[update] I noticed that I have a lot of unused packages, so I auto-removed them: apt-get autoremove and still I cannot start KDE session as a regular user from KDM, however from KDM I can switch to console login, log in as regular user, and then I can run startx which starts KDE session

Hello, Sounds like you did not upgrade everything? I did those steps: 1) run synaptics 2) choose kde category 3) sort by status 4) select all installed packages 5) mark them as upgrade 6) mark superkaramba as remove After upgrade I couldn't login so I installed superkaramba back. Again, note
