Weird error: display and crtc error

However, df tells me I've only used 23 % of capacity; there is still lot of free space for /. Twinview put panels on the other screen
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hello, I've reinstalled nvidia-glx and all the packages going with it, in order to use NVIDIA proprietary drivers for my NVIDIA Geforce 8400 GS. Using nvidia-settings GUI, I managed to get TwinView activated; briefly, this is what allows you to get a dual screen. This dual screen is probably virtually defined as one screen with a bigger dimension. In any case, I can move windows to my right screen if they disturb me on my left screen. I defined the left screen to be the `main X server screen.' Therefore, I thought panels would appear on that screen. However, they appear on the right screen. Keyboard layout forces use of Fn function
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hello, I've got an Asus EEE PC 1000 HE which works great for many years. Some months ago, I installed Debian Lenny on it (standard install, nothing special for Asus EEE PC). Not everything worked out of the box, but most did. The EEE PC keyboard worked out of the box. I had to plug an external keyboard today. When I disconnected the keyboard, I realized my (internal) keyboard was not working correctly anymore. The layout seems correct: I'm in AZERTY, Belgium. However, the problem I encounter is that the keys which can be used for a Fn function (there is a Fn key on the keyboard) are always considered as in `Fn mode.' For example, on the `I' key, the Fn function would do `5', and pressing `I' now results always in `5', that is, what the `I' key should do when Fn is pressed. I tried reconfiguring X11, editing my xorg.conf too. How to mount .ccd image under GNOME?

Thanks. - -- Merciadri Luca Hi, if your backup consists in a copy of folders/files from your /home/username and respects the standard hierarchy (backup should contains a username folder with all your files and folder in it), and if the copy method and the filesystem preserved the permissions (and eventually other attributes), you can simply plug the disk in, change the backup drive partition UUID to the one used in the fstab and be done with it. Boot your system in single user or from a live-cd, or any other linux system at hand, plug your external backup drive, read the UUID used for /home in your fstab and apply it to the external drive partition (unmounted): tune2fs -U UUID-from-the-fstab /dev/address-of-backup-drive-partition It works with labels too, use option -L instead of -U. man tune2fs is your friend. Of course you can do it the other way round, change your fstab to the new drive partition UUID or label. If the filesystem is different from the original partition you need to update the fstab accordingly in any case. If you don't use UUID's or labels in fstab, then anything can happen. But you can also run more tests, like disabling your add-ons and plugins (mainly flash player) and check for any improvement once you have turn all them off. Also, ensure you have the latest flash player plugin version installed, now 11.2.202.236. Well, as I said before I just reinstalled the firefox, last version, clean install, having removed .mozilla/* stuff, etc., and I'm still having these issues (no add-on, as I said). Flash is up-to-date. Disable the flash plugin at all (and so the same foe whatever additional version you can have installed, e.g., gnash) and retry. It looks weird seeing Firefox to render slowly a usual page like Youtube, even more with flash player disabled :-? I just tried, using the plug-in menu. This has no influence, and it looks logical as the slowness problem is already encountered on the welcome page, which does not really contain flash stuff (these are just thumbnails)! You can also run the same tests you are doing with Firefox but using a different browser to compare both results. Yes. However, I think my problem is related to something other than Firefox. There's a additional but here and is that as you are using Lenny, I can guess that none of these two could have changed recently so the mistery still remains unless you installed something recently :-) There is something I don't understand in this. Xorg takes way too much CPU cycles, which might be a cause of the slowness I'm currently encountering. However, what is the link with the VGA drivers? I know Xorg is related to the graphical part of the system, but even if Xorg was eating way too much CPU cycles, how damn could it result in such a slowness? I'm having a 4-core config. with thus 4 CPUs at 2.66 Ghz! I just checked the Nvidia website (for my GeForce 8400 GS), and it looks like they have absolutely no driver for me. However, many years ago, I installed a proprietary driver from Nvidia for my graphic card. Together with this driver, I installed nvidia-settings with TwinView. This is the way I'm having a multi-screen configuration. Disable the flash plugin at all (and so the same foe whatever additional version you can have installed, e.g., gnash) and retry. It looks weird seeing Firefox to render slowly a usual page like Youtube, even more with flash player disabled :-? I just tried, using the plug-in menu. This has no influence, and it looks logical as the slowness problem is already encountered

