RE: [Declude.JunkMail] OT: Is IMail Server Upgrade Worth It? 6.06 - 8.01
We've just upgraded from Imail 6.06 to 8.05 (but now 8.1 is out). I really wanted to upgrade because there are a number of issues with v6 (and I believe pre 7) that I didn't think were good at all. Small % of miss deliveries, trying to send mail to domain A records instead of MX, display bug with W2K SP4, the fact that icons in web messaging didn't always load. So we upgraded. Unfortunately I seem to have a problem with the retry timer. It's set to try sending mail every 30 minutes, with 96 attemps - this works out at 48 hours. However Imail seems to try sending more than once a minute meaning that 48 hours drops to just over 2! Waiting for a reply from Imail support but not hopfully, havn't found them very helpful in the past - hopefully they'll surprise me this time. We are considering upgrading to the newest version of IMail and I was interested in knowing whether the users of this list think the upgrade is worth the price tag? Does anyone know if there's any reduced upgrade pricing? Are the features in the latest versions of IMail of any benefit? One of the main reasons we are even considering not upgrading is because IMail Server 6.06 has been so stable for us. We literally have not had a problem with it, ever. We currently have about 200 domains hosted on the server and I don't know if I want to deal with the fallout and learning curve in getting the customers accustomed to the new way of doing things, if any, either. I'd be interested in your feedback. Hi Scott, I'm running 1.78i28. PREWHITELIST is only entered once in the global.cfg, so no overriding. To use the debug mode, you can change the LOGLEVEL LOW line in \IMail\Declude\global.cfg to LOGLEVEL DEBUG. Then, send an E-mail through that should be pre-whitelisted, and then you can switch back to LOGLEVEL LOW (the debug mode adds huge amounts of information to the log file). You can then send me the \IMail\spool\dec.log file (as an attachment off-list, NOT sent from web messaging), and I can take a look at it to see what is happening. -Scott --- Declude JunkMail: The advanced anti-spam solution for IMail mailservers since 2000. [Declude.JunkMail] per user settings question
We have JM Pro, and have a few per-user settings. Now we have a client with a nobody alias setup to catch all emails that aren't specifically addressed to one of their mailboxes. They want custom JM settings for this nobody alias. Can we just setup a nobody.jumkmail file like we would for any regular account? I guess this really breaks down to two questions: do the per-user settings apply to aliases? And do they apply to the nobody account? If we can't do a per-user setting for a nobody alias, then what's the best way to achieve the customer's goal? Not in the least. They are also going to allow searching of all the E-mail ever sent and received using their technology as well. The only concern that seemed to be mentioned was how to migrate to a pay-for service, though they are supporting their venture with ads. No doubt this will get added to spamdomains on my box, and hopefully they have controls in place to prevent exploitation of actual accounts. Matt Kevin wrote: Anyone think this is a hoax? Re: [Declude.JunkMail] per user settings question
Hmmm..., that doesn't quite do what they want. They have an mailbox julie, and nobody is an alias that resolves to julie. They want different JM settings for mail specifically addressed to julie versus mail addressed to no legitimate mailbox (which would get handled through the nobody alias). For example, if stephanie used to work for the company but has been gone for two years (and her mailbox closed for two years), they want different settings for stephanie than for julie. I suppose I could suggest that we create a true mailbox called nowhere, make nobody an alias for it, create per-user JM settings for the nowhere mailbox, and then have the nowhere mailbox forward all mail to julie. Will that work? Would the mail get processed by JM twice? Once on its way to nowhere and once on its way to julie? Thanks, Ben - Original Message - From: R. As much as I believe FoxFriends morning show tells no lies .. I'd rather verify it with a reputable source: - Google does in fact own Gmail.com - It sits on the Google network - gmail.google.com == gmail.com - and www.Gmail.com says 1000 MB.
