You should at the very least include the LaTeX source in the source package (hopefully upstream already does this). During the build process, build a text-only version (using catdvi FE), and optionally include the PDF if that is helpful in addition. Re: Bug#652464: ITP: aguilas -- A web-based LDAP user management system
Hi, I would like to update this ITP: * I'm no longer using martinez.faneyth [at] gmail.com. From now on i will use luis [at] huntingbears.com.ve for all my Debian contributions. (is there an easy way of changing this bug's owner?). * The application has received the following improvements: - Fixed SQL Injection vulnerability. - Prevented direct loading of libraries. - Included documentation. - Automated maintainer tasks through Makefile. * The Debian packaging has the following properties: - Automatic configuration of database through dbconfig-common. - Automatic configuration of webservers (apache, lighttpd). - Debconf interface for filling in Aguilas configuration. - English and Spanish l10n for debconf templates (for now). * I already packaged aguilas and is waiting for a sponsor [1]. * Since upstream changed, the version that i filled in for the ITP (1.0.0) is no longer the same i packaged (1.0.1-1), so (i guess) this ticket won't close with this upload . The package is fairly straightforward, and the new patches have already been reviewed by a Debian Member. Please consider sponsoring it. Bug#659498: RFS: solarpowerlog -- photovoltaic data logging
Package: sponsorship-requests Severity: wishlist Dear mentors, I am (still) looking for a sponsor for my package "solarpowerlog". As now the boost transition has been completed, it is time to reissue my request. See for http://lists.debian.org/debian-mentors/2012/01/msg00012.html for my last request. Re: How to convince maintainer to use --as-needed?
* Dmitry Smirnov [120211 02:50]: > But sometimes an innocent call to library causing package to inherit the whole > hierarchy of needless dependencies. > And this affect not just obvious things like slower start-up and installation Once one library is actually needed, the whole hierachy is still pulled in at run-time recursively. (And as those are dependencies of the dependencies, they are installed anyway, so no benefits at installation time). > Package maintainers can surely track problems to --as-needed if that's the > case and here we have hope because many packages using it already for years > successfully. How many package maintainers know all the functions of their applications and regularily test all of them? > > Unless you are entangled in libraries ignoring usual best practises and > > ignoring library borders in their headers (libglib, libboost), there > > might be better solutions than --as-needed. > > I'd like to learn more about --as-needed alternatives. > Could you suggest any resources/guidelines, please? --as-needed is used mostly a solution used against uneeded libararies linked against. It can make more sense to fix the build system or work around it to cause the reason instead of the symptoms. There are mostly 6 cases: 1) No symbols of the library are needed, but it's initialisation code does things (like enabling extra functionality and the like). In this case --as-needed break things. 2) a program is linked against a library without any reason here just removing the -l is all that is needed to do. 3) a program is linked against a library as another program created from the same build system needs it. This might need bigger modernisations in the upstream build system (like not using the outdated generic LIBS with autoconf but instead export that as special variable). As this has direct benefits for the generated binary that is usually easy to get upstream. 4) libraries linked against because they are dependencies of libraries needed. This is usually done so that it is also possible to link programs statically. Getting this fixed upstream is usually not that easy. 5) libraries sometimes needed and sometimes not needed, depending whether something is inlined or not. This can be harder to fix upstream. It might be fixable locally if that is the same on all debian architectures. Here --as-needed has the biggest advantages, though it can make sense to limit it to one library. (-Wl,--as-needed -lm -Wl,--no-as-needed). 6) libraries whose headers make the program call functions from other libraries. Those may look like 4) but one can never know which libraries are actually used, so it is not easily fixed. So here there might be no other solution that --as-needed, but it's effects are also limited, as those libraries will not likely change incompatibly independently (at least not the dependet on without the depending library and if they do a recompile might still be needed as the used headers might no longer be compatible). Note that many build systems can be modified without needing patching by giving them make variables. This can be easy with case 4 (just overriding the variable containing the libs with less libs), but in most cases impossible for case 3 (as everything is in one variable). > Surely there must be software incompatible with --as-needed. But what are the > chances to experience it? How to identify situation when --as-needed is likely > to cause troubles? The likely causes of trouble I can think of are: - libraries needed only for their initializers - libraries where order matters because of their initializers (like libXaw) - a program inlining stuff incompatible with a different library loaded Bernhard R. Bug#658306: preload/0.6.4-2 [ITA] -- adaptive readahead daemon
I've updated a new version to mentors.d.n. There are absolutely no lintian complaints, even when in pedantic mode. The changelog now looks as follows: * New Maintainer (Closes: #646216) * Switched to 3.0 (quilt) source format. * Corrected the logrotate location. Thanks to Tobias for the patch. (Closes: #619384) * Improved init.d script + Add init.d status support. Thanks to Peter Eisentraut for the patch. (Closes: #645156) + The script now provides itself. * Created debian/watch. * Fixed a spelling mistake in the manpage. * debian/copyright now refers to GPL-2 rather than to the GPL symlink. * Bumped debhelper compatibility up to level 9. The package can be found at mentors, as usual: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/p/preload/preload_0.6.4-2.dsc Would anyone be willing to upload? On Sat, Feb 11, 2012 at 2:40 PM, Bartosz Feński wrote: > Reviewed and uploaded. Thanks for fixing all problems! Here is my post-upload review for packages uploaded without any comment: The patches seem to include copies of parts of debian/changelog, I would suggest dropping those. In the manpage patch, I don't think you need to include the \ at the end of the line in the Makefile. The adjust-sleep-intest-mode patch looks like a workaround? What would the correct way to do that? Debian is transitioning from /var/run to /run, please fix the varrunowndir patch. If appropriate, please foward the patches upstream and indicate if/where they have been forwarded using the DEP-3 Forwarded header: http://dep.debian.net/deps/dep3/ The debian/README file doesn't look nessecary at all. Why does the cronjob set MAILTO=""? You have some typos in comment in the lintian overrides file and in the Debian changelog. You may want to run wrap-and-sort -s to make diffs of debian/control and other files more readable. The upstream README contains installation and build requirements. You should remove the embedded uthash code copy and build-depend on uthash-dev instead. Various debian/* files contain unnessecary comments and blank lines. Probably more, but I stopped reviewing when I reached the copyright file, which tries to be DEP-5 but is not. -- bye, pabs http://wiki.debian.org/PaulWise -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-mentors-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe".
