Not that I can think of, the real advantage is it shuts off all internal
validations, AVG which has already stopped, SNF and CT which will stop anytime
soon.

So, OTHER than Sniffer, any OTHER advantages of using the HOSTS trick vs.
the Bypass key?

If internal SNF is still ON then it can conflict with external Message Sniffer
by grabbing the port which SNF uses. By using our fix will ensure internal SNF
is turned OFF. If using the bypass key has everything OFF then that is fine too.

So - is there any advantage of using the hosts file trick (to invalidate the

Does one enable more functions that the other?

Subject: [Declude.JunkMail] why have spam scores jumped?

(I sent this message on Friday but it never showed up, so I thought I’d try
again.)

Hi,

I don't know if anyone is still here but I'd like some insights into some
strange anti-spam behavior.

We have latest SmarterMail and Declude, as well as Sniffer. Over the last few
days I noticed a significant drop in email messages. Upon further
investigation, I found that messages were being givn much higher spam scores
than in the past, with the result that they get classified as spam or just
outright deleted. Checking the headers, however, I don't see why the scores
are coming in so high. Below are a few examples. Does anyone see why the spam
scores come out so high?

Thanks,

Ben

I am starting to have some serious performance issues since I upgraded to SM
8.2. Although I can not be for sure that is it due to the upgrade as usage has
also increased with added clients and the start of school. The big issue is
that the web interface becomes unresponsive for up to about 5 minutes. The
machine has 2 Gig of RAM, and a swap file of 5.5 Gig. In Windows task manager
I see my peak memory usage is now 10 gig.

Right now I am not sure if the performance issues are being caused by RAM, too
much traffic, Smartermail, or Declude.

RE: [Declude.JunkMail] white list or positive weight for a specific To address?

2011-06-18 Thread Randy A
Yes but if I remember correctly there is a limit on the number of whitelist
entries you can have in the cfg file (200 I think – please correct me if I am
wrong) so depending on the number of domains you are hosting email for, this
could fill up at some point. We use the whitelist technique for our company
needs, and the text file format for customer needs so everything is in one
location for easier management.

Subject: [Declude.JunkMail] weird processing of lists

Hi,

I've run into a small problem between Declude and lists. I have a domain
with a list on it such as listn...@domain.com. You have to be on the
posters' list to send messages to that list. One of the posters sends
messages to the list and is authorized for the list, but gets this error
message: Invalid final delivery userid: listname-spam...@domain.com.
SpamLow is the folder into which messages are normally dropped when their
score is between 5 and 10.

It appears that Declude is assigning this message a score between 5 and 10
and then trying to put the message into the SpamLow folder for this user.
Except that it's not a user, it's a list.

So why does this happen and how do I handle it?

Thanks,

Ben

P.S. We've been using Declude JM/AV with Imail for a long time. The current
versions are Imail 2006.23 and Declude 1.63.

Re: [Declude.JunkMail] DNS lookup fail, yet e-mail passes spam tests

2009-02-03 Thread Randy Armbrecht
MX records are for incoming mail servers - not outgoing mail servers. If an
organization uses a different server for outbound other than the same server(s)
used for inbound mail, then that outbound server will not have an MX record.

It should by all correct practices have an A record and a PTR record for that
server in their DNS.

Sorry but I am not sure what you mean by outbound in the sample below. I
also do not know what specific test should be triggered other than something
should be.

Here I have mail coming in from a domain. DNS lookup on their MX record
fails. Is that not a big flag that this is likely Spam?

Maybe I am misunderstanding something here. In the sample below we got mail
from an orderlinenews address and the MX record does not exist

Actually, it doesn't send just to the mail server. But I'm guessing that
would be the best thing to do.

I can easily get a REVDNS through my ISP. However, I'm not sure what I
would get it as. Obviously my mail server was easy (mail.domain.com).
However, with a web server that hosts many sites, do I have to have a
REVDNS

for each domain name?

While any server doing direct delivery to remote MXs must have a PTR, I
got
the impression that Todd's box sends to the Declude box only, making the

[Declude.JunkMail] Any Known issues Inv-URIBL today?

We're seeing a backup today on mulitple occasions now in the Declude Proc

We're still running an older version of Inv-URIBL (1.1x I believe)

version 1.x is very old (several years). We are now on version 3.1.1.

Check the DNS server InvURIBL is using to see if it is responding in a timely

Re: [Declude.JunkMail] Any Known issues Inv-URIBL today?

2008-02-06 Thread Randy Armbrecht
Currently we have our inv-URIBL config set to only scan if a message is
still below a certain weight when it reaches INV.

I'll go thru thru config again just to see if there's anything I may have
missed in that last time.

In addition to what Pete suggests with Weightgate (which I also use on
some servers with older hardware). You will want to set inside your
invuribl.exe.config file values for max and min skipweights to skip any
unnecessary processing of messages.

Hi Randy;

We have seen that often, in fact what we do is swap that test in on

I'm curious - (I don't use this but many of my customers do)

Is it possible to run Inv-URIBL only on messages that have not yet
reached a hold (or other appropriate) weight?

Perhaps using weightgate?

If SNF is running ahead of it then would that have the effect of only
running inv-URIBL on messages that have not already been tagged as spam
by SNF?

What are the limits of conditional test triggers in the Declude
environment (aside from AVAFTERJM)?

