RE: [Declude.JunkMail] Imail vs. Smartermail

2010-09-13 Thread Robert Shubert
When I made the switch over to SM I had several accounts with abc-xyz@ that
didn't work. We solved the problem by creating a aliases named abc-xyz@ that
mapped to abc+...@. I understand that you have many of these type accounts
to handle, but it could be done with a large alias file (that you should be
able to create automatically with a script).

Subject: [Declude.JunkMail] Imail vs. Smartermail

Hi All -

We're currently using Imail v2006. We had no need to upgrade and the iMail
versions until this year didn't support some features we needed (primariy
DomainKey / DKIM signing of outbound mail. ) We'd considered moving to
Smartermail, but it didn't (and doesn't) support a feature we needed
(blah-x...@igive.com) formatting of incoming mail. Smartermail does
(blah+x...@igive.com) and we'd have to get 250,000 folks to change the
e-mail address we assigned them.

Pricing between the two for our needs is almost the same (Smartermail would
be slightly cheaper in the long run).

I know that people left iMail in droves over the past several years. Any
current info on Ipswitch that should make me go through the pain of a switch
to Smartermail?

Thanks ahead of time.

Rob

RE: [Declude.JunkMail] SmarterMail Experiences

2007-01-30 Thread Robert Shubert
I’m running a server on the side of ~175 domains and 1000+ users. Spanning
from domains with nothing but aliases to aol.com to 400 webmail users
looking for outlook-like collaborative features. I started migration from
Imail 8.22 + declude to SM 4.0 a week ago (and will finish this coming
weekend). I’m migrating in batches every other night and support calls the
day after are approximately 10% of the customers moved. At least ½ of them
are due to something dumb. Unfortunately the list of differences between the
two software packages (and things that SM doesn’t do) does get a little long
if you get picky. (eg. Imail can take #$%: in place of @, whereas SM can
only take %/). But I really want to emphasize that in the areas where SM
does shine (eg. resource usage, admin reports, web interface, support,
bang-for-buck) it really shines brightly. I am hopeful that the limitations
of SM4 will quickly disappear over the next few months. Keep in mind that if
you need to serve a lot of Mac webmail users or require SSL support on your
protocols, you might want to wait it out some, those areas are the biggest
faults at the moment.

Best,

Robert

I too have a serious issue with Declude
remaining stable on my system. Ive tried each of the 2.0.6.x betas as
they came out, but the problem hasnt gone away. I did have the mentioned
SMTPd memory/crash issue when I originally went to 8.2, but with HF2 installed,
that as gone away. My server runs an average of 70 mail/min with a peak of
about 200.

My question is: what version of declude
should I rollback to? Ill gladly give up features as long as I have the
stability, when declude crashes (and puts up a dialog, which I have to clear)
no mail is delivered.

Also I hope the issue of orphaned emails is being addressed
with Declude and SM.

This is a real pain, we had to go to back to Declude
2.0.5.76 because 2.0.6 release would break up the hdr and eml files (so you
would get orphaned hdr in the /proc and .eml in the spool). 2.0.5.76 doesnt
check for emails forgotten by declude so we check the /proc directory with a
script. Obviosuly this is not the best way to run a mail server.

I believe we worked with Ralph on this issue for several
months, but no solution yet.

Title: Message

Exactly what I had to do. I was skipping for 2 hours on failure, caching dns info, and doing
20 retries on 30 min intervals. Hotmail wasnt getting anything from me.
I switched back to letting my DNS server do the work (never really saw any benefit
anyway), turned off the skip on failure feature (also didnt make much of
a difference except to make my log files a little bigger) and increased my
retry to 24 times at one hour intervals. That immediately fixed the
problem.

I actually think things are running a
little better this way, likely because the extra effort the server does with
dns is offset by my longer retry interval. And I give mail a bigger chance to
get delivered to a problematic (or recently changed) mail server.

I also turned off
Failed Domain Skipping for the same reasons, but I don't believe
that I had any issues besides temporary delays causing confusion when helping
clients get their servers back online after failures. I figure that with
all the processing power that goes into spam and virus blocking, caching and
failed domain skipping aren't but 0.1% of the utilization and it's likely safer
to turn them off. Who knows.

