This doesn't seem to be related to the video driver after all. I just
reproduced the problem with a Radeon card. This time it happened while
switching mouse and keyboard away without changing the monitor status.

Ok with recent kernel (3.7) they are an improvement. It go to console and
print gpu lockup.
