so that every binary will have its own prerm and postinst scripts (issue
#315318). I tried calling the scripts debian/binaryX.{prerm,postinst}, but

Thanks for the response Patrick. It turns out that I was omitting to copy
the prerm/postinst scripts (to debian/X/DEBIAN/). I'm used to debhelper
which does this automatically, but in this case I'm dealing with a bare bones
makefile.
