It's not listed because of a pattern in .transignore.
I've fixed the pattern, so hopefully the

There was a problem with the dblatex toolchain at some time, and Norbert
Preining provided us a patch as solution/workaround.
With this patch the fonts were switched to these CharisSIL fonts.
Or with other words, we used other fonts by default before.

I think it was our intention to build release-notes while a suite is

Yes, there were languages, that could only be handled by xmlroff, not by
dblatex, at that time. Maybe DISABLED_PDF has been introduced when
xmlroff was removed from Debian.

Even for the website we generate all the formats, including PDF.

However, I think that all the languages are handled by dblatex now, and
no xmlroff is needed.

So the remaining issue is not with xmlroff anymore, but with the

To add more info on my standpoint on this - I simply find it weird that
something under News/ doesn't get listed as untranslated, while
recently there was stuff about Hurd that did. (Which to me seems WAY
less interesting for the standard user).

The fact is that for other languages (de, pt, fr) the same file seems
to be OK. Is it just the Spanish one (es) that fails? :-?

I'm still unable to see what's the problem here. If there is somethng
wrong in scripts code, other templates will fail the same way but that's not
the case.

Well, I'm CC'ing the package maintainer and wait until it gets
uploaded.

Thanks Holger, for the input!

"Find someone, who is able to improve the code of the scripts, so they

There is nothing you can do otherwise IMHO.

As stated earlier, I do care (a lot) about this page and I do i18n

I totally agree, that I'm doing much less in this regard than bubulle,

It would be great if this page could be kept, because it guides me

IIRC this page was unknown to several contributors on this list until
I recently mentioned it. So I doubt that this single page is the
source of confusion.

And thanks for keeping the infrastructure up and running, despite all
these difficulties (strange tool chain, script written by others,
broken po(t) files and difficult handling by other Debian
contributors).

The feeding of the robot is not useless; the information is processed and
shown on the robot status pages.

I beg to differ.

These pages (not just for «es» but other languages)

https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po-debconf/es

Need to reflect the CURRENT and REAL status of PO files when a translator
interacts with the robot.

So, for multispeech file, the one I'm complaining about, this must
reflect a grey table row color and:

---
multispeech 0% (0t;0f;16u)  bts Camaleón
2024-07-21 06:36:01 1076657
---

But currently it is displayed as «Hey, no one is in care of this file,
is not translated... you can go ahead and translate it into Spansish»
which, being this page the main source for translator's coordination,
I guess is not the desired/expected message :-/

I mean, I see no difference between multispeech and evqueue-core, for
instance. The former is WRONGLY displayed, while the latter is RIGHT.

Why?

OTOH, the multispeech Spanish translated file should be -by now-
uploaded into unstable, as the rest of the languages which are already there:

https://i18n.debian.org/material/po/unstable/main/m/multispeech/debian/po/

Finally, (I don't think so but) if NOW it is unnecessary/useless sending
commands to the robot to set the status of po-debconf PO files, just
tell and I will stop doing so.

Instructing the robot about the status of files takes MUCH valuable time
for translators who could be spent in performing another tasks.

Of course, feel free to correct/instruct me for everything I take it
wrong. Your valuable advice is always welcome :-)

Cheers,

I think, what you are proposing above is a huge task.

I'm personally lacking the perl skills for such changings, but I can share
some knowledge (please ignore, if you are aware of all this):

On i18n.debian.org, there is a cron job running every second day,
that searchs for po files (translation files) in all the packages in
the Debian archive (separately for unstable and testing).

This is a massive job, and it has to deal with many errors in pacakges,
where the filenames/formats/etc. are not conform with how it's expected by
the cron job script.
So, the output of this cron job is full of errors/warnings/whatever about
errors, whose reason is not in the i18n server or the cron job, but in the
packages.
But apparently there are different assumptions how to deal with translation
files etc...

Anyway, the result of this cron job are two big compressed text files,
testing.gz and unstable.gz in https://i18n.debian.org/material/data/

They contain a dump of which translation for which language in which
package exists, with its translation status (how many % of the file is
translated).

These files are the basis for some perl scripts, which are run during
webwml cron job for building the website, including the l10n statistics
we are talking about here (the unstable.gz is used here).
The output of that webwml build run - the l10n statistics pages - are
generally (looking at a page for a specific language like Spanish) pages
with one line per package, for all packages in which a po file for Spanish
is found (that's the "Packages with po-debconf support and for which
translation is underway" section of the page).
That line shows the current translation status of the file - in the
package - in unstable!!!

