That seems like there are some things missing from debian/*.install.

It seems that freevial had no reported security issues before, so it
looks like you can ignore that item.

Yes, but I tried debhelper-compat 13 and dh, which failed most
probably due to --fail-missing. Now I tried to keep the former
cdbs-based rules and I got it built, so it looks promising.

Thanks for the pointer, I was aware of several archived bugs in
freevial but didn't know or remember that the security tracker
was also affected by removals from unstable.

I have more cycles for this again, and see the 1.0 release still hasn't
