[Moritz Mühlenhoff]
 I think debian-edu may still be using it, as it's recommended in
 education-thin-client-server. no idea if it's actually used.

 Debian Edu people, can you comment on this?

We already did. The xfs package is installed for LTSP to use it. If
LTSP use it, it make sense to keep it for Debian Edu. If it does not
(I do not know), then it do not make sense to keep it in Debian Edu.

So the question is not really if LTSP work fine without XFS, but if it
work better without it. Can it handle machines with less memory with
XFS than without it, for example? Anyone know?

Happy hacking,

Using slow, bloated tools like debhelper and dpkg-dev will cost you precious

Adam Borowski kilob...@angband.pl writes:

Looking at the source, I believe that the programming language is not C,
but perl. Even though there's more C in the packaging, the program's
language is perl.

 Using slow, bloated tools like debhelper and dpkg-dev will cost you precious
 SECONDS when building your package. Multiplied by tens of thousands of

While the effort is applaudable, I do not think it goes far enough:
packaging is serious business, complicated, time consuming, and takes a
lot of effort to keep a package well maintained.

As such, I believe it would be a good example to include the Design
Documents in the package aswell, as surely a lot of effort were put into
coming up with these best parctices, showcased under debian/.

Also, I would be interested in seeing either an object-oriented
packaging, or a functional rules file. But that might be out of scope
for this package, so... perhaps a goodbye-for-real example could be
made?

I'm willing to lend a hand in porting your excellent example from a
language invented in the 1970s to one invented in this century: clojure.

Bug#636017: ITP: tran[s[lit]] -- transcribe between character scripts (Cyrillic - Latin, etc)

2011-07-30 Thread Adam Borowski
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Adam Borowski kilob...@angband.pl

* Package name: tran? trans? translit?
  Upstream Author : Adam Borowski kilob...@angband.pl
* URL : https://github.com/kilobyte/tran
* License : GPL
  Programming Lang: Perl
  Description : transcribe between character scripts (Cyrillic - Latin,
etc)

This is a tool for romanization / cyrillization / greekization / etc of text.
It converts character scripts rather than encodings. For example, it can
turn Debian into Дэбян, Δεβιαν.

Currently supported scripts:
* latin
* ascii (ie, dropping accents)
* fullwidth (doublewidth ascii for most of us)
* cyrillic
* greek
* devanagari
* katakana
* hiragana
* hangul
and more are coming. Unicode has for example 13 fancy sets of letters for
mathematical purposes (fraktur, double-strike, etc), this is not supported
yet because a problem in glibc[1], circled/boxed letters, etc. Not to
mention all the remaining scripts in Unicode and ConScript.

It tries to do transcription rather than mere transliteration, but is still
pretty naive and doesn't go far into realms of phonetic accuracy.

I named this project ~six years ago tran which is probably way too
generic. I guess translit might be a bit better.

There is a similar tool in Debian: libtext-unidecode-perl, but it can go
only one way, targets basic ASCII rather than Latin and fails to preserve
non-letter characters like frames.

[1]. towlower(0x1D400) and friends don't work. This needs either to be
fixed in glibc, or be worked around with hand-crafted case conversions.

Sorry for not linking to the .orig tarball (although there's nothing
interesting there). Version 0.2 hushes a lintian --pedantic warning about
no upstream changelog. We can't have such a stellar example clean with
merely the normal options :p

dget http://angband.pl/debian/pool/main/g/goodbye/goodbye_0.2-1.dsc

About suggestions for clojure and brainf*ck: really, I intended to use an
ELF object embedded in debian/rules. The policy says it has to be an
executable makefile, but there is no requirement of it being a text file :p
Zero bytes and newlines would have to be escaped, but that's nothing new,
the tcc version already has to escape the latter.

It would satisfy the policy as long as the source would be present and used
during build -- but no one says we'd need to stay away from Ken Thompson
tricks. There's a bunch of compilers in the archive already which do
require themselves to build.

