just the point of what the meaning of _text colors_
*rollingeyes* in a license do mean. I just ignored them and then those
two licenses differ.

Yes, thanks! I'd prefer to have a good explanation, too.

Please also note that I didn't mark the bug report as wontfix, just as
moreinfo.

Bug#1029055: Debian Expat and SPDX MIT License Text

2023-01-16 Thread Soren Stoutner
There appears to be some question of opinion as to if the Debian MIT (Expat)
License is
the same as the SPDX MIT License.

https://www.debian.org/legal/licenses/mit[1]

https://spdx.org/licenses/MIT.html[2]

Can somebody at Debian Legal please comment?

And just to state the obvious, this is the wdiff which I made for myself
during our previous discussion in #1002053:

As mentioned before exactly that exception is the reason why I think
that these two license texts are not the same. I though see no
explanation what the meaning of the colors on the SPDX website is.
Until that is clarified, for me, the two texts clearly differ for me.

Bug#1029055: MIT License Text

2023-01-16 Thread Soren Stoutner
I just noticed that AppStream specifies that their licenses use the text listed
by SPDX.

As the text of the MIT License at https://spdx.org/licenses/MIT.html[1] is the
same as the
Debian MIT License (Expat) at https://www.debian.org/legal/licenses/mit (except
for the
instructions in blue), there probably shouldn’t be any question that these are
simply two
different names for the same license (for reasons that probably shouldn’t
surprise me,
open-source people can’t just get along and agree on a name).

Bug#1029055: lintian: Lintian does not recognize the AppStream's metainfo.xml MIT license is the same as Debian's Expat license

2023-01-16 Thread Soren Stoutner
Package: lintian
Version: 2.115.3
Severity: wishlist

Debian has recently started requesting that graphical programs install
AppStream metainfo.xml files.

https://appstream.debian.org/sid/main/issues/electrum.html

The AppStream specification has a very restricted listed of possible licenses
for the metainfo.xml file.

FSFUL

https://www.freedesktop.org/software/appstream/docs/chap-Metadata.html#tag-metadata_license

No specific text is given for what they mean by the MIT license. The MIT
license is a bit problematic because there are more than one license that has
been called the MIT license over the years.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIT_License#Ambiguity_and_variants

https://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.en.html#Expat

When most people say MIT they mean Expat, so it is standard in the industry to
assume that when no specific text is given MIT == Expat.

Debian prefers the Expat name to the MIT name for this reason.

https://www.debian.org/legal/licenses/mit

The documentation for the Debian machine-readable copyright file says the
following.

"There are many versions of the MIT license. Please use Expat instead, when it
matches."

https://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/copyright-format/1.0/#license-short-name

The Electrum package, which is licensed upstream as MIT, is listed as Expat in
debian/copyright according to the instructions in the copyright format and
because the upstream MIT license matches exactly the Debian legal Expat example.

Because the AppStream metainfo.xml file does not allow the use of the Expat
name, or it will fail validation with appstreamcli, I licensed the metainfo.xml
file as MIT. This made it easy to submit it upstream, which has already
accepted it for the next release.

In the meantime, I included the metadata.xml file in the debian directory for
the current release. However, Lintian complained that Expat != MIT.

I considered creating a override, but according to the instruction at
https://lintian.debian.org/manual/index.html#overrides it seemed more
appropriate to file a bug against Lintian, as every time there is an AppStream
file with a MIT license this will create a false positive if matched against
Expat.

To work around this, I currently created a duplicate section in
debian/copyright, which doesn't seem like an efficient long-term solution.

https://salsa.debian.org/sorenstoutner/electrum/-/blob/master/debian/copyright

I personally wish that those creating licenses had been more careful about the
naming thereof. Secondarily, I wish that AppStream had followed best practices
and allowed the use of the Expat name. However, given that neither of those
things are within my control, the next best option is to make Lintian smart
enough to work around this specific situation.

This was originally discussed at
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1002053 but was moved to this
separate bug report because it didn't end up being the same root problem.

Could reproduce it when I tried to build it in pbuilder for the
release. So I have a chance to investigate.

Will look into it now, but this probably means, I won't manage to do
the upload before Tuesday evening (in European timezones).

