Addition to mailing list code of conduct as discussed on debian-user?

2007-05-20 Thread Andrew M.A. Cater
[I suggested the following: somebody else thought it a good idea - Andy]
Agreed. It may be a good idea to add to the mailing lists code of
conduct a couple of extra lines:

---

A lot of questions asked on debian-user and debian-devel are asked
regularly. Please consider searching using an Internet search engine
and reading the mailing list archives, Debian install notes and Debian
reference manual before you post. If you can't find the answer, it is
very helpful to others to show that you have attempted at least some of
the above and your degree of success.

If you have a problem, please be prepared to give hardware/installed
software and version information if requested to as part of the process
of problem resolution.

Politeness and precision in use of language both help to narrow down
issues and constrain extraneous discussions and flame wars. If tempted
to start or continue contentions threads, please consider moving these
to private email or to debian-curiosa. Both debian-user and debian-devel
are high-volume lists read by people worldwide: consideration should be
given to the fact that the views and attitudes of others may differ from
your own.

This list is primarily used for the people who run Debian's web presence. Your
question might be better asked on the debian-user list.

It will depend on the processor used in the laptop: Intel/AMD compatibility
now requires better than a Pentium class processor. [Coincidentally, there
is a thread over on Linux Weekly News (lwn.net) about precisely this topic at
the moment.

It will also depend very much on how much memory your laptop supports. In
general, using older Debian versions that are now out of support is not
recommended.

Unfortunately, no. We don't normally remove bug reports until they are dealt
with. In general, there is no way to remove email from Debian lists - they
are archived and mirrored in various places on the 'Net - Google will
probably cache them somewhere. In general - once any data is out there on the
Internet, it cannot reliably be deleted.

A larger problem is that raising the issue draws wider attention to it. This
is sometimes called the "Streisand effect" see also

URLchecker fixes for the partners pages

2021-02-08 Thread Andrew M.A. Cater
Folks,

There are a whole lot of pages which fail the URLchecker for https or because
companies etc. have moved.

A lot of these are common - looking at, for example,
https://www.master.debian.org/build-logs/urlcheck/partners.en - there's
a lot of entries which would be fixed by single edits.

This _shouldn't_ have effects on translated pages - would anybody object
if I started the process of clearing the errors - to include the pages
identified by year?

There's also the point that a lot of CD and image mirrors have also
disappeared over the years and could do with tidying up.

All advice gratefully received

Using urlcheck - how many broken links should we accept?

2021-03-11 Thread Andrew M.A. Cater
Folks,

Looking at the output of urlcheck:

There are lots of websites that return error codes. There are still lots
where an http -> https substitution would solve a missing website.

There are lots of apparent errors where, in fact, it's just a directory level
move - https://www-master.debian.org/build-logs/urlcheck/MailingLists

How much breakage should we accept for old sites / sites that have been
renamed or simply no longer exist?

For, for example, DPL nominations on debian-vote which list resume information
/ university "stuff" - is it worth going to fix old links?

I'm very wary of global search and replace through all of the webwml. How
much checking should we devote to seeing whether websites exist or still
resolve?

All opinions gratefully received.

All the very best, as ever,

Andy C.

You can run either Debian 32 bit armhf software or arm64 64 bit software.
In practice, you'd probably run 64 bit software on a 64 bit processor on
Pi4b.

With some difficulty: in effect, it would be easier to limit everything to
32 bits which is the common factor for all. Pi Zero won't run 64 bits. Some
Pi2 and all Pi3 and above will run 64 bits quite happily. Hardware for
early Pis is _NOT_ compatible with the Debian armhf archive: Raspbian had
to be rebuilt.

You can but it would be so slow as to be unusable. Debian builds the same
software for arm64 and amd64 (with a few small exceptions) so you could
run exactly the same software on both systems. Emulation always imposes a
performance penalty - for a Pi 4b, this might be extreme.

Not straightforwardly: kvm/qemu can be used to emulate ARM systems on more
powerful AMD64 systems.

You can get Windows for ARM from Microsoft: it has been made to run on a
Raspberry Pi. Again, emulation is not really feasible and the two versions
of Windows cannot run each others programs.

deb.debian.org will pick up the CDN which doesn't really care where you are
and will "just redirect" to get you your packages.

security.debian.org is the canonical name for the security mirror.

It doesn't really matter - the errata message points up the change in

Like this, you mean -
https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current/amd64/bt-cd/debian-11.1.0-amd64-netinst.iso.torrent

I suspect that the torrent feeds for larger images were removed because

I was mistaken - I didn't look hard enough. It appears that there is a torrent
for the netinst CD and also for DVD1 for all appropriate architectures. Also
a torrent for the unofficial images which include firmware.

That accords well with the images the media team put out, I think. Jigdo

Unfortunately, it's the French translators who have to try and keep

Separately, the team preparing the live CD images is the one to contact

There is a prominent link for "other downloads", that will take

Debian-www is the lsit for the Debian web pages and webmasters. Insofar
as I'm aware, your data is not held on our website. You have, however,
now recorded your data in our mailing lists.