OK, I bite (although I regret it already…).

In case you really want to upload this to the archive, can you make it
clear in the package description that the packaging practices embodied

No matter how little the risk is, I don't think we want to risk that

Bug#626380: ITP: onioncat -- IP-Transparent Tor Hidden Service Connector

2011-07-30 Thread intrigeri
Here's an update for the record.

I've had upstream stop shipping an obsolete debian/ directory
in the tarballs they release.

I've had upstream fix their build system so that the install make
target works properly when installing into the debian/$(PACKAGE)
destination directory.

Copyright/license are being clarified and sorted out with upstream as
well.

Stay tuned.

Hi,

I don't know if I need to write an ITP for this, but I'll do it to be
sure :-)

The package eep24c is an eeprom programmer, and only works in i386 arch
due to hardware requirements. This package comes with ihex2txt and
txt2ihex that are intelhex file format converters.

Some people need to use an intelhex converter, but are not in i386 arch,
so the converters are not available to them.

I intent to split eep24c package in two packages. eep24c will only
have the programmer itself. intelhex will have the file conversion
tools. intelhex will be in all architectures. eep24 only in i386 (and
amd64).

More details: The eep24c package will recommend intelhex. The licence of
intelhex package will be GPL (the same in eep24c). I'm the upstream
author of eep24c. I intent to do this in the next 10 days.

Thanks,
Pedro

Bug#561963: jenkins for Debian (was: Bug#561963: retitling to RFP)

2011-07-30 Thread martin f krafft
Dear Java team,

we are currently investigating the possibility of using
jenkins.debian.net to support building packages directly out of VCS.

James Page of Canonical has already put a lot of effort into
packaging jenkins in accordance with Debian policy.

Currently he seems to be waiting for some support from the side of
Debian to resolve outstanding issues and sponsor the package upload
into the Debian archive.

I myself have no experience with Java, so I was hoping that by
establishing contact with you, I could get the ball rolling.

Would the pkg-java team be able to cooperate with James to get
jenkins into Debian proper?

Thank you for your consideration!

The majority of the package-set to support Jenkins has now been accepted
into Ubuntu (the last 7 are in the NEW queue for Oneiric ATM). I have
been feeding these back to Debian when I get the time (I have about 19
remaining); Tony Mancill and Damien Raude-Morvan have been reviewing and
sponsoring my packaging as its produced and to-date have outpaced my
ability to submit requests for sponsorship - so as far as I'm concerned
I've got the support I need ATM.

Bug#636070: ITP: dpmaster -- master server (public server list) for Quake-related games

2011-07-30 Thread Simon McVittie
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Simon McVittie s...@debian.org

I'm considering packaging dpmaster, to go with Debian's Quake 1 and Quake 3
engines. I'd maintain this package within the Debian Games Team.

If considered useful, I might also run an instance of it as an unofficial
Debian service (by pointing dpmaster.debian.net at my own server), and
configure Debian's darkplaces and ioquake3 engines to use that service in
parallel with the upstream-recommended defaults (they can use any number
of master servers, and will take the union of the results).

* Package name: dpmaster
  Version : 2.2
  Upstream Author : Mathieu Olivier molivier, at users.sourceforge.net
* URL : http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/
* License : GPL-2+
  Programming Lang: C (+ Perl for the regression tests)
  Description : master server (public server list) for Quake-related games

Quake III Arena, and many similar games, discover public servers by sending
a query to one or more master servers, which lists all servers that have been
configured to send a heartbeat to that same master server.

dpmaster is a lightweight master server implementation, written from scratch
for DarkPlaces. It uses an open protocol based on the one from Quake III
Arena, in which new games can advertise themselves on an existing master
server without changes to the master server.

Games natively supporting the DarkPlaces master server protocol include those
derived from DarkPlaces (including Nexuiz, Xonotic and Transfusion), QFusion
(including Warsow), FTE QuakeWorld, and recent versions of ioQuake3.