On the positive side: That means that Salsa CI has time to catch up
with my commit "speed". *rollingeyes*

Bug#1029053: lintian: Should report Vcs-Browser fields pointing to Salsa/Gitlab/Github and ending in .git

2023-01-16 Thread Axel Beckert
Package: lintian
Version: 2.115.4~git
Severity: wishlist

In
https://salsa.debian.org/lintian/lintian/-/merge_requests/390#note_367701
Willian Desportes (X-Debbugs-Cc'ed) suggested to implement the same as
Lintian MR !390 (GitHub and GitLab URLs shouldn't end with .git) also
for Vcs-Browser. With which I agree.

Edward Betts figured out that there are indeed about 1800 packages in
Debian where this tag would be emitted:
https://codesearch.debian.net/search?q=path%3Adebian%2Fcontrol+Vcs-Browse.*salsa.*git=0

Then again Gitlab (and hence also Salsa) as well as Github do a redirect
to the correct URL if you access these URLs with a browser. So I'd say
at most "Severity: info", maybe even only "Severity: pedantic".

Hi Aurelien,

your reply is just in time! Because about five minutes ago, I started
to continue working on Lintian for this evening. The plan: Making the
long overdue upload as I fixed the last part of arm64 autopkgtest
failures last night. :-)

Given we got no decision from the MIPS porters before the toolchain
freeze, we'll have to live with the executable stack on mips*el for
bookworm.

Therefore I believe it's a good idea to disable that tag on mips*el on
the lintian side.

Seems as if I should used more smileys on that sentence. Consider
having been trolled by myself. ;-)

Or said otherwise: I read exactly that page (and
https://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.en.html#Expat) before
sending my reply.

Yes, but IMHO https://spdx.org/licenses/ managed to get quite a good
list on all the variants including unamigous short names for them.
Except that they miss the "Expat license".

Anyone who tells you there is a One And Only MIT License is trolling you. ;)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIT_License#Ambiguity_and_variants[1]

"The name 'MIT License' is potentially ambiguous. The Massachusetts Institute
of
Technology has been using many licenses for software since its creation; for
example, MIT
offers four licensing options for the FFTW[2] C source code library, one of
which is the GPL
v2.0[3] and the other three of which are not open-source[4]. The term 'MIT
License' has also
been used to refer to the *Expat License* (used for the XML parsing library
Expat[5]) and to
the *X11 License* (also called '*MIT/X Consortium License'*; used for X Window
System[6]
by the MIT X Consortium[7]). Furthermore, the 'MIT License' as published by the
Open
Source Initiative[8] is the same as the Expat License. Due to this differing
use of terms,
some prefer to avoid the name 'MIT License'. The Free Software Foundation[9]
argues that
the term is misleading and ambiguous, and recommends against its use.”

https://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html#Expat[10]

As noted in the quote above, and in the second link, the license that is most
commonly
called the MIT License is what is appropriately referred to as the Expat
license in Debian.

https://www.debian.org/legal/licenses/mit[11]

If you prefer I can open a separate bug about this issue, as it is my belief
that Lintian
should consider an Expat license in debian/copyright to not be a conflict with
a MIT license
in an AppStream metainfo.xml file.

Fixed. Thanks again.

> > (Maybe worth adding something like the above to the test suite?)

Implemented (before fixing the above to verify that the test works) in
https://salsa.debian.org/lintian/lintian/-/commit/375b9b46b0b16a6f8e75b0f4c3189de59c04eb8b

Implemented via Array::Utils "intersect" function. Had to add a new
build-dependency for that, but oh well.

JFYI: There is the request to disable this tag completely on MIPS

Now I wonder if this would actually help or worsen the situation for
the glibc maintainers.

Re: Understanding and handling a "groff-message 734" failure

2023-01-16 Thread c . buhtz

Hi,

I was pointed to the solution in the German Debian-Forum [1].

Please take this as a feature request. "groff-message" doesn't help to
know which commandline tool generated that error?
Depending on your docu [2] it seems to be "man" itself and not a tool
called "groff" or something else.

I was able to reproduce the error on the original upstream source file.

$ LC_ALL=C.UTF-8 MANROFFSEQ='' MANWIDTH=80 man --warnings -E UTF-8
-l -Tutf8 -Z "backintime-config.1" > /dev/null

troff: :734: bad argument name 'P'

The problem in that line is that there are three backslashes ("\\\")
where there should be only two.
"man" itself isn't very helpful because the error message doesn't
explain that problem.
