Serious problem after tetex security update

2004-11-26 Thread Andreas Goesele
Hi!

After the last security update with libkpathsea3 and tetex-bin my
LaTeX installation doesn't work any more. When I try to compile a
LaTeX file I get:

I can't find the format file `latex.fmt'!

What can I do to get a working LaTeX installation back? I urgently
need it!

Thanks a lot in advance!

I found the solution. There is a bug in the new package:

/usr/share/texmf/web2c does not link to /var/lib/texmf/web2c (as it
should) but to /var/lib/texmf/web2 (note the missing c). As a result
the link wasn't even created in my case. (There was no
/usr/share/texmf/web2c after the security update.)

Is it enough to report that here, or should I report it somewhere else
too?

Odd. It worked for me (though I haven't tried any LaTeX commands):

 (0) keeling /home/keeling/.mozilla/plugins_ ls -al /usr/share/texmf/web2c
 /var/lib/texmf/web2c /var/lib/texmf/web2
ls: /var/lib/texmf/web2: No such file or directory
 lrwxrwxrwx1 root root 20 Nov 25 11:06
 /usr/share/texmf/web2c - /var/lib/texmf/web2c/

This link wasn't created in my case. But maybe I was wrong about the
reason. Just to test it I reinstalled the new package and this time
there was no problem.

The wrong link to the non-existing /var/lib/texmf/web2 in the package
might be irrelevant as the right link should be created by the
postinst script. (Anyway, so it seems to me.)

No idea why the link wasn't created when I first updated the
package. But as long nobody else gets the same problem I assume there
is no bug ...

Sorry, this comment was a little too cryptic for me. Could you expand
a little bit on it? Do you want to imply in any way that this patch
wouldn't be enough to secure the kernel? If so, why?

Thanks a lot in advance!

strange entry in /etc/init.d

2002-02-17 Thread Andreas Goesele

Hi,

unexpectedly I found my LANG locale env variable change. I took a look
into /etc/environment and found as last entry:

LANG=C

I found this strange as I thought for bash one would write

export LANG=C (or LANG=C and then export LANG)

and my own entry

export [EMAIL PROTECTED]

wasn't changed.

The file was modified while the machine was unattended and downloading
or possibly starting to install for an apt-get update.

Is it possible that some package would add such a line to my
/etc/environment? What package could that be? Or should I worry about
an intruder?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Why do I get mail for root of sunbird.aimcomm.com?

2002-02-14 Thread Andreas Goesele

Hi,

all of you probably got the following mail:

Subject: Re: root's home world readable (part 24 of 24)
Message-Id: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Feb 1 04:58:15 sunbird uservd[19110]: call connected
Feb 1 04:58:15 sunbird uservd/check[19109]: uservd[535] is running

Feb 1 04:58:15 sunbird uservd/check[19109]: uservd[535] is running

OK, I kind of understand, why I got this one: It came over the
list. But I got a bunch of messages to root (and some privileged user)
of sunbird.aimcomm.com which did not come over the list. How is this
possible?
