Package: lintian
Version: 2.104.0
Severity: normal

The package-supports-alternative-init-but-no-init.d-script check has
this text at the end:
N: Refer to Debian Policy Manual section 9.11 (Alternate init systems)
N: for details.

However, section 9.11 reads "This section has been deleted." in the
Policy. So at minimum that needs to be fixed :)

Furthermore, the check tests for the absence of an init.d script, and
specifically says: "[...] must provide init.d script for starting that
services with sysvinit". My understanding is that this is not a "must"
anymore, and thus this check needs to either go away, or its language
changed to be more like "would be nice to ship as sysvinit if you can".

(Practically speaking, I maintain a package that ships a systemd unit
file, but does not ship an init.d file, and it'd be extra hard to do so.
I've added a lintian override, but I question the accuracy and value of
this check more broadly.)

Thanks,
Faidon

This seems fixed; the changelog was missing a Closes, so doing this
manually. Thanks everyone!

Just building a Python package with this version, and I receive the
info tag:

I: python3-bytecode: package-contains-documentation-outside-usr-share-doc
[usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/bytecode-0.15.0.dist-info/top_level.txt]

I think (almost) every Python package has a top_level.txt file that is
automatically built, naming the top-level Python package, so this file
should be excluded from this test. (The file always lives in a
*.dist-info or *.egg-info directory.)

Best wishes,

Thanks for mentioning this. Seems to have slipped through our fingers
and indeed was fixed by this commit, but it doesn't close this bug
report. (Maybe the committer missed that there is a bug report for
that.)

I've just retroactively added the "Closes" to Lintian's
debian/changelog as there weren't any other changes yet, so "gbp dch"
will still work fine. *phew*

I've just also added trixie and forky so this is already fixed for the
next stable release, too. :-)

> But unless it's backported to bookworm, the problem you highlighted
> remains.

Needs to migrate to testing first. And I'd be glad if someone else
could take care of the backport. *hinthinthint* :-)

Note: Running the testsuite this time requires a debhelper version
newer than in stable (but satisfiable) in stable-backports due to the
testsuite expecting dh_movetousr being active. Sorry 'bout that. Feel
free to suggest (or even implement) a better solution to that.

> > and there has not been any new Lintian uploads since Lintian
> > 2.116.3 in February 2023.

Please note that February 2023 was during the freeze and Bookworm was
released in June. And I indeed remember that we didn't managed to get
out a 2.116.4 with some more last-minute fixes. Sorry for that.

And yes, there was exactly one year without a Lintian releasae. :-/
While there were a ton of new and old contributors in this release, it
seems that nobody else than me dared to actually do a Lintian release.
But I was waylaid for months for multiple reasons. (But I think,
Bastièn probably would have done one if I wouldn't have become active
again recently. :-)

Package: lintian
Version: 2.115.3
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Take a package that has a lintian-overrides for an Error.

Run lintian with "--show-overrides" options.

Even though lintian doesn't report any error, the package's exit code is 2.

If you remove the "--show-overrides" option, exit code is 0.

This can be easily tested for example by building a source package from which
you removed the debian/copyright file.
Then add this override in debian/source/lintian-override:

THEPACKAGE source: no-debian-copyright-in-source

Build the soure package, and run lintian (2.115.3) towards it.

In this example, since no-debian-copyright-in-source is a warning, I use also
"--fail-on error,warning"

With
lintian --fail-on error,warning --show-overrides ../PACKAGE.dsc
resulting exit code is 2

With
lintian --fail-on error,warning ../PACKAGE.dsc
resulting exit code is 0

Hi,

When preparing stable or security updates, the convention is to use debXuY
whether it is a NMU or not, without making it e.g. deb11u1.1. Thus please
stop emitting this tag when a stable update is detected.

no-nmu-in-changelog should keep being emitted.

Thanks,

Dear maintainer,

At mentors.debian.net, we use the bpo version of lintian to run on
uploaded packages. But this 2.115.1 version report the latest
standards-version as unknown.

Could we please have a bpo build for 2.116.3?

Mentors has been upgraded to bookworm and we no longer have the need
for a backport to bullseye.

Thus closing this bug report.