In addition to its own protocol, dpmaster also supports the master protocols
used by Quake III Arena, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and Wolfenstein:
Enemy Territory. Standalone games using the Quake III Arena engine, such as
OpenArena, World of Padman, Smokin' Guns and Urban Terror, are also supported.

Description: MS-Word to TeX or plain text converter
 This program extracts text from MS-Word files, trying to preserve
 as many special printable characters as possible. catdoc supports
 everything up to Word-97. Also supported are MS Write documents and RTF
 files.
 .
 It doesn't even try to preserve fancy Word formatting, because
 Word users usually don't care about document structure, and it is
 this very thing which is important to LaTeX users.
 .
 Also provided is xls2csv, which extracts data from Excel spreadsheets
 and outputs it in comma-separated-value format and catppt, which extracts
 data from PowerPoint presentations.
 .
 This package suggests tk because it also includes wordview, an
 optional Tk-based GUI for catdoc. The MIME config provided in this
 package will use wordview is X is running, or catdoc directly if it
 is not.

handle tens of thousands of connections efficiently on multicore

stud has very few features. It is designed to be paired with an
intelligent backend like haproxy or nginx. It maintains a strict 1:1
connection pattern with this backend handler so that the backend can
dictate throttling behavior, maxmium connection behavior, availability

Bug#636072: ITP: stud -- scalable TLS unwrapping daemon

2011-07-30 Thread Peter Samuelson

[Vincent Bernat]
 stud is a network proxy that terminates TLS/SSL connections and
 forwards the unencrypted traffic to some backend. It is designed to
 handle tens of thousands of connections efficiently on multicore
 machines.

You should include some text to differentiate this from stunnel4. From
the ITP, I cannot figure out why I would want this instead, or indeed,
why Debian should ship both.

Bug#561963: jenkins for Debian (was: Bug#561963: retitling to RFP)

 we are currently investigating the possibility of using

[...]
 Would the pkg-java team be able to cooperate with James to get
 jenkins into Debian proper?

Sponsoring and reviewing effort is already underway. AFAIK, many packages have
been sponsored by me and Tony Mancil.

IIRC, all submitted RFS have been uploaded, but many packages are still
missing :

James, could you provide a (link ?) to updated status of your packaging effort
? And is there something we (Debian Java Team) could do to help you ?

ok, we made some good and some not so good jokes, what you actually want
to package but we could not figure out for sure. So, tell us:

* what exactly do you want to package?
* How can something be an implementation of something in no programming

The main difference is that stud handles tens of thousands of
connections efficiently on multicore machines. stunnel is not able to
get similar performance due to its threaded model. Moreover, stud is
really small (ten times smaller than stunnel) which may be important
From a security point of view.

I hope to backup those claims with some figures soon.

I want to package a file containig the mantra. Nothing more, but also
nothing less.

* How can something be an implementation of something in no programming

implenting in this case means putting this file on a _spinning_ disk.

* why is it public-domain (note, public domain is perhaps not what you
think it would: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_domain)

So actually you are right, so i would go for CC-by-SA.

* Also, some things on the home page you linked claims wheel image on
this page have authorized it's use for any respectful purpose which is
not DFSG free (No Discrimination Against Fields of Endeavor).

Well, I am not going to package the image file from the web page, only
the mantra itself stored as a text file.

Kind regards, Simon

Bug#636089: ITP: swe-data -- Swiss Ephemeris Data

2011-07-30 Thread Paul Elliott
Package: WNPP
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: swe-data
  Version : 1.77.00
  Upstream Author : Dieter Koch and Alois Treindl
* URL : http://www.astro.com/swisseph/
* License : GPL2+
  Programming Lang: C
  Description : The SWISS EPHEMERIS is the high precision ephemeris
developed by Astrodienst, largely based upon the DE406 ephemeris from
NASA's JPL.

