I have worked around this problem by uncommenting this line
in /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc
TerminateServer=true
So, it looks like the X server does not respond to the reset signal properly.

I was just about to submit a bug report describing the same symptoms using
current sid kmail. So please take this as a confirmation that the bug still
exists.
Also, the workaround of using the setting automatically expunge in account
general config, still works as well.
