Seems that the problem was in the hardware. Reconnecting the monitor decreased
the blinking somewhat and now it disappeared completely with no obvious reason.
Please close the bug.

Today, after two days without problems, my X server crashed at startup
(before the gdm login appeared, with black screen and only the mouse
pointer on it).
