The (release critical) bugs above have been tagged pending for over a
month, so by the new definition the tag appears to not apply to the above
bugs.

Bug#202323: new versions of xterm are available

The latest xterm version in Debian is 4.2.0(165). But there are new
versions on http://invisible-island.net/xterm/ with bug fixes (at
least one that was fixed more than one year ago, in the 2002-03-25
version, and that is still there in the Debian version).

Debian's xterm package is drawn from the corresponding XFree86 release.

This may change in the future.

xterm #177 is already included with the 4.3.0 debs; though it may be completely
split out later, as Branden hinted out. Chris Lee (another KDE hacker) and
possibly myself (time constraints make my involvement very iffy), are working to
make the XFree86 build system a little more modular in general.

If you are experiencing a problem, the first thing to check is the Debian X
FAQ. This FAQ is available on the World Wide Web:

  http://people.debian.org/~branden/xsf/FAQ

The FAQ is also available on any Debian system that has the

You can use the command dpkg --status xfree86-common at a shell prompt to
determine whether you have the xfree86-common package installed (this

If xfree86-common is installed, you can view the Debian X FAQ in a variety of

If the FAQ does not satisfactorily answer your question, the primary Debian

If you have already tried that mailing list, and/or your machine does *NOT*

using the search interface; in many cases, your problem has been
experienced before by other people, and a solution, workaround, or

If the search engine turns up nothing, you should know whether or not
you're subscribed to a mailing list before sending a message to it. If you

should ask them to do so. (Advanced mail users should set a

It looks pretty good, except for the fact that it's written in
post-processed format. I also feel that the licensing statement is too
vague; it's probably better to put the manpage under an explicit MIT/X
Consortium-style license.

However, I can't fault the technical content, so with a little massage
from a nitpicky person like me, it should be good for an upstream patch.

Thanks a lot. If you don't mind me performing that massage I'll see
what I can do.

Please do write manpages for the other two tools if you're so inclined.

I don't recall that we did, but...

1) Do you have an AltGr key? Does it work?

2) If so, please replace your /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/gb with the attached
file and let me know if that works.

3) According to the 4.2.1 gb symbols file, you get a numbersign keysym
by pressing the key that is located where the backslash key is on a
U.S. keyboard (it's not an ISO-standardized key location, apparently,
so XFree86 just calls it BKSL.). Again according to the file,
this key should also be engraved with a tilde, so SHIFT-# should get
   you ~. Is this correct?

I haven't sorted my pictures from DebCamp/DebConf yet, so I don't know
if I took a picture of a UK keyboard yet.

Symbol __divsi3 from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libbitmap.a is unresolved!

The XFree86 4.2.1 X server's loadable module support in combination
with GCC 3.3 on the IA-64 doesn't work.

You'll need to use the unofficial 4.3.0 packages (see the URL in my
.sig) or the xserver-xfree86-dbg package.

One can't figure out how to avoid having to type ones username and
password each time I power-up my PC. It must not be documented or possible?

As far as I know, this feature is not implemented in xdm. You may want
to try other display managers.

The bug described in http://www.securityfocusonline.com/bid/7002 exists in
sid's (presumable sarge, but not woody) xfree libs.

 ie:
   XLOCALEDIR=`perl -e 'printf x x 8000'` xclock
yields segv. Not a huge impact, but needs to be fixed nonetheless.

* As I understand it, this is not a security problem because no
privilege escalation is possible due to this buffer oveflow. Xlib
ignores the XLOCALEDIR environment variable entirely when running X
clients with elevated privileges. Therefore, I am removing the
security tag and downgrading the severity of this bug.

* This is an upstream flaw, hence the upstream tag.

* This causes SEGVs on i386 and SIGILLs on PowerPC. For my packages, I
regard crashes of this nature as being of important severity, hence
  the new setting.

* I have backported the upstream fix for this problem, and it will
appear in the next release, 4.2.1-10, hence the pending tag. The
fix was committed in revisions 312--313 of the XSF Subversion
  repository.

* (for the curious) I am investigating whether the forthcoming
4.3.0-0pre1v1 release to experimental will be affected by this bug.
If so, I will patch it there as well.

