ss2 tftpimage size limitation?

hello is it possible that sun4c (here a sparcstation 2) has a problem with too big tftp-images? as one can find with google, there is no way to boot the tftpboot.img's from debian on sun4c. so i tried to build some myself what resulted in a working tftpboot.img as long as it was smaller than

egcs64 x gcc-3.2.3 and kernel

I know that kernel (2.4 series) can be compiled with old egcs64 or with the latest gcc-3.2 or gcc-3.3. I just wonder if there is (or should/could be) any difference (in size, performance, stability etc.) -- Honza Houstek
