Actually it turns out to be a totem bug.
When I play a video on that second session - it screws up the video
(makes it dark). If I use vlc it doesn't occur.

Actually the bug only applies to existing windows. for new ones it
doesn't (it is fine).

You can sort of work around this by binding the number pad to the
arrow key behaviour via the gnome gui(keyboard preferences) . I
haven't tested but you may also be able to set the arrow keys manually
(to work).

This bug affects me after upgrading from lenny to squeeze.