* Eduard Bloch [Sat, Jul 19 2003, 09:23:23PM]:

I tried to setup the DPI resolution of my display properly. But somehow,
the Xserver does not use the values of DisplaySize setting. They are
apparently parsed since the Xserver breaks on wrong (non-integer)
 parameters. However, xdpyinfo also shows

 screen #0:
   dimensions:1024x768 pixels (260x195 millimeters)
   resolution:100x100 dots per inch

Somebody has just reminded me about xserverc, and there was in fact
-dpi 100 option which caused the trouble. After removing it, it works
fine:

screen #0:
  dimensions:1024x768 pixels (292x217 millimeters)
  resolution:89x90 dots per inch

Maybe you add a hint about this to the DisplaySize description in
XF86Config(5x)?

MfG,
Eduard.

Not sure which of the many X packages is responsible for this... or
 perhaps even locales...

I have the following line in my xmodmap:
keycode 61 = minus underscore endash hyphen

Unfortunately, the letter produced is then U00AD, that is the Latin-1
Soft Hyphen, instead of U2010, the Unicode Hyphen. The keysym name
suggests otherwise, and there is no way I can see to get a hyphen.

As far as I know, XFree86 doesn't yet support Unicode keysyms.

This could be different in XFree86 4.3.0, but I haven't looked closely
at the issue yet.

not seem to work with my ASUS GeForce FX 5600 card.)

Other applications, like emacs, Aterm and Eterm display the 'k'
  just fine.

I use version 1.0-4349 of the nvidia driver.

If you need more information, please contact me.

This bug report seems bizarre in the extreme to me.

Can you use xwd to get an X Window Dump of an affected xterm, then
convert the .xwd to a PNG file and place it on the web somwhere?

Once you have done that, please mail this bug with the URL.

If you do not provide more information soon, I will have to close this
bug.

thanks

As I mention in the first part of the forwarded e-mail, I'm doubtful
whether I've a bug but my efforts and asking debian users for help has
not got me any farther so maybe it's bug? Advice suggestions
 welcome.

It looks probable to me that you're using a newer version of the Intel
video chipset than is supported by the version of XFree86 in Debian
woody.

Can you mail this bug ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) the output of:

/sbin/lspci

please?

 24622 root 20 -10 326M 24M 10392 R 99.2 2.4 38:22 XFree86

Please read the Debian X FAQ.

/usr/share/doc/xfree86-common/FAQ.gz

--

*) Why does the X server take up so much memory?

(Especially heard from KDE users with large monitors, many workspaces, and a
different picture in the root window of each workspace.)

Answer courtesy of Mark Vojkovich of the XFree86 Project, Inc.:

The X Window System is a client-server window system. The memory for pixmap
data resides on the server side instead of the client side. If you have 8
1600x1200 32bpp root window images that's 61 Megabytes. It resides in the
server instead of the client, unless they are shared memory pixmaps, in
which case it will be counted on both the server and client side.

Obviously this data has to be stored someplace. It's not like it can just
disappear when you're not using it. If they were stored on the client side
instead, people would be complaining about KDE memory usage.

Additionally, Sean McGlynn of the KDE Project offered assistance:

Please direct such users over to KDE's mailing lists -
http://www.kde.org/mailinglists.html - and we can try and
  investigate/resolve their issues fully.

David B. Harris of Debian also has these remarks:

Something worth noting is also the concept of leaking. This will be a term
familiar to some and unknown to others. Basically, as processes run they
may dynamically allocate memory for some purpose or other. If they allocate
some memory, but never *de-allocate* it, even after they're done using it,
then over time the memory used by that process will increase.

Since hardware/video drivers in XFree86 are responsible for some of this
allocation and de-allocation, a badly-written driver can increase the memory
used by the XFree86 process. The closed-source nVidia drivers are
particularily bad for this; I've seen XFree86 memory usage triple during a
  week-long session.

Keep in mind that this isn't the end of the world. Unless it's an extremely
badly-written driver, memory allocated by the driver which doesn't get
de-allocated (but stops being actively used) will be swapped out. So the
amount of physical RAM the XFree86 process will use won't increase much (if
at all) due to these drivers.