The package "multispeech" - which Camaleón complained about in his latest
mail - does not have a es.po file in the package in unstable.
So, there is no such line showing anything regarding this file on the
page for Spanish.

This is a special case, because multispeech is a very new package, which
has just been added to Debian shortly, and therefore it does not have
translations for many languages. And therefore it does not have a
translation for Spanish currently.
And so you don't have an entry in this "Packages with po-debconf support
and for which translation is underway" section.

BUT: there is an entry for multispeech in the section "Packages with po-debconf
support and for which translation is to do".
And the translator (Camaleón) has acted on this, he translated the file,
a bugreport is filed, everything fine.
As soon as the package maintainer includes this file into the package and
uploads the package with a new version number into the Debian archive,
multispeech
should show up on the l10n statistics page (as "100% translated" ideally),
and that's it.

Please note, that the functionality I described above is the basic way of
how it works, as the page has developed originally!

Some time later, some data has been added to the page, and that's all the
data from the l10n robots which acts on the pseudo-URLs, that translators
sent to their debian-l10n-LANG mailinglists to coordinate translations
inside the teams (like
https://l10n.debian.org/coordination/spanish/es.by_translator.html).
This is an additional data source, which was injected into Debian's
l10n statistics pages at
https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po-debconf/es.

This addition has added some more columns to the page:
Status, Translator, Date, Bug

But these information can only be shown, when a po file for the package
(here: multispeech) exists in the package in unstable !!!
Otherwise: no file -> no line with information shown. See above.

Long story short:
the repeating complaining about "Translation status page not updated (again)"
and similar may look as an issue at the first glance, but as far as I can see,
there is no problem currently.
It's just that the system is working diffently compared to how people think
it does.

There is room for optimization probably, but the status quo is working as
intended.

If some changes are planned:
maybe we should revert the changings, that the status data from robot
(https://l10n.debian.org/coordination/spanish/es.by_translator.html)
are integrated into the centralized l10n statistics page
(https://www.debi

Hi Camaleón,

thanks for the info. I guess that www.d.o is using a total different
code for generating the statistics. Not sure which data sources are
used by those three pages if the sources are the same or different.

I would like to see most translation statistic to be on l10n.d.o or
i18n.d.o but not on www.d.o any more. Not now, but in the long run
(0.5-2 years maybe). Therefore it would be nice to get the feedback
which statistics are only available on www.d.o and which data is
already available on other domains, so they may be removed from
www.d.o.

Hello

I got no replies about it and sadly I'm afk until August.

If anybody has a clear opinion about how to proceed, please go ahead. If not,
I'll try to make a decision around the first week of August.

Sadly (?), we have no outdated translation as of now. In fact
https://www.debian.org/devel/website/stats/it does not show any pending
translation.

I'll test it later on.

The cron job runs on www-master. The crontab entry is available, but
I cannot see the the cron job itself is really running.

I just manually started the daily check for italian. Maybe you got an email now.

I did not find any problem on the file and it works when run on my machine. I
supposed the crontab is deactivated somewhere else.

On what machine does it run?

Thank you,

I have checked that the cron jobs for check_trans.pl in www-master are
still scheduled.

I have run it manually (the "daily" version) and found several
errors/warnings:

---

count_changes() ERROR: commit rev2 HEAD not found in revisions of
english/ (wml files in english folder)

Use of uninitialized value $delta in numeric ge (>=) at
./check_trans.pl line 401.

syntax error at ./chinese/international/chinese/translator.db.pl line

Compilation failed in require at ./check_trans.pl line 1024.

Undefined subroutine &main::croak called at ./check_trans.pl line 1238.
Can't use an undefined value as a HASH reference at
/srv/www.debian.org/webwml/Perl/Local/VCS_git.pm line 559.

---

but the script goes on and seems to finish without any more errors.

I'll try to fix these errors (not sure if they are the cause of the
issues).

I have reduced the errors of the check_trans.pl script to:

Can't use an undefined value as a HASH reference at
/srv/www.debian.org/webwml/Perl/Local/VCS_git.pm line 559.

This indeed seems to be the cause of the script not sending mails; I
have run in www-master a manual check for Spanish with -g option (that
would output the mails to the screen instead of sending them) and after
the error no output is shown, but if I add a -s subfolder option I have
tried with several subfolders and mails would be sent, except for the
"devel" folder. I have narrowed the issue to the /devel/website/stats
folder, adding it to the global .transignore file avoids the error so
the script can continue (at least for Spanish) until the step of sending
mails.