That is exactly what I would recommend. Will that work? Would the mail get processed by JM twice? Once on its way to nowhere and once on its way to julie? It should work fine. If you're using IMail v8.1, you'll probably be stuck having the mail scanned twice, though. -Scott --- Declude JunkMail: The advanced anti-spam solution for IMail mailservers since 2000. Re: [Declude.JunkMail] per user settings question
Thanks, Scott. Actually, we're back at IMail 7.15. I have yet to see any real benefit in the 8.x series. Ben - Original Message - From: R. RE: [Declude.JunkMail] Error #183
Scott, I'd some checking and the error should have been occurring all the time, but for whatever reason it was not. The problem was with the external plus test. I was opening up the envelope header (the Q file) and extracting the sender and all recipients. Apparently this was the problem. I modified the test to open up the temp file and now everything works. Thanks for your help! David From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] on behalf of R. Scott Perry Sent: Wed 3/31/2004 4:36 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [Declude.JunkMail] Error #183 What I would recommend in this case is searching the IMail SMTP log file for references to the spool file name, minus the first character and extension. So with this line: 03/30/2004 22:04:49 Q435810aa00d01c07 WARNING: Could not unlock Z:\IMail\spool\_435810aa00d01c07.~MD due to error #183. you would search the IMail SMTP log file for 435810aa00d01c07. If you find that two incoming E-mails both use the same spool file name, it's an IMail bug causing the problem. -Scott At 05:30 PM 3/31/2004, Kornitz, David wrote: Below is a log for a single email, the last line indicates that ther was an error # 183. How often is this happening (just this once, occasionally, or for all E-mails)? the problem occurs in groups or batches Did it just start happening? Over the past month or so. If so, are you aware of any changes made recently? Updates are being made to External Plus Test What version of IMail are you running? 7.15 HF3 What version of Declude are you running (you can type \IMail\Declude -diag from a command prompt to find out)? Declude 1.78 (C) Copyright 2000-2004 Computerized Horizons. Diagnostics ON (Declude v1.78). The Error #183 means that the file already exists, which means that when Declude JunkMail went to unlock the file (renaming it from _*.~MD to Q*.SMD), there was already a Q*.SMD file there). Most likely, this is a bug in IMail causing a duplicate file to be used. This would happen occasionally on IMail v7.04 and earlier, but I haven't seen it happen since (and I know you're on a version after 7.04, from the length of the spool file names). -Scott --- Declude JunkMail: The advanced anti-spam solution for IMail mailservers since 2000. [Declude.JunkMail] Combine BASE64 and REVDNS?
Hi, I've been seeing a lot of spam the last couple of days that fails both the REVDNS and BASE64 tests and nothing else. I hold on 10, and based on a year of experience with balancing the usual factors of false positives versus catches, I have each of these tests scoring a 4. Needless to say, this particular spam is getting through with a score of 8. I know I can increase each test by a point and take care of it, and I have done that as a temporary measure, but I am concerned that my false positive rate will climb as a result. Is there a way to AND these tests or to post-process with a filters file that would detect the phrase X-Spam-Tests-Failed: BASE64, REVDNS in the headers and add some weight? -Dave Doherty Skywaves, Inc. --- [This E-mail was scanned for viruses by Declude Virus (http://www.declude.com)] --- This E-mail came from the Declude.JunkMail mailing list. Re: [Declude.JunkMail] Combine BASE64 and REVDNS?
Dave, There's a kludge that can be done for this that I call a combo filter. If you are using 1.78+ and the Pro version, you can code up a filter that adds extra points when both tests are failed. For an example of how this works, see the following archive post: http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg16551.html Or take a look at the ZOMBIE filter in the beta filters section of my site: http://www.mailpure.com/software/decludefilters/beta/ For this type of spam, it's likely that much of it comes from China, and I have a filter called BADCOUNTRYNOREVDNS that can be used to add points to this stuff in the same beta filter directory. Note that I also share the interest in logical operators, but I do recognize that this is a fairly large change and if it comes, I don't expect to see it soon.
