A 5.2.2 with this backported is at http://people.debian.org/~rene/libreoffice/5.2.2? Can you confirm it's faster now compared to 5.2.1-3? Regards, Rene

I hope others will find If you need a loads of opening dialogues, you do somethig wrong, I'd say. For the other bug in GNOME3 (Format->Character) - people should use Styles for reoccuring things and not hard formatting. Similar in your case, probably, But as said, your claim that "it's not impossible to work fluidly" is wrong, the dialog is there fast enough in cases you need it. IMHO. (And see my other reply.) Hello, fluidly work isn't possible. You have to wait everytime a dialog box opens. I leave libreoffice-gtk3 uninstalled. I hope others will find this thread, are not annoyed and disappointed about the speed of libreoffice. Best regards, Andreas

Since libreoffice-gtk3 5.2.1-3 the duration for the action above is about 3s now. Without libreoffice-gtk3 installed it is immediatly. Regards, Andreas

Hey, easy, we are living in patriarchal, hierarchical structure ;-) I teached my daughter to do an upgrade from time to time herself. That is better than doing nonsense with the machine, as playing games all the day. Let's put aside the details, it seems to be the broader topic of the two parallel universes of programmers and users. ;-) > > I assume there is some kind of mechanism of libreoffice to detect > > the environment it is running in. O.K., that is to high for me to help myself. But such negligibilities often are relevant for users to keep on that ugly windows. Best regards, Andreas

(Or do you have libreoffice-gnome installed even for your xfce?) What do other users of your desktop use? But yeah, stuff like this is hard to debug. > How shall I convince others, especially my wife and daughter, to use > libreoffice instead of Microsoft Office if they tell me they don't like > it, because it is slow? They use xfce, too? You don't need to, given you are the admin of the machine, not your wife and your daughter. > I assume there is some kind of mechanism of libreoffice to detect the > environment it is running in. Yes, there is. https://cgit.freedesktop.org/libreoffice/core/tree/vcl/unx/generic/desktopdetect/desktopdetector.cxx There problem here AFAICS is that Xfce is also detected as GNOME somehow (othwise you probably wouldn't even get Gtk2 UI).. https://cgit.freedesktop.org/libreoffice/core/tree/vcl/unx/generic/plugadapt/salplug.cxx But yes, we probably could add a new "fallback list" there just for Xfce. But for now (you of course need libreoffice-gtk2 installed), try export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk (export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=xfce probably won't work given the "fallback list" above) Regards, Rene

For a "normal" user it is very difficult to find it out. Since a system uprade libreoffice is unusable slow. What would you think what is the reason for? It took me a long time to realize it is a libreoffice-xfce problem. I searched the internet up and down and couldn't find any hint. How shall I convince others, especially my wife and daughter, to use libreoffice instead of Microsoft Office if they tell me they don't like it, because it is slow? What is my suggestion? I assume there is some kind of mechanism of libreoffice to detect the environment it is running in. Would it be a great thing to say libreoffice to use -gtk2 if running under xfce and to forbid to use -gtk3? I can't imagine that would need more than minimal efford. Best Regards, Andreas

So? And what do you suggest? There's a easy workaround: use -gtk2? Because XFCE4 is GTk2... I don't believe we should add a Breaks: on xfce4 to libreoffice-gtk3... > It is reproducible. This of course shouldn't happen, but... As long as there's stuff around using "old" Gtk (xfce, cinnamon(?)) and stuff with "new" Gtk (gnome, mate)... Regards, Rene
Bug#836531: libreoffice-gtk3: LibreOffice is unusable slow with XFCE4
Package: libreoffice-gtk3 Version: 1:5.2.0-2 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, this problem only occurs with libreoffice-gtk3 installed and XFCE4. The speed is normal when using KDE, it is normal too with XFCE4 and libreoffice-gtk3 deinstalled. It is reproducible. Install libreoffice-gtk3, start xfce, start libreoffice. Open an empty writer or calc document, it doesn't care. Very impessively is selecting one cell in the empty calc document. Press the right mouse button, then select Format cells. The duration until the dialog box appears is about one minute. This is only an example, every action is very, very slow. -- System Information: Debian Release: stretch/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 Kernel: Linux 4.7.0-2.slh.2-aptosid-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores; PREEMPT) Locale: LANG=de_DE.utf8, LC_CTYPE=de_DE.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) Versions of packages libreoffice-gtk3 depends on: ii dpkg 1.18.10 ii libatk1.0-0 2.21.90-2 ii libc6 2.24-1 ii libcairo-gobject2 1.14.6-1+b1 ii libcairo2 1.14.6-1+b1 ii libdbus-1-3 1.10.10-1 ii libdbus-glib-1-2 0.106-1 ii libgcc1 1:6.2.0-2 ii libgdk-pixbuf2.0-02.34.0-1 ii libgl1-mesa-glx [libgl1] 11.2.2-1 ii libglew1.13 1.13.0-2 ii libglib2.0-0 2.49.6-1 ii libglu1-mesa [libglu1]9.0.0-2.1 ii libgtk-3-03.21.5-3 ii libice6 2:1.0.9-1+b1 ii libpango-1.0-01.40.2-1 ii libpangocairo-1.0-0 1.40.2-1 ii libreoffice-core 1:5.2.0-2 ii libsm62:1.2.2-1+b1 ii libstdc++66.2.0-2 ii libx11-6 2:1.6.3-1 ii libxext6 2:1.3.3-1 ii uno-libs3 5.2.0-2 ii ure 5.2.0-2 Versions of packages libreoffice-gtk3 recommends: ii libreoffice-style-tango 1:5.2.0-2 Versions of packages libreoffice-gtk3 suggests: ii libreofficekit-data 1:5.2.0-2 -- no debconf information