I guess the issue was introduced around mid-November when the generation
of those pages (website stats) was changed/simplified, and the
check_trans.pl script tries to get the diff of the VCS revisions and
fails because those files have no commit history.

I am not sure about the best way of solving this, several options come
to mind:

1.- Ideally we should update /Perl/Local/VCS_git.pm line 559 and
sorroundings adding code to avoid the use of undefined value, but that
Perl Module is used in a lot of other places/scripts and I'm not a Perl
expert so I fear to break other things. CC'ing Steve McIntyre because he
did the invaluable task of porting that code in the CVS->git migration
for the case he can help (but first look at the other options I see,
maybe they are better than this).

2.- Adding some more code to the check_trans.pl file around Line 184:

    # Global .transignore
    my $transignore = Webwml::TransIgnore->new($VCS->get_topdir());

to add "/devel/website/stats" to the list of the $transignore variable
(in addition to what it gets from the global .transignore file in webwml
top folder).

I don't know how to do this either, but if nobody steps ahead and this
is the preferred solution, I can try to figure out :-)

3.- Just add /devel/website/stats to the global webwml/.transignore file
so it's taken into account by the script (as I have done temporarily in
www-master to do the tests (changes undone)). I don't know what it would
mean for the rest of translation scripts (I guess it should be safe
because the files under /devel/website/stats are generated and
translation of those strings depends on the stats.$ll.po files and those
files are in $ll/po folder so their status is taken into account. But
CC'ing Thomas Lange who did the last important research on the
transignore files for the case he can help).

4.- Any other?

If there is not resolution of this issue in several days, I will open a
bug report with the status quo so it does not get forgotten.

Kind regards

I have reviewed my mail and IRC logs to know if something happened

find anything.

Been seeing the same on and off recently, including from a couple hours ago to

Similarly, packages site requests that are served by www.debian.org

Out of curiosity in response to various DPL inquiries about "how can I help
Debian?", I've reviewed a bit the various pieces of documentation on the
subject and compared it with what other distros do. A remarkable difference
seems to be a "per-profile" organization of the available material,
i.e. organizing the "how to contribute" page with a top-level distinction
among, say: developers, translators, bug triager, artists, donors, etc.

I believe there is some value in such a distinction, simply because the users
interested into helping out usually knows pretty well what they are able and
willing to do. I hence suggest to reorganize the content of
http://www.debian.org/intro/help according to the various profiles.

Just for reference, here a few links to what others (random sampling, not
necessarily representative) have been doing in that respect:

So, why was that page removed then?
Or at least add a link pointing to above archive URL?
Editing the page like this is not professional (mentioning a page,
which is not there anymore).
Buster is still under LTS support, so not archived strictly.

Yes, it's correct that this link is not working any more. You can find

These sources are the original ones, managed by the security team.
If there's some error in it, they can fix it.
You can file a bug report or send the security team an email about

Hi,

DSA-5248-1 is about php-twig - security update. This is correct in the
security tracker https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/DSA-5248-1

Unfortunally the email that was send about this security fix
https://lists.debian.org/debian-security-announce/2022/msg00217.html
had the wrong DSA number in the subject line and the mail itself.

In our web pages, we can fix this, so the security entry links to the
right email. This means www.debian.org/security/DSA-5248-1 will link
to the correct email, but this email includes a wrong DSA number.
Sorry for this confusion, but we cannot change the email afterwards.

Here's the file of rewrites/fixes we use to link to the correct emails:

So I want to make this idea forward, but not familiar way
to do it.

First, to raise an attention to the team, I've filed as a bug

Then I've seen https://wiki.debian.org/Teams/ListMaster, so

As far as I know, content of repository is not public so
the only way to do is asking the team members to update ones, doesn't it?

If I'm not wrong the current build errors come from these lines in
Makefile.common:

151 ifneq "$(LANGUAGE)" "en"
152 #Ensure that MO files do exist
153 #Translators have to run make under webwml//po if they
154 #want it updated, it cannot be automatically performed.
155 $(LOCALEDESTFILES): $(LOCALEDIR)/%.mo: $(WMLBASE)/po/%.$(LANGUAGE).po
156 $(MAKE) -C $(WMLBASE)/po install-$*.mo

I wonder if this really because of a change in releases/
It looks more like the build in l10n/po fails.

Errors building /releases/buster folder in several languages (Re: webwml failed)

2024-04-30 Thread Laura Arjona Reina

Hello

We are receiving build errors in the /releases/buster folder for several
languages (see log below).