And finally, these remarks from Mike A. Harris of Red Hat Software:

I'd like to add to that another frequently reported problem of XFree86
consuming a lot of memory. Many people report X uses 64Mb+ of memory and
can't see any reason why it should. They blame X for being bloated, etc.

Digging into it more however, 99 times out of 100, they are using the output
of top or procps or similar utility do show how much memory XFree86 is
consuming. Unfortunately, the memory reported as used in top/ps output is
interpreted solely as being system RAM and/or swap, and that is very
misleading as it is not true.

The memory shown by top, which users are misled into believing is memory used
up by X, is an amalgamation of the video card's own memory, and memory mapped
I/O regions, as well as the actual memory used by the X server, pixmaps, and
  various other things.

It is not at all uncommon for a modern 64Mb video card, to have X's memory
usage appear to be 100Mb or more, when in reality, 64Mb of that is video RAM,
  and 16-32Mb possibly mmapped registers.

Most developers such as ourselves are aware of this, however most end-users
  are not.

On Linux a user can view the memory map breakdown by logging in as root and
  looking at the file:

  cat /proc/$(pidof X)/maps

That gives a fairly detailed breakdown of the memory map of the X server
process, and what actual amount of memory is being used, etc.

The exact meaning of the contents of the proc maps file is left as an
exercise for the curious reader. ;o) Reading the kernel sources which
implement it is about the best manual I know of.

The hang is probably a bug, but your use of top to diagnose the problem does
not elucidate the situation, for the reasons explained above.

It appears to be a debhelper bug but we haven't tracked down the cause
yet. Joey, I'll toss you some verbose output next time I try to build
the trunk.

Bug#201737: No # on UK Powerbook keyboard

2003-07-24 Thread Branden Robinson

The British variant of the Macintosh keyboard layout on my Powerbook has
one fairly annoying problem: the keyboard has no # on it. The way Apple
solves this is to make meta-3 generate #.

(I'm at debcamp if you want to examine this directly.)

One can't figure out how to avoid having to type ones username and
password each time I power-up my PC. It must not be documented or possible?

As far as I know, this feature is not implemented in xdm. You may want
to try other display managers.

The bug described in http://www.securityfocusonline.com/bid/7002 exists in
sid's (presumable sarge, but not woody) xfree libs.

 ie:
   XLOCALEDIR=`perl -e 'printf x x 8000'` xclock
yields segv.

* Eduard Bloch [Sat, Jul 19 2003, 09:23:23PM]:

I tried to setup the DPI resolution of my display properly. But somehow,
the Xserver does not use the values of DisplaySize setting. They are
apparently parsed since the Xserver breaks on wrong (non-integer)
 parameters. However, xdpyinfo also shows

 screen #0:
   dimensions:1024x768 pixels (260x195 millimeters)
   resolution:100x100 dots per inch

Somebody has just reminded me about xserverc, and there was in fact
-dpi 100 option which caused the trouble. After removing it, it works
fine:

screen #0:
  dimensions:1024x768 pixels (292x217 millimeters)
  resolution:89x90 dots per inch

Maybe you add a hint about this to the DisplaySize description in
XF86Config(5x)?

MfG,
Eduard.

Not sure which of the many X packages is responsible for this... or

No, we didn't unfortunately.

 1) Do you have an AltGr key? Does it work?

No, so obviously not.

No.

 I haven't sorted my pictures from DebCamp/DebConf yet, so I don't know
if I took a picture of a UK keyboard yet.

The UK Powerbook keyboard is a bit different to a standard UK keyboard
(although perhaps not a UK Apple keyboard).

I also ought to note that there's a dead key on the keyboard - between
the left shift and Z is a key engraved ` with ~ above it which does
nothing. At the top left below ESC and next to 1 is a key with a +-
sign as the shifted character and a ยง as the unshifted one (kind of a S
with an o through it if it doesn't come through OK).

All the other keys on the keyboard function as expected.

Please read the Debian X FAQ.

--

The hang is probably a bug, but your use of top to diagnose the problem does
not elucidate the situation, for the reasons explained above.