Slowness problem
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I'm using the deprecated Debian Lenny with a 2.6.26-2-686-bigmem kernel on an Asus P5K/EPU motherboard with a 4-cores config. I'm having, already for a long time, slowness issues. It looks like when a task is `too demanding,' everything freezes until this task is completed (that would not be a problem if it was done quickly, but this is however not the case). Take for example www.youtube.com. On the entry page, scrolling say 3 or 4 times the mouse wheel results in such a behaviour: 1) scrolling a little bit in the page, 2) waiting 2 or 3 (!) seconds, then scrolling the rest. That is, scrolling is slow and freezes for 2-3 s after having scrolled a little bit. Then, it scrolls until where it had to stop. My HDD is not full, and I've already cleared all my temporary internet files. It looks like there's some issue with the Firefox-acrobat reader plugin. I noticed this on other computers running Linux and Firefox, even on different distros and acroread versions. I am running Firefox 10.0.1., but have got the same problem on Firefox 10.0. I am running acroread 9.0 but tried with other versions as well. Thanks for any info. My first two questions are: 1) Do you really need Adobe Reader features or will Evince or Okular or similar work for you? Poppler-based PDF readers are really very good nowadays. Generally, another would suffice, yes. 2) Why are you opening in the browser? I have never ever found that to work well, with any combo of OS, browser and PDF reader. I either launch the PDF reader as a separate process from the browser, or save the PDF and then open it. PDF-as-plugin is just plain flaky. Okay. Using the `Dummy mode' of Gnomebaker, I realize that * Choosing `NEC ND-2500A' results in choosing `OPTIARC AD-7203S' (which works), * Choosing `OPTIARC AD-7203S' results in choosing `NEC DV-5800C' (which is not a writer and therefore fails), * It is not possible to write on NEC ND-2500A, * I'm getting an error == Warning: Cannot raise RLIMIT_MEMLOCK limits.scsidev == which seems not to affect any burning. Problem with Totem?
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Howdy, I'm using a MATLAB function which basically outputs the sampling rate, say `fs' (depending on different operations and on Shannon's theorem) and a vector, say `song', which contains notes. `song' can be played at a normal speed using == soundsc(song,fs) == under MATLAB Now, I would like to save it to a wav file, say `mynewsong.wav'. Well, this is not quite difficult: == wavwrite(song/max(song),fs,32,'mynewsong') == under MATLAB where the normalization is done to avoid the saturation of the amplifier. Hopefully they will be able to help you locate the misbehaving GStreamer plugin and get the test data to the correct developer(s). Be sure the test file works correctly in as many free-software players as possible and DOESN'T work in the latest release of Totem. The fact is that I'm using Debian Lenny, and thus $ totem --version GNOME totem 2.22.2 Another problem is that the sound is done for an university project, and I can't share it. Do you know if some modifications were made to Totem, on this particular subject? I might try deforming the sound sufficiently to share it. It may be possible that you discover along the way that Debian is affected because of old versions or packaging bugs or both. If that's the case, fling a bug against the proper Debian package (probably one of the GStream plugins) would be appreciated. I suggest going to upstream with this first because it seems unlikely that the GStreamer packaging process would break totem, but that's just my guess. I have some notes that I took at some point in front of me about making a CD and DVD and before I use them I'd like to ask the list to see if I've got it right. Okay. No problem. To make a *CD* one first needs to create an ISO file. This is done with the genisoimage command. I took a look at the man-page for that and it gives several examples. Which one do I use? Do I need a Vanilla ISO9660 filesystem? Rock Ridge extensions? What's the difference? For a *DVD* the process is a little different. For example: mkiso fs -rJ -i image stuff growisofs -dvd-compact -z /dve/dvd=image You say this just as if it was the only way to write a CD. You're not obliged to burn an .iso image, be it on a CD or a DVD, to write its content to the CD (or DVD). If you want to keep data on a CD/DVD, why would you use an .iso? That's an image-backup extension. If you're using GUIs, I recommend you to switch to GUIs. Actually, I had installed `ntfsprogs' and `dosfstools' without checking that they were actually not ntfs drivers, but mere utilities. I should have realized that I had not the ntfs-3g driver. But why isn't that already installed with a basic install? Thanks again! -- Merciadri Luca See http://www.student.montefiore.ulg.ac.be/~merciadri/ I use PGP. Invalid option when trying to mount the volume
Hi, I've got an USB key whose FS was manually set to NTFS for different reasons. This USB key is correctly recognized under one of my two Debian computers, but this one (laptop) does not like it that much, as plugging it gives me an error `invalid option when trying to mount the volume.' It does not even appear under /media/ (or, maybe, it could be `disk' whose content is empty). How can I create a FAT32 or NTFS FS
Hi, I sometimes use gparted to make a filesystem in an easier way than using CLI. The fact is that gparted appears, to me, as a frontend for CLI commands. I want to format an USB key, and change the filesystem to fat32, or ntfs. It is currently under ext3. I unmount it, delete the FS, and manage to create a new partition. But `fat32' and `ntfs' are impossible choices when creating the new FS. (They are deactivated.) Why? Thanks. -- Merciadri Luca See http://www.student.montefiore.ulg.ac.be/~merciadri/ I use PGP. Since I've installed esound, no more sound from music, videos, etc., but I can now hear system's sounds!
Hi, Some days ago, I figured out (thanks to the ML) how to hear systems' sounds. I had to install esound, and I was using OSS. Now, System Preferences Sounds Sounds tab plays correctly the sounds, but I can't hear any other type of sound (i.e. from music played with totem, VLC, videos on Youtube, etc.). The `Devices' tab gives, for, `Default Mixer Tracks,' `ALSA' as a default. I changed it to OSS, and still no sound from videos (even after GNOME session restart). Should I deinstall esound? What can I do to hear music again? I checked the volume control panel, and everything is okay (no `mute', etc., and volumes are sufficiently high). Thanks all. -- Merciadri Luca See http://www.student.montefiore.ulg.ac.be/~merciadri/ I use PGP. System sounds: what do I need to install?
Hi, Last day, feeling bored, I thought about activating the Debian's Sytem sounds: for logging in, logging out, making a warning message, etc. I found it under System Preferences Sound Sounds tab, I enabled `ESD' and `Play system sounds,' but I can't hear any predefined system sound (there is, facing each system sound type, a «Play» button that I press frenetically).