Hi,

lintian in bullseye is emitting this, e.g. while building the hw-detect
source package:

E: hw-detect source: required-field debian/control@source Standards-Version
E: hw-detect source: required-field hw-detect_1.145.dsc Standards-Version

That's one example where all binaries are udebs so there's no need for
such a field.

It'd be best to avoid popping up errors for that; they're distracting
and serve no purposes. (Once that's fixed, and other possible issues are
ironed out, I wouldn't be against getting that into bullseye, so that
anyone preparing d-i packages from then-stable doesn't have to worry
about those.)

Thanks for considering!

Cheers,

Package: lintian
Version: 2.104.0
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Running lintian from bullseye on udebs (which do not need to have a
Standards-Version header) results in lintian throwing an error. e.g.:

  E: partman-basicmethods source: required-field debian/control@source
Standards-Version
  E: partman-basicmethods source: required-field partman-basicmethods_72.dsc
Standards-Version

This was not the case with 2.15.0 (from buster)

Having bisected lintian's git repo, it seems that the change in behaviour was
introduced by commit:

  54a3c2437eadb0684f6762a81a82163f36562d3e

Cheers, Phil.

Package: lintian
Severity: normal

As one can see here:

https://installer-team.pages.debian.net/-/debootstrap/-/jobs/3528761/artifacts/debian/output/lintian.html

it complains when this bpo version is built:

https://salsa.debian.org/installer-team/debootstrap/-/commit/e2adc51823c1a1179edce2106c870c588e806393

This is a consequence of the default behaviour of the salsa-CI/pipeline, adding
a version-bump:

  https://salsa.debian.org/salsa-ci-team/pipeline#debian-release-bump

combined with this pattern only accepting digits after `bpo`:

https://salsa.debian.org/lintian/lintian/-/blob/ea05801918ed0e87824d89bf16a6ee166450b977/lib/Lintian/Check/Fields/Distribution.pm#L95

I suppose replacing that with this:

  if ($version=~ /~bpo(\d+)\+(\d+)(\+salsaci)?)$/) {

would fix that.

Cheers, Phil.

Dear Maintainer,

Running lintian for a package that contains 'Vcs-Git' field with the
following value

https://github.com/greenplum-db/greenplum-db-for-debian.git -b main [gpdb]

results in the 'vcs-field-has-unexpected-spaces' tag being reported. If
I change the value to

https://github.com/greenplum-db/greenplum-db-for-debian.git [gpdb] -b main

the warning is not printed. According to the Debian Policy Manual
(S5.6.26)

> In the case of Git, the value must have the following syntax:
>
> [ " -b " ] [ " [" "]" ]

Package: lintian
Version: 2.115.3
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Recently, java-common was updated in unstable and then in testing, it changes
the default JDK in Debian from OpenJDK11 to OpenJDK17. Thus I think the line 21
in data/java/constants should be changed from
default-bytecode-version = 56
to
default-bytecode-version = 61
in order to avoid warnings like

--8<--
W: beast2-mcmc: incompatible-java-bytecode-format Java17 version (Class format:
61)
N:
N: The package contains Java class files with a minimum requirement on the
N: listed Java version. This Java version is not supported by the default JVM
N: in Debian and is therefore likely to be a mistake.
N:
N: Please refer to Bug#673276 for details.
N:
N: Visibility: warning
N: Show-Always: no
N: Check: languages/java
N:
--8<--

which I got with beast2-mcmc 2.7.1+dfsg-1. The package was successfully built
using OpenJDK17 and is now in unstable.
I also just got a similar warning with libjgraph-java, which should hit
unstable within a couple of hours.

Thanks for all the work on Lintian!

Cheers,

Interestingly this did not show up in the test suite before I uploaded
2.116.0 on 17th of January 2023. It though did show up while testing
for the 2.116.1 upload. Hence I fixed with the last commit for 2.116.1
(https://salsa.debian.org/lintian/lintian/-/commit/76b92553) which I
uploaded on 25th of January including that fix.

Hence closing. Thanks for the bug report anyway and sorry for not
having noticed it in time!

Will update the changelog entry for 2.116.1 retroactively to mention
this bug report.

