I support Thomas' application to become a Debian Maintainer.
I have sponsored several of his packages working with the Java team and they
have been good quality. I'm confident of his ability to update them witho
ers [1].
I have reviewed a number of Niel's packages within the Java team both for
updates and new packages and have found his work to be of high quality and
consider him competent enough to become a Debian Maintainer. Therefore, I
support his application.

(just try saying "a NMU" out loud, the glottal stop is horrible)

Yup, this is what I'd like to see as well.
So far I don't think I've seen anyone objecting to the overall approach
though, which is good. I think it allows us to start discussing more
specific implementation details.

Shall we say decoupling it from specific technical
abilities such as upload rights and package maintenance?

many things here I agree with, I don't think we can tackle
them all at once here. I'm just trying to work on one thing.

Oh, absolutely, I really want to streamline it where possible. I've been
saying this since I was in NM (-:

have doubts about someone in DM it means that we would rather they went
through the more formal and thorough checking that NM involves. Detailed
investigation into their current work is what their AM is for.

I hardly think a week is a long time to wait.

that the account creation wait should be shorter; by making access
control more fine grained it makes it easier to delegate at least some
of the decisions and tasks for those access permissions which aren't as

That's why I prefer to be granting things based on what permissions you
need and what technical ability you need to do them. With project member
being orthogonal.