May I refer you to part of the FAQ from the Debian user mailing list:

* One question that comes up on almost all Debian lists from time to time is
  of the form:

"I have done something wrong / included personal details in an email.
Could you please delete my name / details / remove the mail"

Practically, this is impossible: the mailing lists are archived, potentially
cached by Google and so on. Unfortunately, there is nothing much we can do to
ensure that all copies anywhere on the Internet are deleted. Asking to do this
may only serve to draw further attention - the so-called "Streisand effect"

Hi Kris,

This is a user-level query - maybe follow up to the debian-user mailing list
rather than to debian-project which can potentially go to a much wider
audience?

I'm having difficulty finding that one - RTL are normally Realtek drivers
I think, and those are generally either WiFi (most common) or Ethernet
drives. It's quite common for an Ethernet chipset to "just work" on hte
generic drivers and not to require a specific Realtek driver.

If you are on Debian 11 - you might want to look at what non-free drivers
you are including and perhaps install firmware-realtek (but see below).

If it's all working - don't worry. If you could check the exact error
message, that might help us narrow it down a litte further.

Unfortunately, debian-www is probably the wrong mailing list to ask this.
You may get better results by asking on the debian-user list.

You have a fairly new machine: it would be better to use Debian 11 -
Debian 10 is slightly older and the newer kernel version in 11 may
support your hardware better.

I would suggest that you use the unofficial non-free .iso image as this
will include the firmware that you may need. Since you have an Nvidia
card, I would also suggest that you install in text mode and install
the packages to set up the Nvidia card _before_ installing a full
desktop environment if you want to use the non-free proprietary Nvidia
drivers. The nouveau free software driver may work well for you.

We are based around two osteopathic centres. We have two Debian servers and 25
workstations.

We have chosen Debian for it's stability, security and ease of maintenance. We
love Debian because it is entirely free and libre, in comparison with other
distributions based on Debian. Thanks to all the Debian developers !

Hi Prasanna,

Unfortunately, we almost certainly hold no personal data on you.
If you read the Debian mailing list guidelines at
https://www.debian.org/MailingLists/ and the Debian mailing list
code of conduct on the same page and especially
https://www.debian.org/MailingLists/disclaimer you will find that
Debian mailing lists are public.

We have no control over archives held elsewhere on the Internet by
Google or any other services: once things are out on the Internet
they are out there forever.

By raising this, then you have potentially raised your profile on
any given search engine - see also this useful Wikipedia article.

Hi,

There is no .iso downlink specifically for KDE. Debian provides a netinst
iso that will allow you to install any of several desktop environments.

https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/current/amd64/iso-cd/firmware-11.4.0-amd64-netinst.iso

If you download the DVD .iso file, then this will also allow you to do
the same but there will be more on the initial file, so maybe a smaller
download from the network if there are bandwidth issues but at the cost
of a larger initial download.

https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/current/amd64/iso-dvd/firmware-11.4.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso

When the installer goes through to the tasksel step of selecting package
groups to install, uncheck GNOME and check KDE.

>

As above: this is unlike Kubuntu, for example: Canonical issue separate
.iso files per desktop.

An alternative is to use the debian-live images: these are significantly
larger than the netinst but come with an installed desktop.

https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/current-live/amd64/iso-hybrid/debian-live-11.4.0-amd64-kde+nonfree.iso

I have specifically included the images which include non-free firmware in
them as this may work more easily with more modern laptops for a first
install. The firmware is not free software: we can distribute it but we
can only give you what the vendors provide and non-free software is not
part of the main Debian distribution.

You may find it easier to ask further questions on the debian-user mailing list.

With every good wish, as ever,

Andy Cater

Hi Alex,

Thanks for that - calling people stupid isn't useful. Changed to point out
that anyone, no matter how capable, can make mistakes.

Hi Sergey,

If you want the logo - the red swirl: https://www.debian.org/logos/

Almost all Debian lists are primarily in the English language.

There is a .ua user list at https://lists.debian.org/debian-user-ukrainian

Hi,

This is a question that would be better asked on the debian-user mailing list.

Have you added non-free-firmware to the /etc/apt/sources.list lines?

Bug#1037316: www.debian.org: Download links on www.debian.org after release = no iso images, only BT

2023-06-11 Thread Andrew M.A. Cater
Package: www.debian.org
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

Following Bookworm release and new layout: download links missing on
www.debian.org for live CDs and some other images. Only BT links are there.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

Followed download link on front page

   * What was the outcome of this action?

Redirect to appropriate page but links missing.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

Download links to full CD/DVD/debian-live DVD images

https://www.debian.org/download links to https://www.debian.org/distrib/

This page is missing links to larger images like DVD and the only links
are the links to torrents.

Debian Live links are also only torrents

https://www.debian.org/CD/ still has suggestions for 11.7

https://www.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/ then needs rewrite

Most of these are in progress somewhere, I know, and stuff is busy, busy

Thanks, Andy
