The bug seems to happen inside the dh_purge statement. Here are the last
three lines I get after modifying the postrm script to set -x:
+ read -r _db_internal_line
+ RET='20 Unsupported command removing (full line was Removing any
system startup links for /etc/init.d/xserver-xorg ...) received
Redirecting the output of update-rc.d to standard error fixes the
problem. At least for me.

I don't have Debian on this computer, but I'd like to note that on
Ubuntu, I only need to downgrade xserver-xorg-core to get my
dual-head/xinerama working again. It's _not_ the radeon driver that's
the problem.
Of course, the Debian bug might be a totally different problem, but I
doubt it.
