RFS: macaulay2 1.17.1 (again)

Unfortunately, macaulay2 hasn't migrated to testing yet due to an 
autopkgtest regression in i386 and armhf.


I believe I've fixed the issue (and a few others that were causing build 
failures on other architectures).  Would anyone be able to review/sponsor?

There is a build problem on arm64 "96 - ContactTest (Timeout)". Please
fix or disable this
only test. I have restarted the build but it did not succeed.
