I put some symlinking code into the libc6 postinst because 
/usr/include/paths.h defines _PATH_MAILDIR to /var/mail, and there is 
quite a bit of software about that uses that macro to find where the 
mail spool is.

I also second this proposal.

The change would have to be in the bootdiscs first, right?