Regards, Axel

Dear Maintainer,

When doing a QA revision over the package "gox", I received the warning:

  W: gox source: unknown-field Go-Import-Path

However, the right field name is XS-Go-Import-Path, not Go-Import-Path. The
field is present in debian/control on gox:

  XS-Go-Import-Path: github.com/mitchellh/gox

If the XS-Go-Import-Path filed is removed, the following message is shown:

  I: gox source: missing-xs-go-import-path-for-golang-package

The Debian bug #984719 explains how much the XS-Go-Import-Path field is needed.

Package: lintian
Version: 2.115.3
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: r...@debian.org

A section 8 manual page for a binary in /usr/libexec triggers:

I: kafs-client: spare-manual-page [usr/share/man/man8/kafs-dns.8.gz]
N:
N: Each manual page in /usr/share/man should have a reason to be there. This
N: manual page does not appear to have a valid reason to be shipped.
N:
N: For manual pages in sections 1 and 8, an executable (or a link to one)
N: should exist. This check currently considers all installation packages
N: created by the same sources, as long as they are present.
N:
N: Please refer to Manual pages (Section 12.1) in the Debian Policy Manual
N: and Bug#583125 for details.
N:
N: Visibility: info
N: Show-Always: no
N: Check: documentation/manual
N: Renamed from: manpage-without-executable

I think this is incorrect and section 8 is the appropriate section for
documenting root-only helper programs that may be installed in
/usr/libexec. (At least, if section 8 is not the right section, I'm not
sure what the right section would be.)

Fix is probably to just add /usr/libexec to the list of directories
checked for binaries to satisfy this test.

In nvidia-cuda-dev I have

I probably shouldn't ship that file, but I don't think it is

Package: lintian
Version: 2.114.0
Severity: important

There seems to be an ongoing transition in Lintian, in which hints that
report a filename or line in an ad-hoc way are being converted to "pointed
hints" that use a new format with the filename in square brackets.

One of the design decisions that keeps Lintian's value high as a
QA tool is that all of its hints (formerly known as tags) can be
overridden if the maintainer has assessed the hint and determined that
it is a false-positive or otherwise inapplicable to this particular
package. Unfortunately, changing a hint to a pointed hint invalidates
most overrides for that hint (unless they use a very broad wildcard match,
which seems like a bad idea since it could hide unrelated instances of the
hint that genuinely indicate a problem). I can see why it is considered
valuable to have a consistent format for all hints, but mass-invalidating
existing overrides seems like a high price to pay for that.

This is particularly frustrating when the overrides that would be required
to silence a hint on lintian.debian.org and the overrides that would
be required to silence a hint with the released version of Lintian are
mutually incompatible. https://lintian.debian.org/tags/mismatched-override
currently reports 15K mismatched overrides among 3K source packages,
which seems like a lot.

It would be useful if Lintian could treat previously-valid overrides as
still being a valid way to override the new form of a tag, particularly
in the common case where "foo usr/share/bar" has been replaced by
"foo [usr/share/bar]".

Package: lintian

Severity: wishlist

Debian has recently started requesting that graphical programs install
AppStream metainfo.xml files.

https://appstream.debian.org/sid/main/issues/electrum.html

The AppStream specification has a very restricted listed of possible licenses
for the metainfo.xml file.

FSFUL

https://www.freedesktop.org/software/appstream/docs/chap-Metadata.html#tag-metadata_license

No specific text is given for what they mean by the MIT license. The MIT
license is a bit problematic because there are more than one license that has
been called the MIT license over the years.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIT_License#Ambiguity_and_variants

https://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.en.html#Expat

When most people say MIT they mean Expat, so it is standard in the industry to
assume that when no specific text is given MIT == Expat.

Debian prefers the Expat name to the MIT name for this reason.

https://www.debian.org/legal/licenses/mit

The documentation for the Debian machine-readable copyright file says the
following.

"There are many versions of the MIT license. Please use Expat instead, when it
matches."

https://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/copyright-format/1.0/#license-short-name

The Electrum package, which is licensed upstream as MIT, is listed as Expat in
debian/copyright according to the instructions in the copyright format and
because the upstream MIT license matches exactly the Debian legal Expat example.

Because the AppStream metainfo.xml file does not allow the use of the Expat
name, or it will fail validation with appstreamcli, I licensed the metainfo.xml
file as MIT. This made it easy to submit it upstream, which has already
accepted it for the next release.

In the meantime, I included the metadata.xml file in the debian directory for
the current release. However, Lintian complained that Expat != MIT.

