Use 15?
Any depth greater than 8 gives the same error.
Could you post your kernel options? This sounds like you're not using the
aty1288fb driver.

You can easily verify that by catting

That would probably find aty128fb. :-) My bad. Another post revealed the
user had used the novideo option, bypassing the aty128fb init.

I now have a configuration file for X that sort of works, using the fbdev
device. But I can't get any color depth more than 8bpp to work. And also,
the colors are messed up at 8bpp...

I found out what the problem was with X. The iBookDV install guide on
hadess.net turns out to be a little out of date. You should not put the
novideo line in your yaboot.conf, and then aty128fb will work correctly,
even under an old (2.2.x) kernel.

I'd have expected
(I've tried playing with hadess.net's suggested XF86Config, but I never got
it to do anything but lock up my iBook.)
