reinstalling kdm 3.3.1-3 and replacing kdmrc during kdm install, the
functionality seems to be restored.

thanks for your quick reply. the point just is, that i did not touch the
configs manually. they were created by the login manager plugin of kcontrol
and could not be reversed...
