Major update of python-support

2009-02-18 Thread Josselin Mouette
Hi,

I have just uploaded a new version of python-support to experimental. It
includes several major changes:
  * Installation directory moved from /var/lib/python-support
to /usr/lib/pymodules
  * Public modules moved from /usr/share/python-support/$package
to /usr/share/pyshared
  * Public extensions moved
from /usr/lib/python-support/$package/pythonX.Y
to /usr/lib/pyshared/pythonX.Y
  * Private modules are now handled per-file instead of
per-directory, allowing exclusions and dealing better with
packages sharing a private modules directory

I’m pretty confident that the existing packages will work correctly with
this new version since the runtime is still very robust (although of
course a surprise is always possible). Only the following packages are
expected to fail, and I will file bug reports so that a solution is
found before python-support goes to unstable:
gnumed-client phenny pymol

However I wish I could be so sure about building packages, but the
metadata format has changed so you can expect some big failures. I have
used a few sample packages during my testing, but this is far from
enough.

As such, it would be very nice if people maintaining various kinds of
Python packages could test building them with the new version and see
whether the resulting packages actually work. This way, we could avoid
triggering dozens of FTBFS bugs when making the change.

Thanks,

More info and interest

2009-02-18 Thread Michael Hanke
Hi,

[cross posting to debian-science and debian-python]

I want to draw you attention to an RFP that might deserve more
attention:

  http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=515319

It is concerned with a Matlab-to-Python "converter". The project aims to
aid the conversion of Matlab code to Python.

While this software seems to be in a rather early stage of development
it has nevertheless the potential to become a mighty tool to facilitate
the migration of an unestimable amount of Matlab code to a free
language/computing environment and hence a global migration toward the
use of free software.

These guys published a paper about their compiler in the journal
'Frontier in Neuroinformatics' (open-access as it should be ;)

  http://www.frontiersin.org/neuroinformatics/paper/10.3389/neuro.11/005.2009/

According to the journals access statistics it receives an impressive
amount of attention. It would really cool to have that beast in the
flagship of free software (which is Debian for those who wonder ;).

Thanks,

Michael

Sure, I have forgot about this. I have already committed the skype4py
Debian files and made the necessary changes for uploading the package to
unstable.

David, could you please take a look at what I did?

I will add you to the team this evening, you have commit rights already
as you're a DD.

I just filed a request to join the DPMT at Alioth, but I am not sure it is
enough. Please, add me (alioth login: rafael) to the team.

As I already said, there is no compelling reason to stay in /var, and
this can be changed without too much breakage - I just couldn’t do that
right before the lenny release.

I just proposed /usr/lib/pymodules/pythonX.Y instead. Do you think that
location is suitable?
