FWIW, I found a workaround for the problem I reported, working for
applications using the SDL library (this includes both mjpeg tools and VLC,
can't say for other video apps).
From the SDL FAQ on their website (www.libsdl.org) :
Q: How do I disable XFree86 XVideo acceleration?

i just installed debian woody 3 and encountered the following
error:
after installing and logging in, i type din startx to start kde.
but instead of Opening kde, the following error message
occured:
xray :/home/sunshine#startx
(comment: 2 times) xauth: creating new authority file
I think i have to add that i tried it by installing
debian from ftp.us.debian.org and also by download install via
ftp.dk.debian.org.
the downloading worked pretty fine, everything else to.
only the error occured when i typed in startx
i would be kind of happy if there would be
a reply at all..

If you wait until X has finished initializing before switching
to a VC, do you run into the same problem?
Is there a version of the package about which you know that
it does _not_ suffer from this problem?