That folder has been removed in the git repo, but in www-master machine
it is still there for several languages, due to the existence of .forced
files (these are created sometimes by the touch_translation.pl script, I
didn't look at the details) or the existence of an empty
debian-installer subfolder.

I have logged in www-master and I am manually deleting those
files/folders so the /releases/ folder for the language matches the
structure of the git repo, and "make" only tries to build what it's
really needed.

I don't know if there is another solution that does not involve manually
deleting files in www-master, to be taken into account for the future.

Kind regards

This is done now.
debian-policy on debian.org/doc is fine as it is now.

See commits 3462a061, a2262ec9 and ae8aa074 on
https://salsa.debian.org/webmaster-team/cron/-/commits/master/parts/7doc?ref_type=heads

So, we know now what is needed, to get it this far (aka: get the search
function working and make the html theme work on big (desktop pcs) and
small (smartphone) screens:

We need javascript functionality from the packages libjs-sphinxdoc and
libjs-jquery. Without these, the above funtions will not work.
I brought it this far, to make sure of this fact.

I will close this bug now.

Whether javascript will stay active on debian.org website will need to be
decided. I will follow up regarding this topic on
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=872944

Thanks to Stéphane Blondon, we have a nice Debian theme for Sphinx now, and
I managed to get it to the website in the end so far, currently visible at
debian-policy:
https://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/index.html

I had to deal with some missing javascript files as well, to make the
sidebar appear/disappear on small screens like smartphones, but that works
now.

The only thing which is not working currently, is the search functionality,
but since that's not theme-specific I guess (please correct me, if I'm
wrong), I close this bug.

Javascript leaves some open issues, but for those I will follow-up on some
existing javascript bugs, we already have for the website/manuals.

Since there were no objections, I pushed that yesterday (+ one additional

Hi Holger,

even if things get more complex, this is a working solution. I'm very
happy for that and there's no need for spending more time into looking
for a perfect solution.

Re: Translation of DSA

2024-04-01 Thread Thomas Lange
Hi Giuseppe,

the DSA are untranslatable on our web page, yes. We did that on
purpose. First, these announcements are very technical information,
not intended for end users. End users just want to upgrade their
system and know if all packages are up to date. That's why we think
most people that are interested in these security information
understand english. Second, there are automatic translation services, that can
easily translate those pages.

Adding PO support may be possible (you have to change the perl
script), but I will not spend time into it, because IMO there are
more important parts on the web page I like to improve.

Hi,

It seems that some of category in lists.debian.org

I've filed as a bug [1] especially the following 2 cases.

* Case 1) "Users" category is too comprehensive, let's split it.
* Case 2) "Developers" category is too comprehensive, let's split it.

[1] https://bugs.debian.org/1065647

Case 1) "Users" category is too comprehensive, let's split it.

Split Users into "Users" and "Local Community and Users".
Merit of this one is making it easy to distinct local/regional community.

  Before:

* Users (English)
 * debian-announce
 * debian-backports
 ...
 * debian-user
 ...
 * debian-chinese
 * debian-chinese-big5
 * debian-chinese-gb
 * debian-esperanto
 ...

   After:

* Users (English)
 * debian-announce
 * debian-backports
 ...
 * debian-user
 ...

* Local Community and Users

 * debian-chinese
 * debian-chinese-big5
 * debian-chinese-gb
 * debian-esperanto
 * debian-french
 * debian-italian
 * debian-japanese
 * debian-user-catalan
 * debian-user-danish
 ...

Case 2) Developers category is too comprehensive, let's split it.

Extract some mailing-list into new "Maintenance of Programming
Languages" from Developers category.

   Before:

* Developers

 * debian-academy
 ...

   After:

* Developers

 * debian-academy
 ...

* Maintenance of Programming Languages

 * debian-ada
 * debian-clojure
 * debian-common-lisp
 * debian-go
 * debian-haskell
 * debian-js
 * debian-ocaml-maint
 * debian-perl
 * debian-python
 * debian-r
 * debian-ruby
 * debian-rust
 * debian-scheme

Any thought?

Dear Holger,

Thanks for work on that ticket.

But this does not solve the problem that this language links are
missing.

Having this links directly in the footer of such pages would increase
the usability.

Kind,

I seems it has been forgotten to remove the reference for legal.pot from
./english/po/Makefile.
Doing that, lead to similar errors for other files, that have also been
removed shortly:
./english/security/dsa.rdf.in
./english/security/make-ref-table.pl
./english/security/index.include
