Putting knowledge of which video cards support which features is not
the job of the installer.

There almost certainly exist powerpc systems with video cards that could
run gnome 3.x.

It is not a question of where it is compiled, but rather of the level
of opengl required by gnome. That makes any older video card a problem,
even on a PC.

So then I must ask this question, given that Gnome fails to work for
PowerPC, at least for Apple computers. Why is it that during the install
process is Gnome even listed as a desktop environment to install?

Does Gnome need to be compiled on Apple PPCs for it to run?

As a follow up.
1) I found that attempting to use the boot option 'Linux
radeon.agpmode=-1' had no affect.

2) Removing gnome and installing XFCE worked well. I am now using Debain
8 on the G5 iMac.

3) On the G3 iBook I am working on installing Gentoo. We will see how
usable that computer can be

4) I have not ever run MATE, so I will try to install that on my G4.

Thank you all

I cannot find the thread anymore but basically GNOME 3.x has extra
requirement, which older graphics cards do not have. As suggested, you
should pick another desktop environment. I would also avoid KDE. I am
a happy xfce user, but MATE may work if you want to stay closer to
GNOME 2.x (not tested)

If you think it's an ATI driver problem, try a newer kernel from
jessie-backports.

That said, it might be an X ATI driver problem (in which case you may as
well give scratch a hug).

Searching for your error
(https://duckduckgo.com/?q="Oh+no!+Something+has+gone+wrong";)
gave this thread which may be of assistance:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/debian-26/oh-no-something-has-gone-wrong-on-restart-4175510641/

But then the solution there was to ditch Gnome for KDE. From a quick scan
of the answers it appears that a gnome component was crashing.

Another quick possibility might be to give another login manager a go. I
ditched gdm3 for lightdm a while back as gdm3 was giving me weird issues.

Seeing as I remember getting your error message, that may have been the
solution to it for me (but this was ages back and memory is hazy).

Have you tried this in yaboot

Linux radeon.agpmode=-1

The G3 is an iBook. From http://everymac.com I see the card is an ATI
Mobility Radeon 7500 (2X AGP) with 32 MB of SDRAM

The G4 Gigabit computer has a AGP ATI Radeon 9600 256MB Mac Pro card.
This is an after market card.

The G5 iMac has ATI Radeon 9600 with 128 MB of DDR SDRAM (AGP 8X
support). Again per everymac.com listing.

Of course the G3 and G5 are factory as they can not be changed out. Only
the G4 has another card then factory.

So it would appear everything is Radeon and I think there is a big
problem with ATI cards and this version of Debian. If I recall, but I
have not searched the archives of this list.

have not seen that error before. What graphics card are you using?