I considered creating a override, but according to the instruction at
https://lintian.debian.org/manual/index.html#overrides it seemed more
appropriate to file a bug against Lintian, as every time there is an AppStream
file with a MIT license this will create a false positive if matched against
Expat.

To work around this, I currently created a duplicate section in
debian/copyright, which doesn't seem like an efficient long-term solution.

https://salsa.debian.org/sorenstoutner/electrum/-/blob/master/debian/copyright

I personally wish that those creating licenses had been more careful about the
naming thereof. Secondarily, I wish that AppStream had followed best practices
and allowed the use of the Expat name. However, given that neither of those
things are within my control, the next best option is to make Lintian smart
enough to work around this specific situation.

This was originally discussed at
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1002053 but was moved to this
separate bug report because it didn't end up being the same root problem.

Dear Maintainer,

In lintian/data/binaries/embedded-libs, the criterium to detect if a
library was linked statically against libyaml is to verify the string:

libyaml   ||(?m)^did not find expected

But this string is also found in package rust-yaml-rust.

This caused a false positive when packaging bat [1].

I heard you like spell-checking, so I ran your spell-checker on your
spell-checker:

   $ grep '^[^#]' /usr/share/lintian/data/spelling/corrections | cut -d '|' -f3
| sort -u | spellintian | grep -vF '(duplicate word)'
   ocurrence -> occurrence
   ocurrences -> occurrences
   prefered -> preferred
   transfered -> transferred
   transfering -> transferring

(Maybe worth adding something like the above to the test suite?)

Package: lintian

Severity: normal
Control: block -1 by #1028970

tar complains to stderr about features of archives that it does not
understand, but the maintainer says that this is all right and consumers
of tar's output need to deal with it (see #1028970 for details).

How to reproduce:

$ libcrypt-x509-perl_0.55-1_amd64.changes
Warning in processable ./libcrypt-x509-perl_0.55-1.dsc: Tried to issue
duplicate hint in check unpack: unpack-message-for-source tar: Ignoring unknown

keyword 'LIBARCHIVE.xattr.com.apple.lastuseddate#PS'
W: libcrypt-x509-perl source: newer-standards-version 4.6.2.0 (current is

If this is not a real error then maybe it should have pedantic severity
instead.

Greeting,

my recent upload of file (1:5.43-3) to experiental broke lintian's autopkgtest.

Possibly this is the relevant section.

[

]

While I didn't check what precisely went wrong, I reckon it's a slightly
changed output on gz-compressed files.

Can you please check and adjust your tests? I'd like to upload to
unstable in a week or so, and I'd prefer to have no autopkgtest breakage
by then.

Sorry for the mess, and I'm sorry this will happen again - upstream
changes file's output every now and then. The only help I can provide is
to add your package to the list of those that should receive a
notification when uploading a new upstream version, see

https://sources.debian.org/src/file/1%3A5.41-4/debian/README.Maintainer/#L16

If you want lintian to be included, just say the word.

Regards,

Christoph

Dear maintainer(s),

Your package has an autopkgtest, great. However, it fails currently
everywhere except on amd64. Can you please investigate the situation and
fix it? I copied some of the output at the bottom of this report.

The release team has announced [1] that failing autopkgtest on amd64 and
arm64 are considered RC in testing as are regressions on all release
architectures.

More information about this bug and the reason for filing it can be

Package: lintian
Version: 2.115.3-68-g091d167f6
Severity: important

This issue is slightly related to the issue which made me find #1027949
as it probably also only surfaced when libpath-tiny-perl got bumped from
0.124 to 0.144 which added more pedantic error checking:

When trying to run lintian against a package where it expects an
upstream signature (probably because debian/upstream/signing-key.asc
exists), it started to throw an error message instead of the relevant
tag:

$ lintian /var/cache/pbuilder/result/screen_4.9.0-4_amd64.changes

Hi!

It seems that glibc forces an executable stack on MIPS architectures
(see #1022787).

On mipsel and mips64el architectures this is causing for all shared
libraries the emission of the executable-stack-in-shared-library tag.

As that report does not seem that it will be handled for bullseye, it
would be nice if the tag could be silenced on these architectures, as
there is nothing maintainers can really do about this, which is
actually leading them into dead ends and incorrect fix attempts.

Thanks,
Guillem
