then i only got a black screen after boot and the machine freezes

iMac G3's monitor is very sensitive to the sync frequency: you must
create an xorg.conf with correct values for HorizSync and VertRefresh.
I can come later with the details, but they can be found in some old
threads, too.

If I install any of the GUIs the computer goes as far as a black screen.
At the boot prompt is there something I can enter to edit
