Looks like 31r1 includes 2.6.8.
I have 2.6.8 on my PowerBook G4 and it works fine so probably it's a
different problem.
(I also have Ubuntu 5.04 with kernel 2.6.10 and it works fine too)

asked, digit install video=ofonly.

This is similar to the problem I have with my PowerBook G4 when I
install kernel 2.6.12 or 2.6.14; this should be fixed in 2.6.15 but I
still have to try this new kernel.

Sarge Stable 3
I've tried and failed on an iMac G4.
You may use (instead) oem-banner; this is a variable which stores
only text and it is shown when OF is entered.
