Asus has published a BIOS update for this motherboard (version 0709,
dated April 2010) that finally fixed this issue for me. I'd say the bug
can be closed.

Sadly, the updated ASUS bios does not fix this issue.

Due to what appears to be a code generation issue, libttf2
1.4pre.20011029-1 and XFree86 4.2 segfault on Alpha when attempting to
render some TrueType fonts.
I have not fully traced this code gen error to the source that triggers it
in libttf2, but it appears to be similar to the one in gtk+
.
