I should be more careful with my choice of words.

If I'm not mistaking, in English, "it's a shame" can have 2 meanings.
One is like "shame on you", which isn't what I meant. The other one is
"I regret that", which was what I originally wanted to say.

Does it make more sense now?

If you don't actually think it's a shame he wants to participate in Debian, it 
might be better not to say so.  I think your response it logically disjoint 
from your original mail, so I don't see any point in further conversation on 
the matter.