I turned off IMail's
internal DNS caching in order to avoid situations like this. I don't host
that many local accounts, but I haven't seen any build-ups in my spool either
time that Hotmail has had issues. My thought is that maybe you cached
records in IMail that corespond to the servers that aren't functioning
properly? This is one of the reasons why I turned this off at least.

The ALERT action should work as-is (although now that you mention it, it

probably should be changed like the BOUNCE action).

The BOUNCE action was renamed (see http://www.declude.com/relnotes.htm
for
the new name), because it was being misused too often, and causing our
customers to appear as spammers. If you wish to continue using it, you
should read the information on it in the manual first. It is rarely
appropriate to use the BOUNCE action (although there are some cases
where
it may make sense).

RE: [Declude.JunkMail] Disable outgoing scanning

2004-03-22 Thread Robert Shubert
Sorry for asking for specifics, could you clarify the minimum versions
of both software products for this function to work.

Also, this command isn't in the manual, likely because it's still beta,
but considering I read it thoroughly before I emailed the list, you
might want to add a beta section to it.

One other note along these lines, I like to update my config files from
time to time, but new commands found only in newer versions of the
software often show up in them. Is there a chart of Declude version vs.
command? I don't update the version of Declude as often as the config
files, or as the case is at the moment, I need to get an agreement but
won't be able to afford it for a little while.

Thanks

[Declude.JunkMail] message-id header

2004-02-09 Thread Robert Shubert
I got this:

Code: 8000800e. The E-mail failed the BADHEADERS test.

This E-mail has a bogus Message-ID: header.

From the online tool (and that code). I was wondering what constitutes a
good Message-ID? Is there a site (RFC?) or other description of what
these things should look like?

Thanks,

Robert

[Declude.JunkMail] IPNOTINMX, NOLEGITCONTENT

2004-02-04 Thread Robert Shubert
I recently turned on the IPNOTINMX and NOLEGITCONTENT filters to see how
they work. They seem to do more harm than good, for instance I weight 10
SPAMCOP since that service works well for me, but these filters lowered
the weight so that spamcop (only) spams get through.

I do understand that they solve an issue of server generated emails, one
email that was getting marked as spam was a system report from a
firewalled server, IP 10.1.1.something. This email is now not spam, as
it shouldn't be, but I'm not sure about the tradeoff.

Are other people using these filters successfully? Is it better to keep
them with a low negative weight or disable them altogether and just rely
on positive tests?

Thanks for your input.

Robert

[Declude.JunkMail] imail calendar is spam?

2003-03-17 Thread Robert Shubert
I turned on the iMail Calendar for a client and they responded with an
odd problem. If someone uses the calendar to invite someone else, there
is evidently a javascript popup window that can come from the request
email. This javascript then allows the user to click to respond. It's
this response that Declude is catching as spam.

Emails sent normally from the users machine do not fail spam tests, only
when this javascript method is used.

The header reports the failure of c8200204, or no From address, and
therefore reports both SPAMHEADERS and BADHEADERS, which then hit my WEIGHT.

Anyway, looking the header I have here, there is a From: line. But
looking at the raw email on the server, the from line is this:

From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri Feb 28 10:21:17 2003

It seems the timestamp is appended to the From line for some reason.
This is probably being seen as a corruption in the header.

I'm emailing this to both declude and Imail hoping that the two parties
can work out a solution.

Thanks,

Robert Shubert

Re: [Declude.JunkMail] Whitelist Request

2002-09-17 Thread Robert Shubert

Rick,

I too am planning to advance Declude administration to my users via a
web application. Although I saw no reason why I couldn't programmaticaly
change the global.cfg and other files. Could I ask your reasoning?
Also, to what level of modification do you anticipate. The numerous
options that declude allows for will make 100% remote editing quite a
challange. Thanks for your input.

 Howdy Scott,
Was wondering if you would consider creating a separate whitelist file for
management purposes. Currently I have one customer with 4 Imail servers
peered as a single domain across the country (US :-) I maintain master black
lists and word filters on my workstation and use a batch file to FTP them to
each server. Also, we are developing some web based management tools for
Declude and would rather not have to programmaticly access the global.cfg
 file.

 Figured I would ask :-)

 Have a great day!
