Та да, все заработало уже. Спустя годы после начала освоения Emacs вдруг
подумалось, а чего бы прямо из-под него простой текст не напечатать. А
там - lpr по умолчанию. Да еще и дефолтный принтер для CUPS, это совсем
не дефолтный принтер для lpr. И на этом месте я запутался в ключах...

Спасибо огромное всем, кто отозвался. Все ведь закончилось хорошо :)

На нативных строгий инкремент дает алгоритм, вшитый в GNU tar с
опцией --listed-incremental. Соответственно искать обвязку либо писать
самому.


Именно на этом я велосипед и строил. Но есть ряд нюансов (победимых, но 
имхо дорого).

borg очень понравился, на нем и остановлюсь.