The Swiss Ephemeris Data is the data necessary to use the SWISS EPHEMERIS.
It consists of 36 Meg in 54 seperate files. Any particular file
could be needed or not needed depending on what the user is doing.
For more infomation on the Swiss Ephemeris data, see:
http://www.astro.com/swisseph/swisseph.htm

The Swiss Ephemeris offers these advantages:

The Swiss Ephemeris is based upon the latest planetary and lunar
ephemeris, DE405/406, developed by NASA's Jet Propulsion
Laboratory. The original integration, DE405, covered the years 3000 BC
to 3000 AD and required 550 Mb of disk space. DE406 is a compressed
version of DE405 which requires 200 MB while maintaining a precision
of better than 1 m for the moon and 25 m for the planets. These data
have been further compressed with sophisticated compression techniques
developed by Astrodienst. The ephemeris now requires for the complete
6000 years only 5 Mb for all planets except the Moon, and 13 Mb for
the Moon. This compressed ephemeris reproduces the JPL data with 0.001
arcseconds precision.

We have extended the timespan of the JPL ephemeris by numerical
integration, so that Swiss Ephemeris covers the years 5400 BC to 5400
AD, a total of 10'800 years. For this extended timespan the ephemeris
requires 32 Mbytes of ephemeris files.

All transformation steps from the inertial timeframe of the JPL DE406
integration to the reference frame for astrological coordinates (true
equinox of date), all corrections like relativistic aberration,
deflection of light in the gravity field of the Sun etc. have been
performed with utmost care and precision so that the target precision
of 0.001 arcsec is maintained through all transformation steps. Never
before has such a high precision ephemeris been available to
astrologers.

Swiss Ephemeris contains three ephemerides. The user can choose
whether he/she wants to use the original JPL DE406 data (if available
at his/her site), the compressed Swiss Ephemeris data (the default) or
a built in semianalytic theory by Steve Moshier. The Swiss Ephemeris
package switches automatically to the available best precision
ephemeris dependent on which installed ephemeris files it finds. Even
without any stored ephemeris files, using the Moshier model, planetary
positions with better than 0.1 seconds of arc precision are available
(3 arcsec for the Moon).

In addition to the astronomical planets as contained in the JPL
integration, we have included all other bodies and hypothetical
factors which are of interest to the astrologer. We have used our own
numerical integration program to provide ephemerides for ALL known
asteroids. There are over 55'000 of them and nobody will be able to
use them all. We distribute these extended asteroid files via our
download area; there are also CDROMs available with large sets of
asteroid files.

Asteroid reaserachers may be interested in a December 1998 article in
the Economist magazine about the naming of asteroids.

Speed: The Swiss Ephemeris is precise and fast. On our Linux test
machine, a 1000 MHz Pentium III, we compute 10'000 complete sets of
planetary positions, i.e. 10'000 x 11 planets, in 9 seconds. This is
0.9 milliseconds for the complete set of exact planetary positions
(consecutive 1 day steps).

Bug#636094: RFP: python-pysvg -- Creating SVG with Python

2011-07-30 Thread Carlo Stemberger
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: python-pysvg
  Version : 0.2.1
  Upstream Author : Kerim Mansour info AT codeboje DOT de
* URL : http://codeboje.de/pysvg/
* License : BSD
  Programming Lang: Python
  Description : Creating SVG with Python

pySVG is a pure Python library to create SVG documents. Essentially it
is a python wrapper around svg with the goal to allow people to program
svg. pySVG can be used to produce svg as an outcome of algorithms you
implement (like koch curves, Lindenmayr systems etc.)

Working with pySVG is pretty straightforward. There is a small tutorial
in the docs folder but i would suggest refering to the testclasses in
the source.

Current status:
Pretty much all elements should be implemented. Type checking,
validation and value constraints are NOT. In short: currently you can
fill any element with more or less any content. Loading and storing of
SVG images also works.

Features:
* Shapes (circle, ellipses, rectangles, lines, polygons, polylines,paths)
* Text
* Containers (g-element, defs)
* Style attributes (stroke, filling, font)
* Transform (in groups)
* Filters
* Load/Store SVG files