I just started receiving something new that so far is being caught as spam.
They are messages with no subject, no body, but have a file attachment that
is Content-Type: audio/mpeg. So far I've seen it as

elvis.mp3
beatles.mp3
hurricanechris.mp3

I sent it through VirusTotal but didn't get any hits.

Anyone else seen this or heard what it is?

Thanks,

Gary

We have experienced the same issue - as of 1.30pm friday our declude
just stopped working; all attempts to restart it are not working -
we've rebooted, re-installed, etc.

We did just renew our SA with declude at 12.30pm yesterday; I'm
wondering if that has anything to do with it.

2007-08-29 Thread Randy Armbrecht
I'm interested in finding this out too - we had a few legit emails get caught
the last 2 days primarily due to the SPAMDOMAINS test coming from a

Does anyone have an updated listed for SPAMDOMAINS test for the AT T

I know there is .att. and bellsouth.com and sbc.com but what else is there
that could originate from an att.com REVDNS?

David,

I normally do not put in my 2 cents worth to general discussions, but would
like to this time just to help clarify the intent, as I see it, of the original
request. Although I am a pretty avid (sp?) user of the forums/groups, I cannot
imagine EVERYONE that is on the email distribition list is a frequent visitor
to such. Those that are not will not learn of the mistakenly left out DLL file
unless another email blast goes out.

Hi David,

Thank you for addressing the AVG problem as quickly as you did.

I also think Declude is doing a good stuff on the Virus and Spam lists and I
have no problem how yesterday's communication was handled on the virus list.

However, I thought I had received a direct HTML formatted customer notice,
with logos as such (not just via the regular virus list) urging the install
of the new version (but I no longer have those emails). So I had understood
Dave that he was expecting the warning - bad install email to be sent
through that same distribution.

I only hope that I don't remember wrong and wasn't looking at some older
notice.

Best Regards,
Andy

Andy and Dave,

I had posted to the virus list as a courtesy giving everyone on the virus
list the heads up before actually notifying all our customers. And yes I did
post to the virus list again once John had identified the issue and it was
corrected immediately, this all happened within a 25 minute time frame, I
think it is unfortunate that perhaps you downloaded the Imail version during
that window, and were upgrading from a version prior to the last release
4.3.40, that being said I do understand that it was annoying :) and I
sincerely apologize for the inconvience.

John,

I think the point Dave is making is:

They did notify all clients individually about the availability of the new
version, urging them to act immediately!

However, when they managed to release an incomplete install, they did NOT
send out a second notice to that exact same group to warn those who were
trusting enough to follow their initial urging to upgrade that they better
download a second time.

In fact, if their customer portal has a last login field in their
database, then they could have identified anyone who had accessed their
customer portal that day and even restricted the follow-up warning to that
group.

I feel Dave's pain: I was lucky that I didn't have time earlier. Otherwise I
could have been in the same boat. And by the time the installation failed -
and NO mail was being delivered anymore, with customers up in arms about it
- my last concern would have been catching up on the chatter on mailing
lists.

Best Regards,

Andy

The upgrade that came out today, 4.3.46, was specifically and pointedly only
to correct a problem with the built-in AVG scanner that was created by a
change AVG recently made.

I did so, and the upgrade went fine this time.

So why did they restrict the distibution of the mod notice to the AV list
when they sent individual emails to notify of the initial upgrade?

This is more than annoying...

[Declude.JunkMail] Recurring Quemgr Issues again

2006-01-29 Thread randy armbrecht
OK - I'm officially fed up and looking to move to a different platform. I finally thought I had this licked, but it is rearing up again. Our Queuemgr just up'd and stpped again today; still haven't gotten it back up. We were on IMail 8.15hf2; dual Xeon 2GB Ram, Win2000, declude 3.x (latest) JMPro, Virus std and HJ, F-ProtThe issue IS NOT- mail gets processed by Declude fine; it's not being processed by Imail Queuemgr when pla ced back in the spool folder*I have stopped / restarted all services; no good*Istopped services, renamed the spool file so I could start from scratch, restarted all and it is hit or miss.*dns IS NOT the problem - dns runs on the server direct; I have concluded from nslookup that DNS is woking fine. I have even tried to switch DNS to a new server; same thing.I took the opportunity to upgrade to 8.22 while I am down, thinking this would help. Nope. It's a d%$ good thing I have a SmarterMail server running for a few test domains so I can still communicate with the group for assistance. The only reason I haven;t switched to SM yet (latest v2) is because as far as I know, SM declude still do not support AMTP Auth whitelist.Anyone have any suggestions?Randy ArmbrechtGlobal Web Solutions, Inc.804-382-5300 option 1

[Declude.JunkMail] recurrance of delayed message processing

2005-12-27 Thread randy armbrecht
I am on hold with IPSwitch checking on this issue again - (IMail 8.15hf2, declude 3.x latest) - it started about 12.30pm; email comes into the server, handled by Declude, processed back in Spool, but is not delivered past this pointDNS checks out OK; even tried switching DNS servers and stop/starting all IMail services and the Declide proc service.Declude logs show normal processing activity; IMail logs simply show message coming in and that's it. nothing unuasul in logs at all...(I replied back to a post this morning using my regular list address, but since the server that handles that address is not working, I am sending this out via our gateway server...we had this happen on Xmas eve night as well)Randy Armbrecht
