Another update. I used the patch as provided by Adrian. I rebuilt the driver and installed it on the iMac G3 / 500. The patch makes X work much better, I get a lot further now. Unfortunately, after a lot of fiddling around with xorg.conf files and ModeLines and stuff I gave up for the moment. I
